This is the best source for Altec parts and service as they are former Altec people and they have the stock of genuine parts and tooling for manufacture of replacement parts.
If you have an older Alnico magnet model 515, it should be remagged as part of the restoration to insure the magnet is 100%. GPA does this as part of their rebuild. Good luck with your restoration.

Thats odd....Bill [i[did[/i] have 515 kits...was quite proud that he made the phenolic spider too. Perhaps he sold out and it isn't worth keeping them up.
Image (Waldom) had the 515 cone...we probably still have one or two. They did not have the spider though...I've done a spider transplant for a customer that wanted to keep it authintic as possible. The dust dome is another issue...we use the EV 30W dome...which EV has now discontinued though we still have enough left to do some more recones.
Hello DaveH
I?ve called Bill from GPA, he doesen?t have 515 cones or Reconing kits with the paper surround and phenolic spider. Only the newer 515B kits.
Thanks, GST

Re: EV 30W
You mentioned you can recone a 30W? Is this oddball driver worth collecting other than to complete a Patrician? It seems like an incredible woofer, yet you don't seem to hear much on their use. Not many drivers have an Fs as low as a 30W.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I would not seek out a 30W. I bought one and built the EV cabinet from plans. (I can direct you to them if you want them). I was very unhappy with it. IMHO the transient response was terrible.Quote:

Low FS is not a be all and end all.
I an playing with some bass orns that have a usable response down to about 20 hz. This is significantly different from an Altec mid bass horn.
In the LF horn I am using drivers with an FS of about 40 hz. In the horn because of the loading that is cut in half. In the mid bass horn, you need a driver with a lower FS since it is a drect radiator below horn cutoff.
Horn loaded bass is much more dynamic than a huge diaphragm like the 30 W. YMMV
Hi Steve
Two weeks before I got a mail from Bill, he only sells 515B with textil surround. This would be not the first order from GPA, I?ve got last year
12 515B kits from GPA, Todd helped me with the order. Why should he give them not to me when he has them ? Can you give me please an adress or mail from Waldom where I can get them ? I do only need the cones, have the spiders and coils.
Thank you, GST
Old Guy, your conclusions on the EV-30 closely parallel those of others that tried it, popular concensus being that it makes a better support for a glass-topped coffee table than a LF driver.
Nope, we don't recone the 30W anymore (Telex/EV discontinued the recone parts) but we do have its domes still to deal with 515s. While not exactly the same it is so close that you won't notice on first glance. I bought a stack of them when they were available (and EV would sell any part of a recone kit).
We got pulled into doing EV recones when Altec was shut down since EVI required a recone facility to recone ALL of their drivers, regardless of badge.
The last EV 30W that I worked on...just needed a dome (was crushed) so it was fortunate that I had some. Personally, I don't care for the EV sound at all, woofers or compression drivers. Since the Telex take over of EV, I care for their service even less (though when it was run by EV, they were quite exceptional in service).

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">A 20Hz bass horn is an impressive item as a horn that low is usually huge and difficult to incorporate into most homes. Do you have to compensate for the delay with the rest of the system? Would sure like to see a pic of them. Thanks.Quote:
