Virginia High 21 Chilhowie 7 (Varsity) 2 qtrs
Virginia High 6 Chilhowie 0 (JV) 1 qtr
Gate City 14 Chilhowie 0 (Varsity) 2 qtrs
Gate City 7 Chilhowie 0 (JV) 1 qtr
Virginia High and Powell Valley varsity tied 28-28 after 2 qtrs, great game, very entertaining to watch for preseason.
Each game varsity played 2 qtrs, JV played the last qtr. I left after VHS/PV game so someone else will have to fill us in on the last two games.
Chilhowie played very conservatively and substituted often, starters were lucky to play one qtr in each game. They are big but seem to lack speed and inexperience seemed to show. The Warriors will need to get it together or it might be a long season, maybe it helped them though.
VA High looked very good in my opinion. Thurman has already made a difference from what I saw tonight. The players were fired up and the spread offense was working well, passing and running well on CHS and PV. Bowers looked good throwing and running the ball and they seem to have some good athletes to pick from. Might make some noise this year.
I was impressed with Gate City's QB #15. Very speedy and accurate thrower. Chil couldn't seem to contain GC's speed. They ran the ball a lot but made good passes when needed.
PV and VHS couldn't stop each other. 56 total pts in 2 qtrs. Pinkston ran wild and picked apart VHS' secondary, that seemed to be VHS' biggest weakness, they got burned quite often. Pinkston is a stud and looked to have good backs and receivers. Offense looked really good but defense couldn't stop VHS. Both offenses looked really good though. Pinkston made an incredible run of about 25-30 yds for a TD on the last play of the qtr to tie VHS after a wild sequence of events. That one game was worth price of admission.
How does Virginia High look this year compared to last? And what does that say for Powell Valley when they couldn't put them away? Va. High has never been overly great in the past few years, have they? I'm wondering if the PV we saw last year is the same one we'll be getting this year. I hope they've made some improvements. Granted, this was just a jamboree and there's still lots left to see.
PV's defense seemed like it needed work.
PV looked great on "O" but their "D" was ify! There was a few times Virginia high had them stopped to 3rd and long and give up a big pass play. Over all PV looked pretty strong as long as Pinkston stays healthy; as for Virginia high, a complete flip flop of the last few years. QB looked great as did RB #20 Dock, and they have some athletes at wide out. The "O" line on looked pretty solid too. Their "D" was a little shady though; I think Thurman will be making some moves at a few positions and they might be a surprise how they do this season? Anyway it goes great game..... will enjoy watching both of them this season!
You know, now that you mention it I completely forgot that Gretna's coach has taken over at Va. High. I feel like a complete idiot having let that thought slip. Of course they're probably going to look better under his direction! I bet he has helped them out a lot. I wonder how they'll do throughout the season this year compared to the last few.
