Just some thoughts from you guys out there I currently play a USA mapel Gretsch but I keep hearing about all these boutique hand made small companies. Would I be wise to get rid of my Gretsch and get one of these? If so what should I get? I did some research on eimes drums but aren't they just kehller shells? What does it mean? What should I do? HElp comphuta!
Are you unhappy with your
Gretsch kit's sound?
Have you tried different
heads? Sometimes, this
can make the difference.
I'm one of those guys
that thinks it's all in
the heads and tuning.
What do you think?

Eames are all birch shells made in Saugus MA. They are wonderful, and affordable.
Keller shells are mostly rock maple and yes, alot of small companies use them.

I like my Gretsch but alot of people are using Gretsch lately and I guess I just want something that stands out because as you'll see with alot of my posts I'm a standout kind of guy.

If you really want to stand out get some old Fibes and a set of roto-toms.

Really, if they really
bother you, get them
recovered. Don't throw
away good money on drums
if it's unnecessary.
There's a great company
in upstate NY that re-
covers and they do a
great, great job. I
forget the name, though.
Stand out in your playing,
not in the look of your
drums and spend that money
on good cymbals, hardware
and heads.
That's my view.

I agree, it's all about the tuning. Also your snare and cymbals are the main things to really express your voice. Alot of times to save time I'll have to use a low end kit that was provided for a gig. When that happens I'll usually just tune them a little, put on my own cymbals and snare, and go for it. If your kit is comfortable to sit behind, it's right for you.

Perhaps you meant the Fibes?
All drums cost big money, in
my book. It's not like it
used to be and I feel bad for
youngsters that have to "beg,
borrow and steal" to get
them. Usually, it's some
benevolent parent (mother,
likely) that forks the cash.
Unfortunately, it's not going
to change. Let's remember,
however, that we are about
our skill and sensitivity
and not our kits.
Last I saw, Vinnie was on
a Gretsch kit. "It don't
look so bad to me."

Actually Peter I meant any kit in general when I said "it's all in the tuning." I'v played Tama Rockstars that sounded worse than a CB. It's the tuning and the player.
