This is just sort of a poll question! [img]smile.gif[/img]
I was wondering what you liked/found first, the American Girl books, or the American Girl dolls?
For example, I started reading the AG books long before I had an AG doll. The reason I liked the dolls was because they brought the books to life, but the books were my main interest to begin with. I was first introduced to the dolls by a friend--but didn't like her Samantha doll and couldn't understand her obsession with her. It wasn't until I read the AG books that I began to really like AG dolls.
I'm also wondering if others like me (who liked the books first) are the ones who have the most trouble with the changes AG makes to friend dolls, etc.

My daughter first found the books in her school library back in 1992. We had no idea that there were dolls or anything else involved till we had read several books and finally found a coupon in one that said we could send for a catalog. We sent it in wanting to know what other books Pleasant Company had, and were overjoyed to find when the catalog came that there were dolls and clothes for all the stories! [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Dolls.
In all honesty, I don't care for the stories. I have no desire to keep the books or read them.
BUT if those who like them like them...that's perfectly fine. [img]smile.gif[/img]
I just have NO intertest.

I think I saw a doll first- but didn't really know what it was- just that it was a beautiful doll. My 2nd cousin ("Aunt") had one from 1986, a signed Samantha. I first saw it in 1988.
I fell in love with the collection through the books, which I discovered in 1989 and read like mad. I got my first doll in 1990. But to me the books have been the main thing.

Books: My aunt bought the Felicity, Kirsten, Addy, Samantha and Molly books for me and my sister when I was little, and I have been hooked since! [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

Books, one of my students was reading them and that is how I started to read them. Then I had to enter AGPNY as a friend threatened me if I did not, lol! and as they say, it all went down in History.... [img]wink.gif[/img]

I saw the catalog first and fell in love with that; the whole concept, kit and kaboodle! But I didn't order anything for years. Then, I worked in a Waldenbooks in the early 90's and used to read the books to my dd. Eventually we bought her Molly and the rest is history!

One of the teachers at my daycare gave me a catalogue, but I read Samantha and Addy's books long before I got my first doll.
Samantha because I'd picked her, from the catalogue, as the one I liked most, and Addy, I think, because we were studying the Civil War. One can imagine I was quite happy that Samantha's stories were good, or I probably would have read all the other books before getting a doll. As it was, I read the other girls' books out then (Molly-Kirsten-Felicity) after I got my Samantha, but before I got any other doll.
Like Annie, it was largely the entire concept for me (and my mom, as I was only 9). There were these great, great books that were both fun and educational, but they had these gorgeous dolls and more educational items that accompanied them.
