There are people out there that are of the opinion that "freedom" means you can do whatever it is you want as long as you don't harm anyone else. While initially most people think they agree with this, a lot of them donn't really. They think you can do what you want but maybe guns scare them. So they think there should be restrictions on guns. Or maybe they think drugs should be illegal. Prostitution too. And of course people that make more money should help out those that don't make as much, so to ensure that they do, the government should take it from those people and spend it on programs to help other people.
It's on both sides of the political spectrum, left and right. Typically Republicans favor individual freedom on issues regarding money, but not on social issues and the Democrats are the opposite.
There's a minority of people that truly believe you should be free to do whatever you want with your own life and property. The only restriction being you don't harm anyone else's life or property. While they may have some of the same concerns about drugs, the poor, guns, etc they don't think force is ever the answer. And that's what government is: force. If you don't pay your taxes, if you do drugs and get caught, you can be sure that at some point a police officer with a gun will force you to do what they say. These people believe there are other voluntary ways of fixing our problems and that when you try to use force to fix them, it only makes the problems bigger.
The Free State Project is an effort to get 20,000 people that think like this to all move to NH and try and create a society of that sort there. The problem is, while they all agree on the type of society they want, they don't all agree on what the best way is to get there. Not to mention the people that already live there that don't neccesarily agree with their point of view.
So it makes for a very interesting story and raises some interesting political questions, but can be done in a narrative style rather than your typical Michael Moore type political film that just talks about the issues.

Do you have any timetable as far as completion; I guess what I'm asking is what phase of the making are you in right now? Because I'm a real nerd for this sort of thing; I guess you could say I get 'emotionally invested' in documentaries.
I'm very impressed that you've decided to do this without government grants/ funding. I don't know if this was to preserve the integrity of it but it does make it seem all the more on the level to me, not your typical "this is what I believe (or am paid to believe) and now I'm going to con you into swallowing it as fact" bullshit propaganda.
My donation is meager (because my pay is meager!) but I'm passing this site along to some people that not only would be interested but pull in much better coin than I.
That looks awesome. You definitley found a controversial and compelling issue to cover.

We're going to NH on Feb 11th to do some scouting but there's some events happening that we will film as part of the scouting. Some good stuff might come out of it that we could use, but we're not officially shooting until we've raised the budget to get all the goodies we want to really make it look good.Quote:

I won't take government grants for two reasons. One is on principle, I believe if the free market really wants this film, they will fund it. I also don't believe its the governments job to take other people's money from them by force and give it to me to make a movie. Its my job to raise.
The second reason is that government grants take forever to go through and they slap a bunch of restrictions of what you can and can't do with the money. It usually only comes in about $2,000 chunks, which totally isn't worth it. I'd rather raise my own funds through the help of good people like yourself and be free to operate however I need to. I appreciate you getting the word out for me! Also, if you contributed through the site, it hasn't sent me an email about it or registered on paypal. You might want to look into it to make sure nothing went wrong and your money didn't end up somewhere else.

Sorry, also forgot to mention the timetable. With docs its always somewhat uncertain b/c its not a controlled environment. But once we have the budget raised production should be done in no more than 6 months and post should be done in three.
It really shouldn't take that long, but we all work other jobs and this is something we're going the extra mile for, so it takes a little bit longer.
