The Runaways

Did anyone happen to see that documentary on Showtime last night?? I didn't catch it from the beginning. It was really interesting. I slightly remember reading about it last year and how Joan Jett refused to be interviewed for the documentary.

Forgive me if I sound juvenile but what exactly happened that made Joan Jett not want to speak to her former bandmates? The Runaways came out '75-'80 which meant I was 2 yrs old when they first came out and 7 yrs old when they finally disbanded. I remember loving Joan Jett later on when the whole "I love rock n roll" took off. Then I heard Lita Ford when I was in the 8th or 9th grade with her Back to the Cave crap (sorry I didn't like it). So I'm clueless to what happened to them between 1980 to 1988.

Perhaps Mr. Trivia Creeper can shed some light on this hehe....

<font size="4" face="Arial">Well I didn't because I had no idea of what the answer was. Turns out, what little I did think I know, I was dead wrong. I thought Joan and the rest (especially one of them) did NOT get along.

According to everything Vicki Tischler says on her message board/in her publicity releases for her film "Edgeplay", Joan was completely uncooperative regarding that film and she is more or less persona non grata in the crowd of former Runaways. (Interestingly enough, that crowd also includes those around/in Girlschool.)

Personally, I think that Joan's audience now would be so diametrically opposed to those who liked the five member Runaways that it would be fruitless to even attempt a reunion for any purpose. Maybe Joan is correct in not wanting to try and relive the past.

I guess she hides it well in the documentary, and everybody has nothing but high praise for Joan. But I remember reading that Joan was rather NOT nice about this project. Didn't she even want it stopped?

I guess I could see Joan wanting to NOT relive the past. Especially since her solo carrer is so dang strong nowdays.

joan has nothing against her ex bandmates, she still talks to them. she just wants nothing at all to do with bringing back the runaways what so ever. i saw an interview with joan a couple years back where she stated that her and lita discussed doing something musically together but they couldn't get their timing right. i remember her saying it had something to do with lita having a baby and wanting to focus on being a mother.

Joan's main audience nowadays is feminists and riot grrls, and they do not like the earlier, five member Runaways. The media loves Joan as the "founder" of that misbegotten cult, which was in actuality a spinoff of grunge, an equally misbegotten cult.

No, I think a large part of her attitude is due to her trying to maintain her audience with women who blame men in general for all their problems("feminists"). The earlier band was seen as catering to male fantasies, something so horrible to the Seattle crowd that it would give them spasms of despair to even contemplate. It wasn't true, of course, but the media makes it appear so.

Personally, while I will always respect Joan for having the moxie to be in the band in the first place, I think she ruined it by trying to steer them towards punk.

I say...hang it up...let it be...and all that other cliched shit.

Well yeah, a Runaways reunion would be silly. But it would have been nice for her to have atleast talked about it. She didn't have to join up again, just talk about "those old days".

"Wasted" was from the Jett led days, right? That's a great friggin' song.

<font size="4" face="Arial">LOL I didn't know that a feminist was someone who blames men for her problems haha. Seriously thanks for clarifying that for me. I always thought a feminist was more like a female who hate men cuz they got fucked over by a man. I also thought that a feminist was a female that stood for "equal" rights.
