Vinnie on metric modulation

While shuffling through old drum mags, I fell on an article that I had'nt really noticed at the time since this stuff was over my head.
It's an article on metric modulation written by Vinnie himself in 1987 in the long gone "Percussioner International" magazine.
I don?t know if it's the only article that Vinnie ever wrote but it must be one of the very few.
So for your pleasure, here's "Superimposed Metric Modulation" by the master himself.

It's the one with a shot from his L side; a moustachioed & mulleted VC, wearing those loose red pants & a black-w-white letters Zildjian T-shirt, wailing on a red kit with black tubular rack, is it not? - A face kind of like he's liftin' a truck up off of someone's dog, sticks a blur...

It also had an article w Chick [on him AWA the Elektric Band], w a melody/chord/[& some drum-hits/patterns] chart of Rumble by CC himself; & John Bergamo; Freddie Waits; & some VERY cool Chaffe "drum stuff" exercises on linear 16th note triplet-&-other groupings solo phrase ideas...[& also a photo of VC w his then-wife]...

I actually saw this in the local bookstore ATT...it also had a cassette tape in the pkg w it to coincide with the lessons in it, incldg the modulation excercise... but i didn't have any $ on me for some reasonOA ATT...so i came back the next day, & the 1 w the tape was GONE ): ; only just 1 of the mags was left [i was "ticked!"], so i snatched it up...very cool articles in there...

That was a GREAT magazine, every bit the mag MD is, or even better, IMO...too bad it went out of business...

Years ago I trashed lots of cassete tapes and drum mags (sometimes you do stupid things...), so it's probably in a dump somewhere! Sorry...
I think I kept this mag for the "Rumble" keys transcription that I thought about programming in a sequencer for playing along...

Yes, it was a VERY informative mag with a BARE MINIMUM of advertisement (it's probably why it went out of business). Lots of time must have been put in every issue (each had a tape). The article on Vinnie is cool too, you see what was his vision at 30.

And Vinnie plays matched on this issue's cover...

Clearly the man has a gold mine of tacit musical knowledge that I would love to see put down on paper or even video. I would be more than excited if VC put out a thorough book with analysis of lots of his own playing in his own words like the "Unreel" book. I think one of the reasons Vinnie's drumming stands out so much from the pack and why so many have to pick their jaws up from the ground when they hear him, especially for the first time, is because his application of music theory lies so outside of convetional manners. I don't have the musical background to really analzye his drumming to the degree you guys have, my view is 60% or more of the listener, and 40% music theory knowledge.

But since our diva won't probably document any of this in the near future, I would say pick Gavin Harrison's books and DVD. They're probably the best resource material I've seen on the subject. [img]cool.gif[/img]

I magazine too and I have the tape of it somewhere. I remember Vinnie does a couple of very brief but cool fills, setting the grooves up. I think it's the only thing he ever wrote, BTW.

I still have that mag, actually I have all the issues they ever did which is like 4 or 5. There was a Garibaldi issue that was good.

I think I have all of them too with the tapes. It was an excellent mag, much better than MD for education. Lots of advanced concept articles and music with long interviews. It was too good, too advanced to last. Pity.
