The word "angel" means messenger in greek and that, ergo , is a translation of the Hebrew word malakim: messenger. If an angel is Godly and has not fallen it will have approximately three functions: 1.) to be a messenger for God 2.) to serve as gaurdians and protecters 3.)to deliver punishments(i.e. Angel of Death).
A group of angels is called a choir. Here are the nine choirs of angels divided into three hierarchies :
FIRST HIERARCHY:
Seraphim: The highest order or choir of angels. Seraphims are attendants or guardians
before God's throne(existing in the realm closest to God). They are the angels of the
purest love, giving off light so intense that not even other divine beings may look
upon them. This is because they dwell closest to God who's presence is like a blazing fire. These celestial beings are said to surround the throne of God, singing music.
Seraphim have six wings, two cover their faces, two cover their
feet, and two are for flying. Rulers of the Seraphim are Seraphiel, Jahoel, Metatron,
and Michael.
Cherubim: Are associated with intellect. They are the voices of divine wisdom, sharing enlightenment and possessing a deep insight into God's secrets. Cherubim are the second highest in the nine hierarchies. The Bible describes Cherubim as powerful, majestic, angelic creatures who surround God's throne . Cherubim are guardians of God's glory. Cherubim have an intimate knowledge of God and
continually praise Him. Chiefs of the Cherubim are Ophaniel, Rikbiel, Cherubiel,
Raphael, and Gabriel.
Thrones : are the angels of peace and submisssion. Also known as Ophanum, they serve the purpose of being God's chariot. Described as great wheels in the middle of wheels, they were described in Ezekiel 1:13-19 as having four wings and four faces. They sparkled like the color of burnished brass. They had the hands of a man under their wings. Their wings were joined one to the other and they did not turn when they traveled - they all went straight forward.
They had four faces. They had the face of a man as well as three other faces on their
helmets - that of a lion, an ox, and an eagle. They moved on wheels in the middle
of wheels, blue-green in color. Above their heads "the likeness of the firmament,
"which was the color of crystal, and under this were their wings, two on each side of
their bodies. The noise of their wings was "like the noise of great waters."
SECOND HIERARCHY:
Dominions : Also known as Dominations,Rulers, and Hashmallim, lead the second hierarchy. It is thought that they regulate the duties of the angels and
rule over lesser angels to carry out commands of Omnipotent Spirit, making known the commands of God. Divine bureaucrats, they also serve to integrate the spiritual and the material worlds. They do not have much if any direct contact with humans(only God),but their work does effect us greatly. Dominions have been described as wearing long
albs, or gowns reaching to their feet, hitched with a golden belt and adorned with a
green sole. They carry golden staffs in the right hand and the Seal of God in the
left. Other times, they are said to hold an orb or a scepter.
Virtues: govern all of nature. They oversee the Seasons, stars, moon, and sun.
They are also in also known as as Malakim and the Tarshishim and are in charge of
miracles and provide courage, and valor. They also bestow grace and are particularly
involved with people struggling with their faith. Known as "the brilliant shining
ones". Generally, virtues are depicted as a group and are able to beam out massive
levels of divine energy. The two angels at the Ascension of Jesus were traditionally
believed to be from the Order of Virtues.
Powers: They protect souls and maintain the border between the spiritual and the
material. The angels of birth and death are in this category. It is believed that at
death, the Powers guided our transition to Heaven. It is thought that they fight against evil spirits who
attempt to cause chaos through human beings. They protect our souls from these evil
beings and act as ministers of God who avenge evil in the world and are the major
line of defense and battle during heavenly warfare. The chief is said to be either
Samael or Camael, both angels of darkness.
THIRD HIERARCHY:
Principalities or Princes, in the New Testament Principalities refers to one
type of spiritual(metaphysical) being, some of which are now quite hostile to God
and human beings. They guard countries and world leaders and are in charge of making announcements to humankind. They govern souls
and bodies, and manage duties of angels. They have been described as being dressed
in soldier's uniforms with golden girdles.
Along with the principalities are the powers . *The clarity of the New
Testament witness helps see that these beings were created through Christ and for
Him . Given their hostility to God and humans due to sin, Christ's
ultimate rule over them expresses the reign of the Lord over all in the cosmos.
This is the Lordship of Christ, which reveals God's tremendous salvation in
conquering sin and death at the cross, and now takes place in the Church.
Archangels: are chiefs or leading angels , they are the most frequently mentioned angel in the Bible. They may be this or of other hierarchies as is St. Michael the Archangel, who is a princely Seraph. So, too, the word archangel is often used as a generic term to refer to all the high orders of heavenly beings, although they are in fact but one of the higher orders. The Archangels have a unique role as God's messenger to the people at critical times in history and salvation
St. Michael has been a protector of the Church and the faithful from the time of the Apostles. He is the most significant angel; the patron saint of disease, soldiers, police officers, and exorcists and his name
translates into "One Who is Like God" It is Michael that leads the angels of God
into battle during the first war in Heaven (kicked Satan's ass). He is described
as Prince of the Seraphim, the "chief of princes" and as the leader of the forces
of heaven in their triumph over Satan and his followers. The angel Gabriel first appeared in the Old Testament in the prophesies of Daniel, he announced the prophecy of 70 weeks . He appeared to Zechariah to announce the birth of St. John the Baptist . It was also Gabriel which
proclaimed the Annunciation of Mary to be the mother of Jesus Christ. and
Daniel to reveal the future events to him Zacharias regarding the birth of John the Baptist . His name means "the mighty one."
The angel Raphael first appeared in the book of Tobit. He helped to heal the
world from the ravages of the fallen angels . He announces "I am the Angel Raphael, one of the seven who stand before the throne of God." The name Raphael means God Heals. He is the patron saint of doctors,
and travelers.
Uriel is seen as the angel of salvation and is associated with being a guardian
of the abyss. He doesn't really appear in the bible although he makes several
appearances in the book of Enoch. Uriel means fire of God.
Angels: or "gaurdian angels" deliver the prayers to God and God's answers and
other messages to humans. known in Hebrew as mal'akh (messengers), in Persian as
angaros (courier), and Greek as angelos (messenger)and are considered to be closest
to the material world and human begins. The most talked of kind of angel is the
gaurdian angel. It is believed that each person has at least one.
Fallen Angels: Satan used to be an angel. He was the covering cherub for God's
throne. His name was Lucifer(Light Bearer/Son of the Morning Star). After he
became fallen his name became Satan, which means accuser or adversary. He became
arrogant;he felt that since angels had a holy nature they should be able to dictate
their own will-be like God: Lucifer led astray one-third of the angels in Heaven. Yes,contrary to popular belief angels can sin.Lucifer coveted Christ's position. There was a war in Heaven against the holy angels and the fallen angels; Satan wants to decieve us for revenge with false
religions: and false miracles:
Beware of Satan who leads the world astray and his false light. "
