And what about those of you who sew?
I think I startled myself the other day with my admission that I don't like to sew anymore. (Ooooh...saying that really bothers me.) So, anyway, I went through some of my fabric and cut out two Nellie/Samantha dresses. They're sitting on my sewing table, and driving me crazy! I want to sew them up, but I don't want to sew them up.
Anyway...it got me thinking, and wondering what you all do for doll clothing. Do you only buy from AG, do you buy from other sources, or do you make your own...or what????
I have a really hard time buying from other sources. I haven't even been able to get myself to buy from the Dollies Dressmaker. And I think she does amazing things.
Right now, my collection consists of only AG clothing. That could change if I ever sew those dresses! LOL!!!!

Well, Right now I only have the Bitty Twins.I sew for them.I love to sew.If I had a historical doll, I don't know.I might want to buy clothes for a historical doll.
I always said I would never buy any clothes, but between this sale and the coupon, I have bought a few things with no regrets. The Bitty Twins outfits, for example.I could not have bought the fabric and supplies to make them for what I paid for the outfits with socks, tights and shoes included. What a deal!
For the most part, I plan to stick to sewing my own.

I bought some dresses for my DD's AG dolls a few years ago, but just recently gave them away. My girls wouldn't use them. I'm not sure why... Like you, I too can sew, just don't want to. And I've seen some very cute outfits lately!! So tempted! But they'll just go to waste (unless I buy them for myself )

I have pretty much all AG clothes save for one I made. One of my favorite things about AG is stories that go along with the dolls, and I like having outfits and asseccories from the stories. Although there are many talented seamstresses out there selling gorgeous clothes fitting the eras of AGs, it just isn't the same for me with out a story to go with it.

OK, here is a true admission. I once tried to sew a doll dress and had a horrible time at it. I think I don't understand seams. So I only purchase clothing. Mostly AG brand. But I have tried a few others. I also have purchased one doll dress that someone has made.

I have a very few non AG clothing. I just can't seem to sew them either. I even have some all cut out and such. Just isn't happening.

I mostly buy AG stuff. I own one skirt that is handmade which I bought in ebay and 2 Tolly pajamas. Everything else is AG.

Mostly AG, but I do own a few non-AG things. If I like it I buy it. I am not good with sewing at all. I have this one aunt who is sewing up a bunch of non-AG things for me and DD, and since she doesn't work I am going to pay her. She will insist that we don't, but I will anyway some way. I can make my own patterns and sew just about anything. When I first got my Josefina, I wanted to save money and made her birthday outfit. It came out perfect and I actually like it better than the AG version because the manton is long and drapes around her head beautifully. But because I was so picky about the fabric, the outfit ended up costing more than the AG version. I've drawn up the patterns for Kit's orange dress and her blue dresses and already have 6 Neela-style India outfits partially finished, along with all the jewelry that goes with it.
But strangely enough, I'd rather buy an AG outfit now than make one. I think part of that is due to the collector mentality. "Oh you MUST have the original! Anything less is completely worthless." So my sewing seems to be in that "completely worthless" catagory.
It's hard to juggle these two mindsets. I do love to sew and really enjoy seeing a finished garment. But the pleasure I have in a handmade garment doesn't seem to be shared with others because my homemade garments don't have that little tag inside that says "Made in China for American Girl." I hope to make Kit's blue dresses, orange dress and yellow dress this year. She really needs them! Hopefully, AG won't make them before I get done.

I have bought a lot of non AG outfits from ebay.
I have to admit that many of the outfits are not as good a fit or as well made as the AG outfits.
On the other hand, I have some absolutely gorgeous homemade outfits that are far superior to AG clothes. I cherish these the most because not only are they beautiful, but they are also unique.
My all time favorite outfit is one of the beautifully unique ones, which is even more special because it was made by my dear friend. It has love stitched right in.
