Just got a couple dvd's from level 42.com . There is a new dvd from around 83-84 era with Phil Gould playing called Rockblast, you will see it there. Man what a groove this guy had, even by today's players he's really got one of the most fluid feels I have not really heard except for maybe Weckl when playing solid feels. Also, new live at wembly has him as well with some new footage and 5.1 sound. I love Gary Husband but there really is something special about Gould!! Thought anyone interested might want to check them out. I ordered through paypal and even though its over-sea's I got mine within 4 days!!

Outside of Jeff, I finf Phil's 16th note grooves the most satisfying. His fills coming out of time are very fluid.
There's a sweet fill from "Physical Presence" that is so light on the snare. In fact, World Machine is a MUST have for all into pocket playing. That is a classic!

Pocket Playing is very underrated--Jeff and Carlos get a lot of recognition, but to lay deep in the pocket and make those hats sing with proper balence between BD, SD and Hats is not about the notes...it's all about the feel and pulse conveyed which can be as difficult to execute as a complicated funk or fusion groove.

Phil was a really good drummer, I felt. Great chemistry with Mark (King) he really developed, and he had a strong character about his playing .... once he got it together I have to say, (those first couple of albums I don't he was at all happening.) What he turned into though I thought was great. Distinctive, groovy and good character and good sound.
Pity he seemed to just retire a long time ago. Maybe drums wasn't a strong enough vocation for him ultimately.
While Level 42 was never my particularly finest hour it's a shame you didn't give "Live At The Apollo" a listen too - (the most recent DVD.) I've been quite pleased with that one.

Phil Gould is an AWESOME musician, and definitely one of my favorite drummer !!!
One of my favorite song played by him is "True Belivers" from the album named "True Colour", it's the one where you can hear the famous "Hot Water" !!!
Phil really knows how to make to "dance" his hi-hat, his sound, his tempo and his groove are perfect, and he was also a great song writer.

Yeah, PP, when I think pocket-Godfathers of Groove*, I'm also thinking Gadd, JP, CV, Keltner, Marotta, Newmark, Ersk, Omar, Garib, etc [the list goes on]; but those are a few of the true heavyweights, or GFOG*. [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] Gould was fantastic too.
Oh yeah, Gary "ain't got no worries" much either... [img]wink.gif[/img]
Groove and chops. Nice.
While I DEF am & have been huge on say, Weck [need say no more], or Gould, I also find that guys like both GaryH & DennisC tend to have a nice, earthy, groovy, organic, subtle ebb-&-flow feel to their great-time-playing that really hits me at gut level AW. [img]cool.gif[/img] [Whatever that means to any given person.] ;c)

A note to Gary...
Level 42 was great and I love World Machine, BUT...please don't think your role with the band is second. It is not! I love your stuff with L42 and dig it all. You have made a significant contribution to their music. Of course, you are so much more than L42, and I respect that as much as Phil's role in the band. Great to hear from you Gary!
I love Jeff with TOTO, can't say enough, but I accept Simon's playing and role in the band as well.

It's nice to see Phil's talents on drums remembered, recognised and talked about a bit. That hi-hat stuff he came up with really was unique to him ... and there was an album called "Physicial Presense" they did which probably features one of my all-time favourite snare drum sounds. Wow that thing really wailed. It was really cranked and really did shout - every stroke!
For me though, with that particular band, I think I had a couple of tracks on "Staring At The Sun" that were pretty good, but generally I think I probably did the best I have ever managed to do for that music on what is featured on the quite recent "Live At The Apollo" DVD (available from http://www.level42.com/shop/recording.asp?recid=20)

Thanks Gary, I actually am ordering the appolo dvd this week. I look foward to seeing it, I love your playing and you and Mark have great chemistry. You can tell that he is glad you are there!!! , although I think from seeing the Reading dvd and Mark King live dvd that Mike Lindup is sorely missed! Any hopes for new Level 42 cd?

I felt the Reading DVD and the Mark King Live DVD were both pretty awful products. The Live At Reading was filmed in a totally unsuitable aircraft hanger of a building, with my only memory of that gig being one of just hanging on to the click track for the benefit of a band that couldn't hear a thing on stage. In addition, the mix was dreadful. The Mark King live was from a TV show in Germany - my first gig at a few days notice with Mark's new group. Should never have made it onto video. Again, a dreadful mix makes the thing unwatchable for me - I bought a copy and threw it away within minutes of playing it.
The Live At The Appollo DVD is a different deal. Good venue, mixed pretty well, and much more representative all round.
Lindup joined the band for the last show of this year as a special guest. Don't know too much about his involvement in the future. There is a new album in the works for this year to record. No idea when it'll transpire, but it will be fun to do if I'm involved, (which I'm told I am!)
