OK!!!!!>That 1st clip was fuckin mental!!I still am a 'musical' detractor of Virgil.Only because ive never,ever heard him play soft;he's always the same dynamic level,and he is always in combos that allow him to flourish the way he does.I have had some serious thoughts about exposing him to my students.I want my students 2 adopt his discipline to the art,but i dont want them 2 think that is what drumming is all about,and i am very serious about this.I've read/seen/spoken to some formative drummers about Virgil;and it seems that he really scares some younger impressionable students,2 the point of giving up.Very similar 2 my reaction 2 Buddy and Vinnie at first glance.But on the flipside,he really is inspirational,and im glad he's on the scene.He gives back 2 the community,and i really admire that.He really shows what hard work is all about.Alas,2 what end??????...........beats..............P.S.Thx so much 4 posting that Shedder

...& that nice shot of the ceiling occurred when the guy filming reached down to pick his chin off his left shoe, so that he wouldn't 4get it & leave w/out it...i hear he's still tryin to Krazy-Glue it back on [try stapling]...havta hand it to him - pretty controlled ceiling shot despite the fact....
keeping up with a guy like donati is like trying to beat wayne gretzkies scoring records.
to beat gretzkies record you'd have to score 50 goals or more for 15 years ...
to surpass donati for all you youngsters who want to push the envolope further you'd have to practice 10 hours a day for 20 years straight to get there. good friggin luck....

beats - i hear what'cher sayin, bro, & i understand it...
the only thing i would say about Virg's "softness" capabilities [or otherwise] is that WITHIN the context of the stuff he plays, [from timt to time] i hear all kinds of dynamic levels...i know that this isnt prob exactly what u meant tho, but nevertheless...

A friend of mine was fortunate enough to get some footage of Planet X off the Moonbabies tour and he sent me some of it. WOW! I am still trying to get my head straight and pick my Jaw off the floor. The whole band was incredible but "GIVE ME A BREAK" is Donati NUTS or what!
The most amazing combination of hands and feet I have ever witnessed. The man's feet are absurd but his hands are just as great if not better. I think because his feet are so ridiculous it is easy to dwell on that but his dexterity, speed and independence with his hands and phrasing ability are astoundind. I have been fortunate to witness some great players over the years:Vinnie,Smith,Weckl,Phillips,Chambers,Bozzio, Minneman and Mangini recently among others but Donati to me is doing things that others are not.
His ability to superimpose(layer)multiple, very original and highly complex rhythm's and make it groove yet keep it very musical and do this in a band setting(not just soloing) is very uncanny. It is one thing to try and pull it off in a solo context but to apply it to a song and make it work is tremendous. And to play the interchanging foot patterns with the speed, complexity, fluidity and endurance that he does then solo over that with the hands in a very creative and complex manner is something I have never witnessed to that degree. Minneman and Mangini(Tremendous drummers themselves) are doing some outrageous things rhythmically also but Donati adds a deep sense of groove, feel and taste that sets him apart from them I believe "IMHO". Could go on but enough said. Always will be someone to up the level of performance.
