I am warning ya. It's also a hefty download. But the drumming is pretty wild. Wild. Like HR Giger meets Varese meets ELP while hanging with Tony Williams. Wait, ELP and Giger did meet...well, it's like that. Aggressive fusion prog stuff.

From the Magma Live cd, Christian Vander on drums and compositional wierdness. There are parts of his music that are breathtakingly beautiful and parts that are almost what the Chruch Lady would call satanic. Very wierd. The language used in his music is one that he created himself to go along with the story of a race of aliens...research it if you're interested.

magma was for sure one of the most accomplished fusion band in the world.and they're french!!!

christian is most respected over here and as you mentionned,a very eclectic but yet talented composer.

his brother is also a very fine musician keyboardist in a more jazzy way.

Yeah, looking back on the 70's, here was a LOT of great music made then, just tons of it.

I wish I would have caught Magma at the NEAR Fest a while back, it would be interesting to see them live. And Vander has a cool looking setup with those gigantic chinas up behind him. Gotta give the guy some props for sticking to his guns, even if the music is crazy.

Yeah, he does sound a lot like Jeff Porcaro, I mean, he can kill shuffles.

I think his language is currently being used by Method Man. I could be mistaken, I'm not up on the rap scene.

What a band !!!

Christian Vander is not only a wonderful drummer, he is a true legend.
One the most innovatory musician that I have ever heard.

I saw Magma for one of their last gigs in the eighties in Paris and it is definetely an unique experience.

It would be unfair to forget the brilliant musicians who played with Magma such as Beno?t Widemann (keyboards), Didier Lockwood (violin), Jannick Top (bass), Bernard Paganotti (bass), Dominique Bertram (bass), Claude Engel (guitar) and a fantastic singer Klaus Blasquiz.

The sadest side of the story is that Mike Oldfield HAS STOLEN Vander's music.

They were rehearsing (1972) in the same studio and Vander played for him some songs from his forthcoming LP called "Mekan?k Destrukt?w Kommand?h".

Oldfield shamefully plagiarized it in his "Tubular Bells" (released .....in 1972).

Guys such Billy Cobham or Phil Collins were so impressed by Christian Vander that they offered him to make a career in the USA.
He always refused because he did not want to be the slave of any kind of "marketing compromissions".

Let me finish by telling you an anecdote about Vander : he worked a lot the single stroke (what we called in France "le fris?").

The speed of his single stroke was so amazing that he could hold a coin on the wall.
