Brrr... Bah Humbug... Bring on Global warming!
Here in northern Arkansas, it's been a long, cold winter. One 8" snow just disappeared, only to be replaced by another. I've gone through twice my normal firewood allotment.
Still, I know we've had it easy compared to many. Share your winter stories here, maybe it'll help cure some cabin fever. :coffeedrinker:
Can't compete with snow stories and very fortunate to have been mostly missed by the extensive ice, flooding damage around metro Atlanta, but the unseasonably cold, wet weather we've had combined with the furnace dying on the first night of the first cold snap has meant me being cooped up in a ~12 x 14 ft room for a goodly portion of four months now. Some days it's been down to 32 deg in house and peaked at only 38 deg today. I did score a nice electric throw for only $25 on Black Friday though, so I can at least be relatively comfortable listening to music or watching a movie on TV in the living room.
Another bummer is that heating at ~120 V has proven more expensive for one room than heating my entire house with natural gas even at the 'Robber Baron' rates we've been hit with since the deregulation that was touted as a selling point of being cheaper long term. Yeah, right!

JWe haven't have a snow storm since Dec 9Th. This is quite unusual for Montreal.
Look at the following picture of snow removal procedure. It takes 5 days to remove snow on every street and sidewalk in Montreal and suburbs.
The first picture shows snow being plowed to the side of the street followed by a snowblower and a dump truck.

We usually have an 18-24 inch dense base by now with more good loose snow on top. The NYC metro area depends on our heavy snow pack for it's spring run-off to fill the reservoirs that supply a good portion of the city's water. So far, there isn't anything to run off come the spring thaw. Folks in this area would probably do well to be concerned and conserve.
There however has been no shortage of cold weather, we actually saw a low of -18F here before the season officially started which was easily a record low.

Been great so far here!! I wasn't so sure what I would be in for having lived in Victoria, BC my whole life till last April.. In Victoria it's mostly a rainy winter, cold sometimes when the Arctic air drifts down off the Yukon or Alaska etc.. Here in Miramichi New Brunswick it can be more what people think of as a Canadian winter.. So far it's been lot's of sunny days, a few feet of snow ,and the worst so far was -28c with the wind chill.. Other than that I'll take cool, cold and sunny over months of rain anyday!!!! Me likes it!!
Growing up in Upstate NY where they get a LOT of snow...I understand that getting 8" of snow in the south is a LOT..I lived in Tennessee and North Carolina when I was in the Army for a while..When those area's get 6" of snow it's a complete mess. Cities like Syracuse and Rochester get 6" of snow every week...
My WORSE storm I was ever in...was when I was visiting my GF who lived in the Tug Hill Plateau area north of Syracuse. I visited her one thursday afternoon and needed to be back in Syracuse to work on saturday morning......Started snowing late thrusday...didn't stop until sunday morning...after a total of 90" fell. My F150 was parked in her driveway...and looking out Sunday afternoon...all I saw was snow...and a little bump where my truck was. Her town had over 600" of snow that year. Great place to visit in the summer...
This was my winter playground from the early 80's until the very late 1990's, it's about an hour and a half drive from here in "ideal" conditions. Now the trail system up there is very reminiscent of southern CA's 405 or PCH at rush hour, especially on the weekends. It's no longer fun or affordable to ride up there. Where we used to see maybe a dozen or so other sleds on a 4 hour ride, it's now not unusual to see 80 or 100 of them go by during a 10-15 minute trailside break.Quote:

FWIW, Mike isn't exaggerating in the least about Tug Hill snowfall. Just a breeze of frigid Canadian air out of the west/northwest blowing over Lake Ontario can bring lake effect snowfall at rates of up to 4 inches or more an hour for as long as the breeze lasts.
If you like the fluffy white powder deeper than you are tall, you might think Tug Hill was a little slice of heaven.
Sick of the white stuff here in Ohio as well.
