If i'm not mistaken, this is the position 'recently' occupied by drummer Steve Fidyk...correction, make that the Army Blues Jazz Ensemble/Band, unless the two are considered one in the same.
Steve Gadd DID play kit during his Army band days.
I also thought it was true that Gadd did play set during the army days....

A friend of mine was stationed with Gadd during his Army Field Band days. According to him, Gadd only played the legit stuff at that time. (Though he may have been doing civilian gigs on the set).

Always wondered, whats the deal with these army bands in the US? Are these guys trained soldiers? Or just musicians?
I have seen video of Gadd IN the Army band playing set, there is another drummer and at times the 2 switch. But Gadd did indeed play set.
The only "just musician" military bandsmen are in the Marine Corpse Band in D.C. They don't (or at least they didn't when I was in) attend basic training (what a deal!).
All the rest of the military musicians in the Navy, Army, USMC, and Air Force, attend basic training, are qualified on weapons and chemical warfare etc. etc. However, their job description says musician. And that is their main gig in the military.
After I laid down some rudiments and sight read a bunch of marches for my audition (years ago). They had me sit in with "the band". I was picturing a marching band. Instead they took me into this room where they had a double kick drum set and some Marshall stacks. I said "what's this", they said this is our Navy rock band. "Cool!" My main gig in the Navy was to play in rock bands, jazz combos, big band jazz groups and the occasional military gig on snare. But the majority of the gig was all on the kit.
