Okay, this maybe is a really old questions but it's occured to me that after 2000, Mcfarlane has now made entirely plastic packaging instead of the old-fasioned carboard back. What happened?

I don't know, but I preferred the old style, m'self.
I'm guessing cost or convience is why they would switch to the clamshells. hell who knows. maybe steve or dave can answer your question.
Hell who cares, I open most of them anyway and the clamshells keep the nts stronger for longer amount of time.
are you a new collector? why dont you tell us something about yourself since we dont know you. how old are you? what you collect etc

advancements in technology, cheaper pricing, and less damage to product
If I remember it's pretty simple. The clamshells can withstand the wear and tear of shipping and being on the shelves better than the old style.
I prefer the clamshells! ANd yeah, it's a durability thing. Especially if you keep them MOC - no loger do you have to worry about the plastic popping or peeling off the cardboard due to age/old glue, etc.
Way better to hang from the walls too.
Plus, when you do open them, it holds in that new toy smell better, and still packs the good punch and gets you that buzz.
I prefer the clamshells myself because I store my current "not on display" figures in their own packaging. Much easier to pack up!
I was just wondering about this, this morning-
sorta.....
How long 'till we see series 2 & up blisters start to separate from the cardboard back?
And what to we do about it when it starts?
Hot glue?
duct tape.
Good question about the separation. It's been what, ten years now and so far so good. I think there were some pretty spirited arguments when they made the change to clamshells.
I'm a fan of both versions. I've gotten used to the clean look of the clamshell and it's durability. But I sure do love the 'classic' look of the old cardboard backed figs. Especially the 'lightning' back cards. I just love those.
