D.U.I. (Drumming Under the Influence...)

So, any one ever play drunk or high? I have only played drunk a couple of times (I don't do drugs) and it is no fun. I know that a lot of top-40 "bar-band" drummers are victims of this, since drinks are free... any good (horror) stories?
When I did a gig in Whitehorse we did 2 jam-nights a week and I'd have all these drunk jokers come up and play my kit, it was terrible... I wanted to kill them. One guy put dents in all of my heads cause he played like such a baboon.

Anyone gonna be Steve Gadd for Halloween, do some rails and beat the crap out of their drums?

Maybe just one drink to loosen up a bit but never drunk. I'm sure it's different for everybody though.

Once I got fairly wasted at this open mic' thing and made an ass out of myself. The band actually stopped playing and just stared. ROCK ON!!!

I read an old interview with Gadd in Modern Drummer, or maybe it was Downbeat, where they asked what he liked to drink while he was playing!... Can't really see that question getting asked these days!

Yeah, open mic nights can be pretty sketchy.
The other thing is that drinking will dehydrate you (other than water!).

So, what did Gadd say about his fave drink? lol

Unfortunately, when your'e under the influence, you think your'e great, but your'e not.

And tearing down the gear after a gig whilst your'e stumbling about can't be much fun either.

I was in a top forty band and was about 17 yrs old. It was New Years eve and the whole place was packed. I took a break to let the former drummer play a few and I had a couple of drinks (and maybe something else?) and I came back to the bandstand and had to play and was like frozen. I couldn't keep up ! The tempo was all over the place and the band looked around at me pumping their guitars to bring the tempo up. My head was spinning and everything was in slow motion.

That was the last time i really indulged on a gig.

I felt like crap for days after that. I sure wasn't cut out to be a rock star : )


That was during the early 80's when the generation ahead of me were party animals. I didn't want any part of it after that.

Generally i never drink on the gig. [But, Ah, my younger, stoopiter daze...]

Half-to-1 normal-sized drink 1/2 hr b4 the gig wont hurt to loosen up [unless there's definite alcoholism involved!], but generally, one shouldnt really need it to loosen up, if you know what i mean.

And again on break between the 2nd & 3rd, or 3rd & 4th set, or at night's end.

But generally, no excessive drinking on the gig [or off!] [I, by no means, am a 'goody 2 shoes,' as i've def had my 'day.']

A couple-to-few drinks //[w moderation & discretion]// never hurt anyone //over the course of an evening// [except an alcoholic]...

I had much the same thing happen to me, and made a total ass out of myself at a jam night. The band played the same song week in, week out (Mustang Sally or something like that...) and I was so sick of always being lumbered with that crap when it was my time to play...

Well, I did a big ending-fill to finish the song, after the first verse, and got some funny looks. I then got up and told them what I thought about having toplay the same song week after week... Needless to say, I was told all this the next day after the fact...

Haven't even touched a drink since, except for Birthdays/New Years etc...
