Sounds like claptrap radio to me. No, I'll tell
you what this is, this is the seemingly 'natural'
'evolution' of myspace egoism: topless pix ain't
enough, dodgy demos ain't enough, so know we must
hear them fart on about about how 'fucking cool,
man, it's just so fucking cool' myspace music,
allegedly is. [img]eek.gif[/img]
Talk about contridictory ethics, indeed. If
suggestions of 'subscription' after only its first
49 minutes isn't delusional rabies on the loose,
Zeus knows what is. [img]wink.gif[/img]
How can it be 'new' and 'cool' and 'punk' and
'independant' and all that cobblers, if it's such
a dated concept, musically pooh-poohable and
intrinsically profiteering?
(Tangent: a classmate of mine has a myspace site.
It's only for his music, really, which is actually
quite unique, as it goes: it's performed exclusively
on a certain 1980s range of keyboard, but recorded
on professional equipment - think Les Rhythmes
Digitales on a student-loan budget. Anyway, he
'confessed' to this site, one day in class, and
I bet him a million pints, that I log onto to it,
and find an obligatory, meaningless 'Thanks for
the add, dude' line lurking within one his pages
or blogs [or whatever], within a minute. He took
the bet, thinking his Friends list would be
his quirky bunch of English mates [Air,
BMXs, retro trainers, floppy fringes] who followed
him there when his erstwhile band split up a few
months ago, but he should have a had a recent
read of his site really, because it only took me
10 seconds.
I - So who's So-and-so?
Him (peering over his monitor) - Who?
I - This one here, the one with her tits out. She
says: 'Thanks for the add, dude, see you around
sometime.' She doesn't mention your music.
Him - I've no idea.)
I remember quite a few of us farting around with
home-made radio shows back in the mp3.com days
of '98 - none of us dared suggest anyone should
pay for it, though. But then again, mp3.com were
always out for a quick buck, which is why it went
tits up, and it's only now, post-Napster, post-
iPod etc., that musicians are now truly blinded
enough by download capitalism, that they believe
everything they stick online can be sold in some
way - they feel inherently obliged to, maybe.
Saying that, I think we should all do it, and then
have a vote about whose 'radio show' is more in-
teresting; or whose attracts the most interest from
ASCAP and the BMI, anyway. Hohoho!

As for "rad", I admit the second I saw the title I thought to myself "gee, I haven't heard that word since the Skate-Punk Summer of 1986"! No offense meant to Mandi at all, as I will still call people "cats" from time to time.

I'm gonna make a internet radio show...about musicians who were glam but try to hide the fact that they were ever once into all the hair , eyeliner, and lipstick...haha. They will be like "ME?...into glam?...No...I never was...That's Pussy Music". Then I'll play a previous glam band they were in and post a pic link...LOL...that would be classic.

A radio show called SEX, RUGS, AND ROCK N ROLL....and play nothing but hairbands that now wear wigs...ahaha.

The lexicon of 80's slang is a funny old thing,
innit. 'Rad' isn't too bad. It isn't as naff-
sounding as say, 'gnarly'. Although, at least
us skaters of yore had a dictionary. Skaters
of today - those filthy youff! - probably spend
too much time txt'ing to care about creating

Budweiser are also probably pissed that 'wassuuup'
never really caught on.

Maybe we could do a collective radio show. We
all record an hour's worth of stuff, once a week,
and then somebody takes a project manager/producer
role and gets it all together and online?

Darren, "dude" has been around for well over one hundred years. It started out as a cowboy term for fops from the Eastern USA. In the 1970s, it started to be used for glamsters, and it eventually became a surfer term used the way "man" had become. The early 1980s use of the term was sort of a collision between the two latter meanings.
