Noticed reading on one of these topics about a pin registered super 8 camera. Which make and model is that?
It's not a major brand.
These were made one at a time back in the late 70's and early 80's. About 110 cameras were made in total.
I have two. Still in the testing stages however.
A film loop is pulled out of the film cartridge and threaded around a large spindle.
The camera takes C-mount lenses and goes up to 250 frames per second. Actually, it can go to 300 frames per second however the film can actually melt the plastic cartridge as it exits the supply side of the film cartridge so the top speed was downgraded to 250 frames per second.
I saw some rare footage shot with the camera in it's hey day at a horse track. The footage, as seen on my movie viewer, is frickin amazing and blows away the action sequences shot in Sea Biscuit.
It's amazing stuff. I mean, Sea Biscuit should have used this super-8 camera for some amazing close-up wide angle super-slow motion action shots.
But hey, let the dimwits mull over using a mini-dv camera when they could have been using a kodachrome 40, 250 frame per second C-mount pin registered Super-8 camera instead.
<font size="2" face="verdana, sans-serif">The only company that I ever heard of that considered making a true pin-registered camera was Panavision as an aquisition format for the then new and struggling HBO channel. However, they never made one.Quote:

What is the brand of the camera you have that's pin registered? Why not post some photos? I'm sure we'd all like to see it. Specifically, I'd like to see the mechanism where the film is pulled from the cart. I'm curious how they can do that and not scratch the film.
Roger
In an effort to try and give some credit to another Super-8 poster I looked on Brantley's forum trying to find the proposed threading diagram that was a dead ringer for the camera I have.
Maybe it was on the Shooting 8mm forum where I saw it. Someone posted the drawing/diagram in the last 6 months, but I can't find it!
It might have been crimsonson, Rollem Film, or Roxics. I did an extensive search on Brantley's forum and could not find the post, maybe it was on shooting 8mm?
<font size="2" face="verdana, sans-serif">Actually, I would rather see photos of your camera. What is the model and who made it?Quote:

Actually, I'm trying not to divulge too much information at this time because the people who made the camera have not dealt with it in over 10 years and if a bunch of people were to find them and call them about it it would ruin the bigger picture.
This person generously spent a day with me and in general they fry much bigger fish on a daily basis.
An article about the camera can be found in the American Cinematographer Magazine, October 1973.
My goal is to try and find more of the cameras before they are accidentally thrown away and I'm looking at the possibility of doing a documentary on the history of the camera and how it was used.
<font size="2" face="verdana, sans-serif">Okay, so cover the name of the camera with electrical tape or use Photoshop to mask it. Just show a photo of the outside and the inside. No one will know who made it or who to contact about it unless you tell us so there's no risk.Quote:

Post some photos.
Ok dokie.
Just so you know, Ebay has several American Cinematographer auctions going on, and they even had one issue from August of 1973!
Only off by two months!
It's just a matter of time before the magical October 1973 issue becomes available via auction.
Alex--
Just show some pics to back up what you are saying......
People aren't beating down the door in numbers like you think when it comes to Super8. If this company would be overwhelmed by demand for such a camera they can't be doing to much business.
Good lord...
So, again, what's the point of witholding this, but still touting it?
"I've got something YOU don't"
"What's that?"
"Not tellin"
Yeah, I'm sure the company wouldn't want 5 emails bombing their inboxes.
Oh well.. Honestly, I'll probably never have one, and since the only two I've heard of will likely collect dust for the next several years, what do I care? It's simply a matter of expanding the knowledge base of a small but die-hard community.
Oh, wait, that's right... it's about almighty power.
Oh, and I guess I missed the bit about hoarding them.
So, if the preservation of these wonderful cameras is so important to you, why wouldn't you want everyone to be able to recognize them?
Cranium, you are jumping to some unnecessary conclusions.
Please explain, then.
What am I missing? What do I not understand correctly? You always talk about how others should keep their posts updated and such, so that all of the info is correct, right? Like it will be better for the community, right? Then you withold info. If you're the only person that has this info, which you seem to think you are (and you're not) what if you die in a tragic car accident this afternoon? The info would die with you, and the community that we all love (each in our own way) would be damaged.
<font size="2" face="verdana, sans-serif">You have two rare pin-registered super 8 cameras and you haven't shot any footage with either one of them?Quote:

Please post some photos of these mysterious pin-registered wonders. I, for one, would love to see them and you can post photos without compromising the secrecy of the company that is responsible for them.
I have a bigger fish to fry at the moment.
I need to be able to power up a video camera that was purchased on Ebay so that it can be put on my copy stand for shoot stills to video. At that point I'll gladly shoot some close-ups of the inside of the camera, make a video print, and then scan that and post it.
I've spent several hours researching the optimal way to power up the video camera so that I can also use it as a component source for my UVW-1800.
Once I resolve that issue I can move ahead.
For the record, I made one reference to the pin registered super-8 camera on my super-8mm.net
I've never mentioned the super-8 camera on this forum until asked about it, specifically because I wanted to do tests with it first.
I have shot two cartridges of film. The first lens I tried was not parafocal, (did not hold focus when zooming out), the second lens I tried I got the footage back and have not been able to transfer it because it was a holiday week.
<font size="2" face="verdana, sans-serif">hehehehe, you crack me up.Quote:

Should I start watching for whited hooded flame carrying henchman?
<font size="2" face="verdana, sans-serif">I don't quite understand? What's unclear? This quote was taken out of context, where I was originally making a point that witholding any information from a community of people you claim to serve is a disservice, and such information could tragically be lost along with the holder of said information. Fortunately, there are others that know the camera you speak of. Personally, I think your above mention of "Actually, I'm trying not to divulge too much information at this time because the people who made the camera have not dealt with it in over 10 years and if a bunch of people were to find them and call them about it it would ruin the bigger picture," is a tad silly. What's the bigger picture that someone could ruin? Is Visual Instrumentation going to get swarmed with emails about this? Doubt it. I really don't see what the benefit of being secretive is. Kinda just makes you look immature, IMO.Quote:

No, I wasn't making a threat, I was trying to make a point. If this was actually important info to the community, I'd be sad if it was lost. As it is, it won't be lost.

Congrats.
The company doesn't need the headache. The cameras were custome made one by one, but they weren't huge profit centers. As I said, they have much bigger fish to fry. However, they would service the existing cameras.
I was given pictures of the camera, but none of them show the camera opened up, so I'll have to shoot photos of the inside of the camera as the outside of the camera doesn't reveal that it is a pin registered camera.
The American Cinematographer article does show a drawing of the cameras threading path.
Because it hadn't crossed my mind.
I'm sure there's MANY things each of us have experienced/seen/owned, whatever, that we have forgotten, or it hasn't come up, or maybe we just assume others know about it. I'm kind of surprised actually that others don't know of these. **** , I'd never heard of a Nalcom before I got on Brantley's board. I simply hadn't thought about it.
I don't understand what you mean by that?
How is this at all self-serving on my part?
I was just trying to explain my logic. It appeared to me that you took my above example as a threat or something (based on your white-hood comment- I may have mistaken that myself...)
How on earth is this self-serving?
What do you mean?
I'm not trying to be a dick at all here, Alex.
Do I need to explain my point again? Is anyone else having trouble understanding my point?
Again, there's REALLY no sarcasm intended. I just don't see why witholding this information is so important to you.
There have been SEVERAL discussions about Super-8 cameras and what cameras have the best registration.
These discussions have been ongoing for the last 2 or 3 years. I only came across the camera I now own in the last 3 months.
Since it appears you already know who, what, where, why haven't YOU ever volunteered any information that YOU had well before I got the camera?

Cranium, you HAVE posted on Brantley's forum how much you AGREED with that banning decision back then and apparently you still do believe it should continue, two years later.
Please give me a link to where I agreed with the banning.
Also, please don't make assumptions about how I "apparently" feel about things. If you'd like to know, just ask.
But please, can you explain the self-serving part? I really don't understand that.
Why should I ask you how you feel when you posted the following on Brantley's forum

[Sad] [Sad]
You decide how you wanna live.
Whatever case you make now about the pin registered camera will only make the case for keeping me banned from Brantely's forum that much weaker.
Why do these people always throw everything way out of proportion, Mr. Alex?
I only asked about a camera.
You, Mr. Alex, were very polite and gave very good reasons to hold off temporarily like a good reporter with a good story should until he's got something to present like a complete story. Also you let the other parties involved feel comfortable.
Then these ******* *********** **** wads jump on you for no ******* reason.
I see things have not changed in my abstinence.
PD
I figured that was the thread you'd dredge up. As I had asked, please post the link. The full context may explain what is a rather emotional response.
Personally, I don't care if anyone ever gets banned from anywhere. I never said I agreed with it then, thought you should be banned, or still do think you should be banned. I just like to see people acting in a mature, resposible manner and being considerate to others (which I think we can all agree, Syracuse WASN'T being in that thread.)
I still maintain maintain my real point in that post, though. It seems like EVERY thread in this forum that gets going anywhere gets hijacked into some diatribe about your banning. It's your forum, do what you will.
In this thread I was simply trying to find out why you found it so important to keep this info to yourself. I was trying to sort out the logic, but I see again that it all comes back to getting banned from Brantley's forum. I don't know why I think I can come to this board without getting drawn into some firefight. I think I've been pretty benign in this thread, and yet I get accused of making self-serving statements, and STILL get no explanation of what you mean by that. What do you have against me? I'm trying to play nice, here, and I've tried to point out the times I've thought my post could be misconstrued, just to avoid those situations.
I've tried and tried, but any time I disagree with you, or even ask you a simple question, you either delete my post, ban me for a week without telling me (I think it was because I own a Workprinter?) or send some mysterious stranger to attack me. I just don't get it.
Alex, you won't find ANYBODY more neutral in the land of Super8 than I am. Perhaps many that are as neatural and/or open minded, but none moreso. I don't understand why you have to make most people your enemy if you don't agree at every little turn.
Man, I just can't come to this forum without feeling attacked.
ALL I SAID was that I don't understand why you would withold information from your readers. Then I said what a shame it would be if you were rendered unable to share this info, and I used the car accident as an example.
I'm sorry if you feel I've been unreasonable. I'll stand by what I've said. If you (or any of the regular readers of your forum) would like me to not participate in your forums any longer, please just ask. There's no need for a banning. I'm more than willing to vacate anyplace that I'm not welcome.
I would still like to see an explanation of why you think my statements are self-serving. I do think I deserve at least this much.
Paradise Lost, it's interesting that you used the word "reporter". In a sense, I have been a reporter when it came to tracking these cameras. I found a copy of a letter dated from 1990 that I had written to the individual who recently sold me the pin registered camera. THIRTEEN YEARS in the making to get this camera. The person probably didn't even remember the original letter I wrote to them, I DIDN'T remember writing the letter 13 years ago until I saw the copy I had kept.
Yes, I was on the prowl for a camera like this thirteen years ago, then I forgot about it until I found a spec sheet that I had saved about the pin registered camera three months ago.
A month later, I was able to purchase the camera.
I would have already ranked the film I shot but it was a short week last week because of Thanksgiving.
It's also going to cost me additional money because I will be rank transfering about 10-12 minutes of footage that was given to me that was also shot with a pin registered camera many years ago. I'm certainly not going to charge the person who gave me the footage, and I'm certainly not going to ask for a freebie from the rank transfer house either.
To pay for this time, I have to work. Which is what I'll be doing for the next few hours. If it costs me money to move forward in regards to the pin registered camera, criticizing me when I never
made the original topic post about the camera seems a bit unfair.
And I find it odd that people like Brantley have chosen to permanently ban someone who has been a Super-8 advocate for the last 20 years.
Cranium.
I don't want to be held to a higher standard than Brantley or Andreas. By making demands of me as you have, you have elevated me to a higher standard while simultaneously relegating me to being the guy with his own forum who...bla, bla, bla...
You keep ignoring the fact that I never started any pin registered topic post on this forum. I have replied to questions, and I have not rushed into anything that is going to cost me additional money right now.
I spent NINE-HUNDRED DOLLARS ON A 28 VOLT BATTERY
to run my camera, I'm not spending anymore until
I can afford to.
Posting pictures right now, will cost me money because I will be prioritizing it over SEVERAL other ongoing projects and deadlines I have to contend with, meaning checks will arrive later rather than sooner.
If it's of any consequence, I do appreciate your patronage. Too bad so few do patronize this forum with posts.
-------------------------------------
It's silly for other forums to think of me as competition when I freely posted on their forums and only started my own forum when I had no place to post.

<font size="2" face="verdana, sans-serif">For the record, you registered on Hostboard almost one year later than I did. So apparently you weren't around to see my late night postings on Brantley's forum to existing topics in an effort to make the forum look fresh and vibrant when it was still pretty small. I see now that some thought I was showing off when what I was really doing was just helping (and yes, there were others otherwise I would have had no topics to reply to).Quote:

Your "dying in a car accident comment" was self-serving.
The implication being that if I had never acquired a super-8 pin registered camera but still died in a car accident then it would be no big thing.
Even if that is a true statement, it's still self-serving because I have contributed as much as I possibly could given the circumstances of my banning. Suddenly, it's as if I am hoarding information?

and the beat goes on...
...On another forum where Alex can't post because he's apparently been lifetime banned. The Discussion continues without Alex.
Jesus, Alex, you're reading way too much into my car accident example. Really, man. I'd be sad to hear of your demise. Truly.
But I was making a point...
Anyway.
Yeah, I'd say you were witholding information. I'm not judging you for it, but read the thread. You have information, and you wouldn't share it. I was simply asking why.
You've posted on the 8mm forum before, quite recently, actually. Why wouldn't you now? But I don't understand why you're miffed about that? You didn't want to discuss these cameras anyway, right?
I haven't witheld any information about the camera.
Posting a picture when I don't have the time to post the picture is not witholding information.
Speaking of withholding information, nice of you to not mention me at all in the new post you started on shooting 8mm.
It's as if I was in a car accident and no longer exist.
Oh geez...
I'll send you a Christmas card to make up for the car accident analogy.
I didn't figure you'd want to be implicated in the impending flood of emails that Visual Instrumentation is bound to get.
You'll please note that I'm serious, and I also removed the contact information from the .pdf.
I'll update my thread, if you like.
BTW- I'm cool with you not having time to post pics. I totally understand that. But really go back and look at the thread. You're being rather secretive, not even revealing the name of the camera, and certainly not describing any of the features in any amount of detail. That's simply my perception, however, and it's quite possible that you've not felt compelled to share this information.
I did.
So there we go. Paradise Lost, instead of calling me names, and accusing me of attacking Alex, it might occur to you to be thankful that somebody has actually posted the information you requested.
Posted it where? I don't see anything posted on here? Maybe you could provide a link??????
Oh sorry. I figured you had seen the link in Alex's message.
Here you go.

Again, HOW is this self-serving? What do I stand to gain by saying this?
I'm totally at a loss here.
BTW- I had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with you getting banned from anywhere. I don't see any connection between getting banned from someone else's forum, and then going on your own forum- the one you want to flourish and be a source of information- and effectively saying "nyah nyah nyah, I have something really neato that you don't and I'm not tellin' what it is..."
