Steve Hass in St. Louis

I've been seeing this guys name on the board here, and noticed that he's playing at The Jazz Bistro here in St. Louis with Janis Siegel, Alan Pasqua, and Darek Oles. I'm going tonight. Let you know what I think.

I'm not sure I get that humor being that I'm new in here :-)

I'm not a jazz singer type of guy, but I know great musicians when I hear them, and the trio backing Janis Siegel was perfection.
I'm not that familiar with Steve, but after last night I think he's one of the best jazz drummers I've ever heard live. He grooved at a whisper all night trading smiles with Alan Pasqua everytime they hooked up on an improvised phrase. He stayed out of the way playing super soft(the softest I've heard any drummer play), until the right moments came out for him to hit harder and build the music dynamically. He had 3 solos all night(not enough), one was a hi-hat solo ala Max Roach, and another was with mallets playing bilstering single strokes between his hands and feet. His swing playing and backbeat groove drumming was an inspiration to me. Thanks HOD for hipping me to this great drummer.
All I can say about Alan Pasqua is that he's a brilliant musician. Janis in her own right held it down, displaying some amazing scat solos. It was a fun night.

Thank you for the great review GISL, and thanks for all the info Fuse. I wish I could have seen that show. They are not coming through here. TMT did come through here 2 years ago, but I don't really like them although they always have great drummers. The Hass you described sounds different than the one I saw, but i know he can really change it up for the gig at hand. I've seen him play super busy yet musical, and loud! I like that, HA!

I saw Hass with Janis at The Blue Note in NYC with Pattitucci, Stefon Harris and gil Gomdstein. Killin'. I want to see this new band with Pasqua. I love his playing with Tony Williams.

Pasqua is one of my faves, too. The stuff on Tony's "Believe It" is just the sh** for fusion of that era [mid-70's]....& also here Allan H has that fluid, legato style & identifiable sound that was to uniquely identify him as his trademark...his solo lines aren't as 'out' as they would eventually become later, but they are STILL killin'...check "Fred"...awesome...Tony occasionally rushes a little in spots, but SO WHAT - he's on fire, & it's a blistering & landmark recording nevertheless...this is the album about which Phil Collins has been quoted as saying "I wish I could play like that..."

Pasqua also does this killin' keyb solo [flute patch sound] on Holdsworth's Metal Fatigue, in trk 5 - Un-Merry Go Round, starting at around 11:21 [within the "4th movement/section" in it which actually starts approx 11:09 ] & endg around 13:10...it starts off airy & spacey w whole notes & the like, & at 12:17 to 12:23 it has the first line of a flurry of 16th's that is just the greatest 'crescendo'...what a solo...[*chills*]

Another pianist "Alan" that i dug a lot was A Zavod...& a cat named Chris Rhyne was a fave too [played a great pno on Ponty's Mystical Adventures - Final Truth, Pt. 1]...
