Continuing on the thread we had about how to define a glam band, I was thinking the best way to describe groups such as Badlands, Childs Play, Tainted Angel, Electric Angels, Warrant, South Gang, Danger Danger and Skid Row would be as hair metal acts. They are often classed as glam, but when you look at the difference between say Badlands and Legz Diamond, both musically and image-wise the two have very little in common. Again this is only my opinion, but I have read lists posted like this one http://www.metal-rules.com/polls/top.../top50glam.htm which lead me to make this conclusion. Def Leppard a glam band? Whitesnake? GREAT WHITE.....c'mon?????!!!!!!
You can always tell a band that immediately set out to glam it to the max. Again I mention the Pretty Boy Floyd album for an example. But how about bands like Slamhound, which were powerful and almost thrash sounding but had the full-on glam image. Or who remembers Pharoah and Phantasm? If you just heard them on the radio you wouldn't have dreamed that they could be classed as glamsters. But then you see a picture and they made Poison look like Henry Rollins!!!!!!
Just an opinion, what do you guys think...????

Hair Metal is just a name MTV made up to call Glam Metal bands.

Personally? I HATE the term Hair "Metal".
Glam Rock, Shock Rock, Cock Rock, Sleaze, Glam, whatever is fine by me LOL.

By the way, I wouldn't say Slamhound were thrashy sounding but more a very dirty sleazy hard rocking band. Songs like "I'm A Dog`, `Suger Don't Knock At My Door` etc.... very dirty and sleazy.
As for Phantasm. I loved them. Glam as hell image, but musically very dark and gothy pop rock. I loved them [img]smile.gif[/img]

Yeah me too I remember Phantasm very well...So what about the bands I mentioned, Skid Row, Badlands, Warrant and them, they weren't glam...or were they? What do you think?

Oh and Anddi, which Phantasm..I believe there was 2. One here in the UK and an American one..I even remember therebeing a Russian band that shared the name. All 3 of them had a glammy image too! I remember the UK one most. Great singer with a cool voice....Oh and those hair extensions ha ha!

To me Hair Metal is bands such as:
Danger Danger, Steelheart, Whitesnake, Heavens Edge, Skid Row, etc.
Glam Metal is:
Britny Fox, Cinderella, Poison, Tuff, etc.

I can't stand the term Hairmetal!
This was created after the 80's were over by people who viewed the whole decade as a big joke with just big hair and very little else.
I have never been able to see why bands who look boring are considered so much better and more serious than bands who look great, but I guess that just goes to prove how little most critics really know about music.
The "hair metal" chategory can usually be split into Glam Metal, Heavy Metal, AOR metal, hard rock and sleaze rock and you've got almost the whole decade covered with terms that aren't condecending LOL
A lot of fans of this music has started using the hairmetal term as well now and I guess that is in much the same vein as black rappers use the word nigger all the time... I have no clue, but I won't be using it..... it's the "enemies terms" for my music!

Bands like Danger Danger and Heaven's Edge were never Metal. I prefer Hard Rock or Melodic Rock. I know being called a rock band is quite vague, and a lot of bands are judged by their looks as opposed to the musical ability. How people can snigger at the mention of hair, when some of those guys were the most gifted musicians around, is unfortunate.
