At least five people are now confirmed dead from flooding in the Richmond area. The remains of Tropical Storm Gaston dumped more than a foot rain in some places. Governor Mark Warner declared a state of emergency last night, and late this morning, he said it is his hope and prayer that the hardest-hit section of Richmond will come back. About 20 blocks of downtown Richmond have been condemned due to damage from the water, which reached up to ten feet high. City officials say the dollar damage will easily be in the millions. Many of the roads were still closed this morning, making life difficult for commuters.

More than 83,000 people are still without power in Richmond and the surrounding region. Officials say electricity will be out for some areas for an extended period of time. Storm damage in the capitol region is also affecting some cellphone service in the Roanoke Valley. SunCom representatives tell us the storm has knocked out some of its celluar service to both the Richmond and Roanoke areas. SunCom officials say they hope to restore some of the lost service this afternoon or evening.

damn that sucks, are you around that way anywhere? this year has been quite active and a lot of them are doing so much damage it's terrible

Richmond's about 4 hours away from me.
But the funny thing is, we got very little rain here; it was on and off, but there were a couple heavy downpours... but none of them lasted more than a few minutes or so.
