anybody know if the yamaha yess mounts are really worth it or to just use rims mounts. i got an older yamaha maple custom with no yess mounts and wonder if either one of these would improve sound on my kit.

I don't think drilling more holes into the drum to use the YESS system would help, so I would try RIMS.
I installed RIMS on a Ludwig kit and the only difference I could discern was my billfold was $40 lighter. No doubt some will disagree however I believe the sonic impact is so slight you'd have to be able to hear better than a dog to notice. RIMS type mounts invariably touch more points on a tom than a good old fashioned mount. There are wiser investments to make: like new sticks and heads.
And DW mounts have got to be for looks only.
I'm surprised at your results 5/8! I've never heard anybody say that.
For the original question, you could also look at Pearl Optimounts or clips. I know most people don't like the ISS system, but I think they're pretty good.
I have some older (15 yrs) Yamaha recording drums without YESS and they have NO problem with tone and sustain. Do your drums sound choked?

I have the optimounts on one of my kits and they work great..I just don't particularly care for the Pearl tom arms.. [img]graemlins/thumbs_down.gif[/img] I'm a big fan of the Tama Starcast mounting system...I also have my ol' faithful Recording Customs without Yess mounts and they sound incredible. Who knows? Drums are strange sometimes. The room has a lot to do with how they sound and feel. The worst part is playing them at one venue and having them kill and then playing the next night in a different room and all of the sudden the 12 is choking.
There are two schools of thought on this question. To me it's superfluous hardware but on new drums it's standard equipment, so the consumer might as well go with it. I wouldn't go out and buy new RIMS type mounts for old drums that don't have them because I did and Fido might've heard the difference, but Five didn't. Whereas I'm all for not hanging your stickbag on your floor tom I believe in all honesty that these mounts are about as useful as hood ornaments or curb-feelers on a car.
I see where you are coming from 5/8. I build drums and I just like the idea of nothing going into the shell. Also,I like the least amount of hardware mass..lugs,etc...Now that I think of it,I'm lazy.....
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">so you had to drill i guess to get those yess mounts on right? someone told me you could use the existing holes for the yess mounts too, but i dont know about that!! im real pleased with the sound now and thinking these drums were made to be how they are...thanks for the info though!!! by the way record customs are great, been thinkin bout gettin a rec.custom just becuase i grew up wanting one..maybe some day!!Quote:

If you're switching from something like the lower end Pearl "pipe-in-the-shell" type of mount to a RIMS set-up, you'll potentially notice a huge difference in the tom going from choked to resonant. If you're going from pre-YESS or YESS to RIMS, I doubt that you'll hear a significant change. However, the proof is in actually listening to the different set-ups.
