If consolidation occurs in Wise Co. the new fields should be turf. I'm sure it would have to be privately funded though.

It was one of the Coal Companies, I can't for the life of me remember the name. Also from what I have heard, this same coal company funded for the same stuff to be put down on another field.
The company is Emats. There also funding the money to put field turf down at Richlands.
coeburn's field is looking better, now has bermuda
I love natural grass as much as the next guy, but this field turf is really good stuff. It's a huge investment initially, from what I hear, but pays for itself in maintenace costs, durability, and lost gates due to postponements. The stuff feels like you're running on air.
I still favor grass...and if it rains mud...that's how it was meant to be played...IMO nothing but lightning or a natural disaster should postpone a football game.

Never in my life have I heard a more truthful statement.
I agree that football should be played on grass. However, the reason Honaker decided to go with turf is that it reduces injuries and that is always a problem at smaller schools that don't usually have a lot to come out.
gimme a break. They "decided to" because it was a gift.
I don't see Appy, Pocy, Hurley or Phelps wanting turf because it reduces injuries/missed games.
The schools/boosters that actually buy it do so because it's durable.

I think that article illustrates my point about money and cancellations. I would also like to point out that most players and coaches would not want poor field conditions to play a factor in the outcome of their season. Yes, playing in rain and snow is part of the game. Playing on a sloppy football field shouldn't be. It is, unfortunately, a reality because of the great initial expense of the field turf.
