BOSTON - Sweeping into a meeting of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Caucus at the Democratic Convention yesterday, Teresa Heinz Kerry praised the activists for "pushing the envelope" to secure their rights.

"If nothing else, you will have a mom in the White House," the wife of Democratic nominee John Kerry said. "You can call your Mama T anytime."

The hundreds of delegates and supporters in the room leapt to their feet and chanted, "Mama T, Mama T, Mama T," as they waved their arms.

Democrats have embraced the gay community and made it part of their core constituency. But the party still is nervous about how far it can go toward endorsing such reforms as gay marriage without losing broad popular support.

John Kerry says he favors civil unions and opposes gay marriage. In 1996 he was one of 14 senators who voted against the Defense of Marriage Act that defined marriage as the union of a man and a woman. Yet he supported an amendment to the Massachusetts constitution that would have banned gay marriage, and opposed an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would ban gay marriage.

Out of character for a minute:

I have no problem with gay people and what they do in private (I do have a problem watching two guys kissing). I support their right to have all the legal rights, financial rights and social acceptance that any heterosexual couple has. I am not a fundamental Christian (I'm not sure I'm even a Christian as defined by organized religion) but went to a Lutheran Parochial school and served as an Alter Boy, so I know the "teachings".

With that said, I do not support gay marriage because marriage is a religious ceremony between a man and a woman that was created a long time ago to bind them and their future kids together as a family. The whole state sponsored marriage license thing is just a tax. GAE and I lived together for a few years before we got married. Both of us have been surgically sterilized so we are not going to be having any kids, so we got married for the same reasons any gay couple wants to get married. What is needed is some other state sponsored ceremony/certification that will provide all the benefits of a marriage and the emotional commitment, but leave the religious part out.

If it was called something else, this problem woould go away, but that's to sensible and doesn't let the radical socialists force a confrontation with the conservatives.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">There are plenty of reputable clergy from mainstream denominations who are willing and able - and do - perform such ceremonies (Presbyterian, Catholic, Reform Judaism, Unitarian).

So your assertion that because marriage is religious is entirely meaningless. We've got religious people already performing the ceremony, but because of ignorant assholes who never bothered to open up a history book or look at what's around them are so willing to rewrite history in order to preserve their own fucked up view of the world, every one else has to suffer.

Also, there's plenty of evidence to suggest that the early church performed same sex ceremonies, but only after politics got involved the practice ended. As a matter of fact, the Church didn't even make marriage a sacrament until like 1200 AD because they felt it entirely a secular matter. Then they figured the control of property transfer was involved...and, well, you can figure out the rest...

And just curious. How many kids have you and gae had together? Procreate away, Vasectomy Man. You'll be creating about as many children as that fag landscaper across the street.

Assignment: Do a Google search on Saints Serge and Bacchus. You'd think the Catholic Church would've had these two sent off to hell...but they're saints. Huh.

This issue has so little to do with gay couples having the same rights as heterosexuals and so much to do with pushing political agendas.

If there was some other thing (call it what you will) available to GAE and I, we would have used it.

What is it you want?

Do you want the same rights and acceptance GAE and I have, or do you want to be married?

How about you can get married, but don't get to claim each other on your taxes. I don't think you would like it.

We have clergy performing the ceremonies. They've been performing the ceremonies. But our government refuses to acknowledge it. The dominant political agenda forced down our throats is - and has been - from the religious right.

Now that gays are suing to get what everyone else has, they're accused of forcing themselves on everyone else.

I have a right to be pissed. You know - after a while ya just get sick of it. I mean really sick of it.

And the title is so much more involved than you can ever imagine.
