spiderman

hmmmm.... i recently watched this movie for
the very first time. i tried to find the
older thread about this movie -- i thought
it was on reved's board -- but i can't find
it... so i'm just gonna say a few things.


not a bad movie, imo... though it did lack
a few 'real' spiderman information.... but
it was a movie... not a comic run.

this movie had a bunch of plots... and sub-plots
(his beginning, his nemesis, his love interest,
her issues, his school issues, blah blah blah)
that i figured would become too entangled
to follow loosely... but i was wrong.. it
wrapped up somewhat ok.

i did feel a little bit embarrassed about
the green goblin... especially since i felt
i was watching some power rangers show...
but it was ok.

i think the special effects coulda been
cleaned up a bit more... making it a bit more
believable... (if you can believe shit like that).

i felt the movie showed some compassion toward
norman osborn in that he was really just
insane... making it come full circle --
'genius' scientist falls victim to his own
greed... blah blah blah...

i was impressed with the 'osborn soliloquy'
(where norman is 'talking to the goblin')
and watching *moreso* the actor completing
an acting cue.

i did notice alot of god references... but
not as detailed or as heavy as in SIGNS...
which is always a plus.

i felt 'MJ' was also *subliminally* a self-fulfilling
prophecy... in that she was basically
looked down upon (in a tramp-like fashion)
and yet, in the end... went from guy to guy
to guy like she was swinging on a vine.

i also liked the ending... which opens the
door for a sequel... but not in the way
that its obvious (like in MATRIX: RELOADED).

if there is a sequel... surely they won't
be as detailed showing harry becoming the
green goblin (because thats lame)....

i think if they make the sequel (with harry)
they should leave it as somewhat of a mystery,
in which you aren't really sure if norman
returns.... only to find out that its really
harry... *shrugs*

but i don't write scripts.

i think marvel has some good competition
on DC (with spiderman)... but its lame
attempts at movies (such as XMEN and HULK)
will only make matters worse.

still, my contention (and bias) are as follows:
(these are naturally for the first of the series)

#1 -- superman
#2 -- batman
#3 -- spiderman

#500 -- the crow

#1000 -- xmen

#1500 -- daredevil
.

anyone notice the DC remarks (as well as other

You mean Auntie Mae in the hospital saying "...you're not Superman." yep.

And I don't think the Spiderman thread was on my board.

Spiderman was a nice movie! yeah!
But i think batman should be on #1, not superman.
The whole batman movie had so much more atmosphere.
Then again, considered from a purely comic-to-big screen point of view i couldn't say which one would have to be on top.

yeah... she mentions superman... but then there
is a scene in which he is running and he tears
open his shirt to reveal his spider emblem... [img]tongue.gif[/img]
and when he is learning how to use his web-shooters,
he says 'up up and away' .... lol!

there is also LOADS of marvel tidbits within the
movie... like in the wrestling scenes...
there are various other marvel characters in the
audience... including the fantastic four...
and when the cage comes down over the ring,
spiderman says 'i'm not the thing!' (fantastic
four reference).

also... the guy trying to beat bonesaw prior to
spiderman is named 'the flying dutchman'...
which was a nemesis to the silver surfer... and
a nemesis overall to some marvel characters.

also... in the scene when mr jamison is wanting
pics of spiderman, some guy mentions 'eddie'...
which could be a notation of one of spiderman's
other rivals (venom)....

AND AND... peter parker mentions getting fired
by dr. conners... which later will end up being
another spiderman nemesis -- the lizard.

lots of possible sequels awaiting....

What's the scale? Lets say 1 - 10,000. Forget that 1 million for THE HULK Shatzy gave.

DARKMAN (a comic book superhero without a comic book history) also by Sam Raimi ---- I'd put this above BATMAN. Sure, BATMAN has heavy continuous dark gothic atmosphere, almost everything happens at night, but the franchise is getting ridiculous. Definitely not #2, maybe #80.

SWAMP THING ---- I'd put this around the #2000-range, though the campiness was enjoyed.

UNBREAKABLE (a comic book Superhero Origin, also without a comic book history) ---- Was a really good origin, dealing with his own problems & self-discovery, never touching the flashy spandex masked-crusader cliche. #20.

THE PHANTOM ---- I can barely remember the storyline anymore. This one hits the dregs. ---- #4000.

THE CROW was much better than SPAWN, but the plot was almost exactly the same in each. (Never saw the second CROW movie, so won't give the short-lived franchise a number) ----

THE ROCKETEER was pretty good, though his only superpower was that technologically advanced jetpack burning his ass. Don't believe he had all that horrible of a nemesis either, so ---- around the #2000 range with SWAMP THING.

HAHAHAA! I wasn't into Marvel or DC superhero comics as a child, so missed all those references you mentioned. I was into the 60's - 70's underground/independent comics (Slow Death, ZAP!, Junkwaffle, Fantagor, Bizarre Sex, Fabulous Furry Freak Bros., etc.)

I'd like to see GRENDEL; WAR CHILD made into an epic movie. (Would probably need the length of LOTR's 3-hour-episode trilogy to get the story across coherently though)

i had remembered DARKMAN just after i posted the
list... but honestly, i didn't care for it...
or any of those on the list all that much.

i suppose that my top 3 was just some over-simplified
way of stating how those movies matched up
against each other.

i don't remember if i have seen anything past
the first CROW movie... though it seems to
suggest that i have (i'm not sure).

ok ok... sure... most all of the movies on
the (my) list are overly commerical and lame...
*ding*....

i suppose had i really wanted to get technical
i would have put GHOST IN A SHELL up at number
one... since it was manga originally... and in
comparison to the others... it was much more
creative.

Manga crossovers would have to be a totally different category! Almost EVERYTHING that's been released as Japanimation or live-action Japanese motion-pictures came out earlier as a Manga title.
