This weekend, Rudy-Ment gave me an idea. He asked me if a certain drummer was in my top 10 or 20 favorites.
That made me think... and I'd be curious to see who your top FIVE all-time drummers are! And why... (small comment). List Only FIVE !
HERE ARE MINE:

Vinnie Colaiuta -
(he does it all)
Kirk Covington -
(he is the most intense and real drummer I've seen.)
Joey Heredia -
(When it comes to Latin groove, he's the man)
Steve Gadd -
(The God of all drummers )
JoJo Mayer -
(One of the most talented drummers of the last ten years)

First off: I really can't make a list of top five. There's so many people to consider that make me smile whenever I hear them play. I'll think of something - might post later.
I would like to comment on Jojo Mayer though - How great that you included him! Since he's from my home town I'm especially happy. I only discovered him properly last year and ever since I try to get my hands on anything to do with him. He's a real inspiration to me and many others. In addition to this, I really get the impression that he is not getting the deserved recognition by others. Although many point him out as being a great player, he's still not up there with the greats. I'm assuming this will change once he starts playing with musicians of other instruments that are at high levels and well-respected in their field. Example: Weckl and Chick. You see what I mean?

1. Vinnie - slick phrasing and accents that are never done the same way twice
2. Dennis - solid groove and funkability
3. Tony - in a class all his own and free-flow of endless ideas
4. Gadd - "Drum God" covers it nicely. Always has the right approach for the tune. Nobody is the chameleon that Gadd is. I love the way he does something bare-bones that really drives the tune forward. Learning to leave space is an art form all it's own (the 'less is more' theory).
5. The last one is tough for me. I'm tempted to say TRILOK because I like his style. He didn't conform to a set of rules and really has his own thing going. Pending my mood, I would substitue the 5 spot to ERSKINE, WECKL, DEJOHNETTE or Stanton MOORE.

Steve God - Because he's the whole book on drumming. Groove and great chops, plus, everyone can copy steve gadd licks but who can copy vinnie? [img]tongue.gif[/img]
Harvey Mason - the first groove drummer I ever really heard, with the most articulate hands and greatest touch on the drums. Very delicate and precise playing, sensitive to the music, never a basher. There was a time I would listen to harvey and think it was gadd and vice versa, very similar in many ways.
Dave the Weckl - Because I'm a sucker for listening to clinically tight chops, yet with groove intact, plus, I love the music he produces. It sums up modern fusion for me that isn't too off the wall and too cerebral, yet still lovely and complex.
Buddy Rich - because I grew up listening to him, was always amazed at what he was able to play, and he influenced so many drummers of today.
Billham Cobly - because he's a true pioneer in ambidexterity, plus he was a major pioneer in the future of fusion drumming as we know it today.

I remember seeing JoJo sitting next to Steve Smith at NAMM years ago and had NO IDEA who he was. I knew he had to be someone to be signing stuff at the same booth.
I do think popularity does follow major gigs--Dave w/Chick; Smith w/Journey, etc. The session guys (Gadd, Jeff) have left such a large imprint on record it's easy to identify with many of their recordings.
I love seeing guys who put Vinnie & Mel Gaynor on their top list. [img]wink.gif[/img]

vinnie - does everything better than anyone(especially after hearing 'megadeth' recording)
omar - so damn fluid, a certain beauty and 'humaness' to his playing. where the hell has he been?
bohnam - the sexiest, deepest of hard rock groovers. a 'sound' all his own.
buddy - just plain awesome!
dave weckl - groove, chops, lot's of creativity.
neil peart - (permanent waves and moving pictures)probably listened to those two albums 1000 times each. beautiful recordings of drum tracks. i think all the planets 'aligned' for that band on those 2 records. i still love hearing tracks from these 2 albums on the radio over 20 yrs later!
