Los Angeles

Hello everyone!

I'm Andreas Brobjer from Sweden. I'm 17 right now and soon turning 18. I have recently decided to move to Los Angeles this fall, to try my carreer there and I believe I have a good chance of making it.

Here in Sweden I'm considered what you would call a 'do-er' and I'm known to always do what it takes to get what I want for my carreer. Since moving to Los Angeles will be the biggest move I will ever do, I'm going to need a little help from any kind person who are willing to give me their helping hand - in any way.

One of these things will be getting tips on where to go when I'm there. To survive, I will need to get work as soon as possible - but I'm not entirely sure on where to head, since the business isn't exactly like in Sweden. I have big plans with this, but I know have to start from scratch. Where could I get good work fast?

Does anyone here know any names of nightclubs in L.A that are hiring drummers? I would be very greatful if anyone here at the board have the names and maybe even addresses of any specific clubs and give them to me, so I can get in reach with there when I arrive.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but that won't happen in LA, no club has a hired drummer. The way you get into a club is with a band, be it jazz, top40, RnB, fusion and akoustic.

if you are moving to LA, best of luck. get yourself out there and meet players, get into a band or 2.
If you are really good, go to the union and get into a rehearsal band.

Have you looked into all the necessary visa requirements for immigration? You will need a Social Security number to get a driver's license, and you will need a visa to get a social security number.

As for 'nightclubs hiring drummers', there is no such thing. I suggest you come to Los Angeles for a visit BEFORE you decide to just move here. As far as I can tell, you haven't done any research and you would be in for many surprises. The USA isn't a part of the European Union....you can't just move here and start working. The INS has many, many, many laws regarding immigration and working etc.

First of all - I have double citizenships (Swedish and American) so that won't be an issue. Half my family is American and I've been to the States a lot of times. We have relatives up in Moses Lake and Seattle.

Well I was just considering the options, 'cause here in Sweden some of the clubs managers in the big cities hire drummers for different occations. I guess they just doesn't work that way in the club environment in L.A city. Just checkin'..

I see that it might seem like I'm planning this out of plain stupidity. I'm moving there all by my own and without actually knowing anyone in the city, and therefore I will have to start from scratch. It might seem strange, but this is kind of the idea of it all. I know a couple of people in L.A, but the whole idea of doing it by myself is what I am after. I've accomplished big things here in Sweden, and from the people I play with here - moving to either L.A or N.Y are the two advises I always get. These are some of Sweden's biggest musicians.

I'm not worried about getting work sooner or later. I'm just checking the alternatives. The fact is that no matter how good of a drummer I am considered in Sweden, <u>no one</u> will know me over there if I'm not marketing myself at the right places. Where the right places are, is something I will just have to find out. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

I think one of the most important things that you forgot is that you are 17 - 18 years old... You have to be at lease 21 to get in most clubs in LA or any other metropolitan area in the USA. Good luck with your ambitions and your move to the states.

Usually, there is a 'house' band, and they play for about an hour. Then they take a break and people sign up to play with them for the second hour. You would just need to bring sticks (usually) and you would use the house-band drummer's drum set.

I'm not sure which clubs are currently doing this, but sometimes there's a jam at the Baked Potato, and there's one at Cozy's in Sherman Oaks too. There are usually 'blues' music types of jams.

Yeah, I know that it can be a little problem on some of the places, but a while back I checked all the clubs on the net at this site gathering them all - and most of seem to be 18.
I guess at most of the clubs, I'm just not going to be able to buy the drinks - and that's a big bummer, hehe [img]smile.gif[/img] !
