I have a question on You guys. Why do You think Dom Famularo changed his nice traditional grip to matched grip? He played great with traditional and his open handed playing now is just average...

oh my goodness... this guy needs to go back to traditional! he was so much better. i never knew he played like that. his open handed match playing sounds like crap compared to this. GO BACK!

The guy had courage enough to change
to matched and open-handed playing
after YEARS AND YEARS.
Give him some time as it takes time
to achieve any goal one has. He's
changed his outlook. There's nothing
wrong with that plus that fact that
it takes balls to try it.

I was at a clinic with Dom last year... he himself says that it's a work in progress but that he sees the improvement gradually. It takes a lot of courage for someone to follow their beliefs like that! I think he decided to change quite abruptly and simply stopped using traditional. I'm sure that what he is going for will be great....

Again, tradG & MG can both be brought to amazing levels by a dedicated player. EITHER grip.
So naturally, if a guy who's learned one from Day 1 switches many yrs later, it's going to take a lot of time to acclamate.
It would seem, by looking at it both logically & physiologically, that MG-OH [open handed] would be the definitive mechanics for the new age.
But that doesn't mean that a cat can't be JUST as great playing TG-CH [crossover-handed].
To me, it's a moot discussion. Any grip can be made to deal carnage upon the instrument... [img]wink.gif[/img]
I have no interest WHATSOEVER in changing my [now] MG-CH technique, because at this stage in the game, it would be a complete waste of time, when I could mastering new concepts & approaches with an already consummated technique. I'll learn them much quicker, & to the same effect as someone who's changed, only faster.
Besides, basically, I've now long been questionable of things that are labeled or deemed "traditional"...if one looks at it from the concept of all things have come from some sort of "building-blocks" or foundation over the years as being "traditional," then fine. But things that have always been "called 'traditional'" does not necessarily make them "the best" possible solution. I'm always naturally questionable of "tradition" anyway, basically...just because our "ancestors have always been doing it THIS certain way for all these years," doesn't make it emphatically & ultimately so [unless it's indeed morally or ethically time tested & true.] But now I'm talking about "trad" as a concept, as a whole.
A freind of mine used to call ideas like this "fallacies"...traditon can be sometimes distorted in the same way as the flawed theory of "mob rules"...just because more people say it IS than not, doesn't always make it rightly so. And similarly, just because a lot of folks have said it coonsistently for a number of chronological years...sort of like, "would you follow a role model over a cliff if he went?" [only not NEARLY as extreme [img]wink.gif[/img] ]. OK, Layman's Psych 101 class is officially over, now. :cp
These things should always be allowed to be held up to the great time-test of scrutiny.
And by that time, I will not have wasted time nor worried about "changing over" to befit someone else's idea of "what should be" [img]wink.gif[/img] [unless it DEF helps my technique to an extreme advantage over another method.] However, to me this only applies to grip within it's own confines - if you play TG, MG, OH, or CH, then so be it...
[Naturally I'm not referring to a situation like Pete C's, where a monumental life occurence took place & was overcome, because change in this instance was necessary & vital.]
But if someone like Dom...or say, VC, Weckl, or Virg want to change technique at this stage in their games, because they think it's the right thing to do, or theyre just plain bored of mastering the instrument to the n'th degree like they have, or whatever, then so be it - let 'em. I have no qualms wit dat. [img]cool.gif[/img]
