why join this board?

This is in response to a growing concern I have for the HOD board.

This message board has always been a great place to get info, get advice and share thoughts.

Recently, I've noticed people who join the board for, in my opinion, the wrong reasons.

So I'll ask to anyone, why join this board if you're not going to contribute? Is this just a place to get bootlegs for some people?

My thoughts are that this board is a place to learn. VC bootlegs are definately an ispiration, to say the least. But what I've realized recently is that a stack of VC bootlegs isn't going to make me a better drummer. I'm not even sure I've watched/listened to all of the ones I have. Practice and dedication/self determinism is what it takes to get better.

Hmmm. I dont really see where you're going with this. First off, the ONLY thing anyone wants to do on this board is make themselves better musicians; not just drummers, but listeners, appraisers, fans, etc. I think on this board we are a wee bit obsessed with Vinnie, granted, but we dont (or i dont) consider the process of watching a vinnie bootleg i dloaded off the interweb something thats going to be a real progression to my playing. Like you said, it's inspiration. And i dont think it's really anything significant. Personally, i think Vinnie is something special, but i think there are plenty of cats we can learn loads from too. But i think this board does have a broad range, it's just we choose to talk about a specific area. Most guys here (i'm kinda speculating here, correct me if i'm wrong) would probably have big record collections, with not just fusion, but with different stuff - prog, rock, country, pop, older stuff like motown and rocknroll etc. I think as drummers we've kinda whittled it down to that specific type of fusion that seems to be talked about quite a lot, and i dont think this is particularly a bad thing. And i dont think it's the reason people would join this board either, which, i think, is what you're trying to get at here. From what i've read, all new people (and anyway, what is this, a CS n00b slaughter FFS? lol) tend to just want an innocent chat about drums and stuff, and get their questions answered. I guess they've read the board and realised that we're all kinda obsessed with Vinnie to an extent, but that's not why they're here. I know when i came that wasn't my raison d'etre (or shouldn't that be raison de se joindre?), as it were. Of course, this is all from my own observations, and to be honest, i haven't really noticed this kind of behaviour too much...

But, in addition to the video clips, performance notices, etc., I too would like to see more discussion about technique, musicianship (all aspects), professionalism and GEAR! [img]tongue.gif[/img] JMHO.

I apologize for not being very clear. The problem I have is with people who only post to ask," Can someone get me <insert some bootleg here>?" or any post (their first few posts) that is derogatory toward others. Name calling, uncalled for insults, etc.

Question: What are the posting policies for HOD?

I don't want this board turning into something like (from what I've heard) the Pearl Drummer's forum.

Let's concentrate on keeping the topics free from insults, immature rederick, etc. That's all.

I know what you mean. It's not like it was a couple of years ago.
I like spirited discussions and debates, since we can get a different perspective on an issue than we've heard before. Understanding someone else's viewpoint has help shape my own. Unfortunately, I've noticed an increase of hostility between posters which serves to kill thoughtful discussions. Passion is one thing, hostility is another. After all, just because you disagree with someone, doesn't make them wrong. I've purposely stayed out of some threads just because of all the hostility. Who needs it? Besides, it's just juvenile. It's kind of telling that Steve had to write a little warning about these issues at the new Forum.

I think it's great that people share torrents, or transcriptions or Mp3's here, since they can be educational and inspiring. Hopefully, they won't take the place of respectful and intelligent threads about drumming, drummers and music. But, I suppose that's entirely up to us.

I'm not too concerned about it really. When you're dealing with people in numbers, over time it will evolve into something different than what it was. However I think as a result of the level of knowledge and maturity on here the standard has remained. Not to mention I don't really hesitate to ban someone if I think they may give someone else a reason to stop coming here (other than disagreeing with them).
Also if someone wants to join and only lurk, or ask for boots, I dont have a problem with that. I have a problem with someone that joins and straight away begins promoting themself or something theyre involved with. Considering 100 people have signed up for the new forum still in the test phase, and the fact that guys like Husband and Erskine post here I'm pretty happy with how things are. God knows who reads and hasn't signed up (ATTN LURKERS: SIGN UP AND CONTRIBUTE, YOU LACKEYS). [img]wink.gif[/img]
I appreciate anyone's concern, and as always if there's someone that you think is ruining it for others, just constact me or a Mod and we'll handle it.

Of course you are not concerned Steve. It is a forum. A forum, Dan, is a place where anyone can say anything, and people respond. If you do not admire a particular topic, then chose not to view it. You are in no position to judge a topic if that topic is helpful to others.

In my case about 70% of the topics are a waste of space. That's my opinion, so I will not even click on them. You can do the same. It does not mean those topics will not inspire and/or help someone else.

There is something here for every drummer. That is what makes thie the best drum forum on the net. Maybe others will learn from countless Vinnie bootlegs. If you do not, then it is not your concern. There are drummers in here who love to hear about Virgil Donati clinics over and over. There are some who admire those who can play the fastest. I may state my opinion every now and again, however if you're not a fan of those topics, then why read them?

Heated debates are fun and produce results. How boring is a forum where we all agree. Ahhh yes this one is God, and that one is amazing. Oh please friends. Opinions and heated debates are fun. I believe I'm the only member in this forum who actually caused Peter Erskine to be honest about jazz and playing superflous notes in jazz. He spoke from his heart when I spoke from mine. There is nothing wrong with this.

In other words, to each his own, and unless someone is utterly offensive, well......WHO CARES?

Well I joined this board for the free "HOD" coffee mug....as well as the wealth of knowledge that can be learned by reading,listening and watching the many different posts.....

However I have yet to recieve my mug?!?!
