I enjoyed the clip. Very nice phrasing, and a good overall drum sound! I'd like to know:
1. What mics did you use?
2. Drum/Cymbal config?
3. What kind of camera did you use to record? External mic on the camera?
4. What program(s) did you use to get it onto the web?
5. Did you send the board mix into the camera as audio?
Thanks for the great playing, looking forward to purchasing the DVD!

This thread MIGHT violate the ONE thread per topic law...but the solo is worhty of a seperate thread.
I couldn't help but notice the contrast in sound from the Altered tune, "Sinister" and the new solo posted, especially the snare. It really demonstrates how significant a sweet sounding kit is to producing an overall product.
"Form & Function" thing I guess. I love some nice fusion playing from the 80's, but the sound on those records are so dead, it impacts my experience...I can get past the sound to the notes and music, but it doesn't hit me like the sound on Vinnie's solo effort, especially, "Attack of the 20lb Pizza."
I do lean towards Weckl's desire for control live. Seeing Virgil with both Planet X and Freakhouse live, I am amazed at how differnt his kit can sound due to some sound guy.
Very humbling knowing someone can flip a switch or tweak a knob and reduce all your practice and playing efforts down to a mere reflection of mediocrity when you're playing yer arse off up front on stage! [img]eek.gif[/img]
Next time you tune into SNL, ask yourself, "Can you hear Shawn Pelton's hats or ride?" He was playing some great stuff last week on the season closer and he was playing a fast shuffle on the hats and all I heard was snare downbeat and SAW some beautifully arched sticks going boom, boom, boom on the hats. 98% of the viewing audience isn't going to notice this, but some sound guy controlled this and whacked out the high sounds from the mix.
Same thing happened at NAMM this year at the Greg Bissonette demo with Roland. They spent so much time on a beautiful display with almost no effort spent on actual drum sound quality for the new V-Kit. The set sounded like poor quality tomato cans. SAD!

While we're on the subject, I have to agree that the sound quality is really good on this clip. The drums and cymbals sound really crisp... oh, and your playings not too shabby either Steve! [img]wink.gif[/img]
By the way, on a different note, who did you study with for hand technique?

Can't tell you the mic setup, sorry. I can point you to the web site of the studio.
Drums are Recording Custom from the late 80's. 24" kick, 10", 12", and 15" toms. Went with Remo clear Emporers this time around. I'm glad I did.
Ahhh...the snare. That snare realy inspired me during the session. I borrowed it from Sam Watson, it's a DUNNET. Titanium shell, and Sam had wood hoops put on the interior of the drum. SUH. WEET.
Cymbals are Zildjian. 16 and 17 'A' custom Projection crashes. 20 K custrom DRY LIGHT ride. 19 K China Brilliant. 13 (MID 1980's) new beat hats.
As far as the video, it was shot on a Sony TRV-33 mini DV in 16:9 widescreen. Captured to PC via Firewire (perfect digital transfer) using Adobe Premiere. The audio from the camera was ditched and replaced with a WAV ripped from a CD of the solo, given to me that day by the engineer (from the board obviously). Export as AVI, re-encode as Windows Media. Upload.

we wanna know how you got those hands.
The foundation of my hands was created in high school marching band. We were very competative and about as close to a drum corps as you could get without actually being one. There were guys in the line that really had their hands together so I had to catch up quick. So I had three months to get a clean double-stroke roll together. I did.
That followed by 3 more years of rehearsals, band competitions, football games and parades and you've got a lot of time spent playing rudiments.
I'm still not happy with my technique. I'm very much burying the sticks into the drums, not getting much rebound really. Sometimes I dont like the angle my right hand is at a lot, it's more fingers down instead of palm down. I'm not TOO concerned about it because , well..it works.

Great job! Very smooth and polished playing...clean, but not at the expense of making music. The head change to Emperors totally works in this context. And that snare IS nice!
