Re: Winter Storm Watch
I bet everyone is already running around going "I heard it was going to snow 8 inches".

Re: Winter Storm Watch
I already got the ladies downstairs in a tizzy LOL
"milk and bread milk and bread! We'll never get to work tomorrow!"
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
It's always amusing to see everyone run around like that and then afterwards get mad when it didn't happen like they thought it would. Of course that's of one the reasons some think the weatherman is always wrong, which makes it even better, haha.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
I hope it don't...lets get the school year over and done with!!!
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
Right now the forecast isn't living up to its prediction...
we're not even seeing rain anymore.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
Going to take a great deal of heavy snow to overcome the high ground temperatures.
51* in Coeburn at the moment.

rain to snow was the forecast. It's less overcast too. No thunderstorms.

Re: Winter Storm Watch
Yeah, and the forecast has been right....so far.
The discussions give more detail. I don't think people fully understand the forecasts or read them correctly, which goes back to the snowfall forecast deal.

Re: Winter Storm Watch
Temperature is dropping. Once the cold front passes, the temperatures should start falling. Down 6* in Coeburn since 3PM already.
That said, I don't see us getting 6-8" out of this event. We never get that much from wrap-around. 2-3" of light powder at most.

Sitting here in Norton VA, we're not seeing what the forecast said we'd be seeing (rain and/or thunderstorms turning to snow by late afternoon). Sure it may come later but the original doom and gloom forecast has fizzled. We saw rain this morning and it quit before noon.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
Temperature has dropped about 10 degrees here in Wise, down to 41.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
yeah, it's dropping fast, and I've seen drizzles of rain all day. I don't think it'll be a bad snow, until later on tonight.. maybe around 7 or 8, it might start coming down..

I can see how that could be taken. I think others were putting a little differently. Breaking that one down, probably would be like..."Rain showers and a few thunderstorms early in the afternoon". Keeping in mind it's a area forecast, still a wide area, some thunderstorms were present earlier across the area (had one myself) and there was rain this morning and around noon-early afternoon throughout the area (some places saw it stop earlier, some later..it's not street level). The front pushed through after taking much of the moisture with it. Now, there are still rain showers lingering around (NWS has a 30% chance of showers this afternoon, which is pretty accurate for the area) and will increase later as we await things to come together, which should be snow showers. The forecast has been pretty much right on for the area, so far. That one particular forecast you posted though is a little different, and I can see the way it's worded how that one could be seen differently. Some others were a little better. More detailed forecasts are supposed to be delivered by TV meteorologists and in the NWS Area forecast discussions anyway, although the latter can be difficult to understand at first though.
Some of the change over times could be a little late or early (probably already gone over for some), but still pretty close either way and about as good as one could do, haha.

Yeah, most of us are only expected to see the lighter amounts (1-4). Some could do better or worse, that's the nature of it. That 6-8 range is expected more the Black Mountain areas and such... That area has seen 6-12 at least a few times this season. Some have still a good deal of snow this season, just not down here

Re: Winter Storm Watch
Well that makes sense since those mountains seperating VA/KY is what keeps a good deal of the northern moisture out of the area.
If we get 4-8" of snow, it will come from the S/SW and gulf moisture.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
Temp keeps dropping here in Coeburn...was snowing a little bit has stopped....the wind is terrible though
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
We got maybe 3" at my house by 8:00 am today.

Re: Winter Storm Watch
there is a gorgeous snow outside right now. Probably the hardest, and biggest flakes I've seen in a while.. Absolutely love it, and time to break out the camera!

Re: Winter Storm Watch
Is it forecasted to snow tonight and tomorrow in Wise County? I need to be in court in the morning, and Im driving from Kingsport. Thanks for any info.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
It should taper off late this afternoon or tonight I believe. Its spotty currently. Probaby and inch and a half at the worst spots as I was coming to work and currently looking at our parking lot. Roads were fine, but there was a fender bender near the overlook as I came in. Nothing major to worry about I don't believe.

-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
We've got about 3-4 inches here in Wise with the sun trying to pop out right now evening though it is still snowing.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
yeah, there was about 2-3 on my porch rails this morning, and Im right next to Robo's.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
Advisories and warnings were updated again at about 10:30 this morning. Details in the warning for Wise say another 1-4 inches is possible through the afternoon...warning expires at 6 p.m. Snow advisory locations elsewhere for SWVA and NE TN say additional accumulations up to 2 inches could be seen with up to 3 in the higher elevations. The heavy snow warnings (until 1 a.m. Thursday) call for Bell, Harlan, and Letcher say another 3-6 above 2500 ft. (totaling around 6-12), with another 1-4 in the lower elevations.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
Norton City Schools were closed today.
That should tell you something.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch

Mt. LeConte, in the Smokies, was nearing the 2 foot mark as of their report, and through 9 a.m. they had about 7-8 in Lynch and up on Black Mountain.
-
Re: Winter Storm Watch
Leconte is over a mile high funny they should throw it in there.
I wish we could get 2 ft down here tho.

Re: Winter Storm Watch
Considering it's under the category of central valley-smoky mountains, most people know anyway, they always put their reports up, they usually indicate the elevation in discussion sometimes when mention total possibilities, and the much higher totals should be a clue...I doubt most need that explained. I mean if things aren't obvious after that, then I'm not sure what to say, haha. At least I see they put the term "lower elevations" in some (dumb it down)..not that it would help any though, no one sees it in the advisory/warning details

Re: Winter Storm Watch
Wise Co. already closed for Thursday

Your saying most people know were Mt leconte is and its elevation? Also theyre weather is totally different from wise. 2 yrs ago in june they had 6 inches of snow. Dont recall any snow being here in June.

Re: Winter Storm Watch
"category of central valley-smoky mountains"..location (like SWVA, NE TN, etc.), and as I said, they reference it and the elevation often. I was talking about most who read the discussions and such. It was a list of locations through that the area the Morristown NWS covers...click the link. Had nothing to do with Wise's weather, of course their weather is different, much different. I apologize for putting it in the post and not clarifying things before, sorry everyone....

Should apologize for being so anal. Just made a comment I thought it was funny they mentioned with it our weather. It wasnt like I was passing judgement on anyone. I dont really hang out in the weather forums that often. After working on the mountain I was aware that the weather can be totally opposite. But apology accepted. No need for further discussion understood.
