Anthony Jackson

I just wanted to say how happy I am to be hearing about all of this cool stuff Anthony has been up to. He has been my favorite bass player for years now and to hear him in these new settings will be really exciting! For those interested, there are some awesome Anthony moments on that DVD Lee Ritenour Live at the Coconut Grove. Harvey Mason is on it as well. Anthony just shines throughout. His sound and groove are unmistakable. Also he is stellar on Steve Khan's public access album w/ Weckl. Found this one on cassette in a freakin' dollar store!!! If anyone has seen him play with Wayne Krantz's band lately please let me know!! Peace

PS, Derek, did you march Devils in '95? I was in Cadets that year!

Yeah that guy is such a monster it's ridiculous. The Michel Camilo stuff, and the Steve Khan CD you mentioned...he's one of my favorite bass players.

Hi Terry, no I was in the 93 and 94 lines. 95 was my age out but I decided to stop after 94. We had a great time with Cadets in 94 though; many hangs and joint functions. Great guys and great players.

Anthony is an amazing player and quite a character, too. (You know he doesn't pop or slap, right?)I've seen him play live several times and of course he's great on everything- especially the Michel Camilo stuff. I saw him play with Wayne Krantz and Cliff Almond a few months back- also seen him with Steve Gadd and Michel Petrucciani. As much as I love Steve and Cliff, I spent most of my time paying attention to what Anthony was doing...

Arg! I want to hear that band!! Someone mini disc it for the Love of all that is wholesome!

Amen to that, Steve! Have you guys heard the Michel Camilo big band cd "on the other hand" (I think) with Anthony and Cliff? I have to say as far as contemporary Latin big band stuff, this one is superb. They went and found like the best players EVER and recorded big arrangements of all of the coolest Michel stuff. Highly recommend this one. Dude I am gonna have to come to New York I guess to see Anthony in action. He doen't seem to come through Chicago much if at all. The guy is a real trip to watch. So focused! I also really love the old Chaka Khan stuff like Naughty for instance. He is perfect on that one. I heard he took like 2 months in the studio (probably extremely expensive time!) to perfect his performance. Certainly one of his best! I also saw a recent picture and it seems he lost a ton of weight. Well hopefully he is feeling his best so we can hear him for a long time to come!!

PS. Derek! You probably know Roger Carter then. That dude is a beast. Great line in 94! I remember you guys plaing Ditty for the first time and thinking holy s@#t!! I played quads in 95. Although I wish we had that crazy feature Cadets 94 had! Anyhoo, always cool to hear about another drum corps guy that survived in the business. I need to ask you about any technique adjustments you may have made to "adapt" to the drumset. Also feel adjustments. (as far as groove) Whew! I need to lighten up on the coffee! Later Guys!!

Anthony Jackson defines Bass!

I've seen him play live twice, once in France with Michel Camilo & Heracio on drums, very nice concert.

The first time I saw him live though was an expirience! It was the summer of 1991 and I was attending the Drummers Collective in New York. One of the major music stores was putting on a drum clinic with Dennis Chambers that also featured Eye Wittness!
The event was held at S.I.R.
Chambers, came out and did the first half of the clinic by himself, then was joined by Steve Khan & Anthony Jackson. The event was attended by many people including many "name drummers" & Chaka Khan (who I stood next to ;-))
Dennis played great and everybody was enjoing his performance. He had the spotlight until Anthony had an 8 bar solo (only 8 bars) and blew away everybody in attendance including Dennis & Steve K. It was the highlight for everyone. His 8 bars said more than most musicians careers!
If you ever have the chance to see this guy play don't miss it!

Oh, and since you asked...

Anthony sounded awesome with Wayne Krantz and Cliff Almond. Wayne's thing is 90% improv(more so since the LTBL CD), the trio plays off of each other- Anthony was just killing it. You know he's got huge ears, impeccable rhythm, great taste...trust me, I nod off when I hear jam bands- but Wayne takes it to another level...it keeps you on the edge of your seat.

Anthony and Cliff are friends and have a long history of playing together and you can hear it. Great chemistry.
