dude, we did this not long ago with a beloved cat and then a very much loved member of our family, our dog. there is nothing that I can say that will make it easier, except time does seem to ease the pain as it goes along. Please accept my deepest sympothies and know that I am so sorry this has to happen to you. remember all the love and good times.

Tomorrow morning I am taking my dog in to be put to sleep.
She has a large tumor on her pancreas and probably has more throughout her body. My folks took her into to vet last Monday to determine the cause of her bloated stomach and her recent vomiting. They could have done it then but we decided to ease into a bit. They gave us steroids and some vitamins along with some pain killers for her if her conditioned worsened. She perked up a bit this last week with the steroids. She started eating a bit more moving around a little better as well......Unfortunately the Hurricane (Frances) came through this weekend and she has always had a problem with thunderstorms. For the last couple of years we have had to give her some very weak tranquilizers during loud storms (she has a bad valve in her heart and these would help to calm her down). This combined with her weakened conditioned seemed to give her a stroke yesterday. She now seems "lost" and her motor skills seem effected. Basic words she used to respond to she no longer seems to recognize....and she may not recognize my folks and I anymore either. It's hard to let go but we realize that she will only get much worse and we don't want her to suffer (though she seems pain less at the moment). I have had this dog (Smokey) for 13 years which is over half my life and I am not sure how bad I will feel when she is gone. She is the nicest animal (let alone dog) I have ever seen......not sure what else to put I just needed to vent this someplace......

The dog I had from when I was 3 to 17 had a stroke and we had to put him down.
oh God, sorry to hear that, bro.
My wife's cat (of 14 years) suddenly developed a clot in his femural artery which basically cut the circulation off to his hind quarters and we had no choice but to put him down immediately.
He was litteraly fine one minute... and then in terrible pain for two hours before we could get him to a vet...
It was the hardest decision... yet the easiest decision. We both loved him so much we didn't want to see him suffer. Money was not an issue. It was just time to let him go.
We stayed by his side when he got his injection and rubbed his fur until he went. It was very quick.
Out of respect for him, we had him properly cremated. He was family.
The people who don't have the type of emotions you are experiencing are the weird ones... just go with it.
Well we took her in this morning. It was fast and seemingly painless. What tears me up is knowing (or guessing) I will live for many more years and never see her again...
