There is a little decay between sound and image for me [img]confused.gif[/img] , i don't have that with you others vid's , is it a problem on my pc or you have same problem when you see it ?

I understand "If you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything" but I will not sit back and read such biased fanboyism without speaking up.
So I must ask what the poing of this so called 'play off' is? We've discussed the pros and cons of music competitions here at length but I just don't get it. What was going on here and what are you getting out of it?
Neveis, you start the solo by ripping off Dennis' version of Rosanna on the Pearl site (which I have said before, I find very stilted and non musical) and then procede to run through a load of very flashy and chops Dennis licks, dispersed by the odd rhythm... why? What are we to think about this as a piece of 'music' and what does this display tell us? To me it seems that you might as well have been in your bedroom practicing.
You are obviously a talented 'drummer' Nevesis, but I just don't get it, sorry. This display didn't make me tap my feet or move me at all and that is why I listen to and play music. I just didn'y feel that it was inspired in any way - lazy in fact.
Do you ever play with other musicians? What is your approach when you play with them and what was going through your mind before you sat down to go through this set of clearly rehearsed routines?
These are just my opinions and I'm interested to hear your thoughts.

No doubt you have some skill...I'm w/ Dazzler in that some refinement is in order to make the thing more musical....groovin'. I think Dazzler sums it up when he says it doesn't make one want to tap their foot. One thing about the solo for me is that it is amorphous....it builds and falls, builds and falls. I would work it out so it has more of a shape or theme. It is evident that you spend considerable time behind your drums however...keep it up
Nice Evan. I see that you added a LOT of groove/time sections throughout which I know a lot of people mentioned. I'd be curious to know if that helps you with the judges. Sounds good as usual. How were the other players?
Dazz, your points are well taken I think and obviously everyone here is going to agree with them including me.
I personally hate drumming competitions but Evan is just playing to the judge's sensibilities based on experience with these types of contents. In other words, he's trying to win.
Touch, taste and groove will not get you anything in these competitions. I remember maybe 4 years ago at the finals in LA, there was a guy in his late 20's, maybe early 30's who was CLEARLY the most mature/musical player. He wasn't even in the top 3 at the end of the day and this was being judged by some of the best players around. He had chops, taste, touch and his solo was based around actual tunes. (he played some great melodies on his toms without being hokey or cheesy)
Fact of the matter is, it's not a musical "contest." (no such thing anyway) And, it seemed like he was connecting with the people I could see in the audience in that video who came to see the drum porn display that is a drum competition.
Again, I completely agree with your points, I just think you're missing the "point" of the solo. (which is to have no point)

Just out of interest, how is one judged or marked at these events? Do you have a panel of people holding up score cards after each flam triplet played on the feet?!?!?
6.0, 7.0, 6.8, 6.8, oh..... and a surprising 7.3 from the Croation judge, surely he must be pleased with that. He's clearly worked hard at this routine, although that last double rattamacue grouped in 7's over a dotted crotchet could have been more cleanly executed I feel!!!

Nev will eventually get it together and realize that solo competitions are lame. But it's something every drummer should do at least once.
I was in the finals at the Florida Drum Expo. Everyone thought they would win(including me). Then Tony Medierous(spell?)(winner MD 2000)played. I was like, "OK, the contest is over." His MD solo was not like the one I witnessed, which flowed a lot better. He was killing. That guy had like 5 or 6 drumsets he won over the years.
There was some other dude who had chops out the yin yang, but when he was done, he stood up and turned his back on the crowd.
Then to make matters worse, some drummer of an ethnic origin, who subsequentially lost, sued Thoroughbread Music for not having a representative judge from his ethnocentricity. And that was the end a of a great show.

i agree with dazzler and derek.
nevesis, why do you keep changing grips? you're never going to master one grip if you keep changing grips every 15 secs. my advice, other than what daz and derek wrote, stick to one grip (imo, traditional). when you're playing match, you sound like dennis, when you play traditional, you sound like dennis playing traditional. [img]tongue.gif[/img] is he your biggest influence?
I would like to thank Derek for being one of the few people who actually understand what I was doing up there. Its very refreshing to see someone who just sees it how it is and does not feel the need to say anything else..

I am never going to master one grip if I keep switching grips while I play?
This is one of the most ignorant fucking things I have ever read on a forum. Is that the best you got to try and know me down? Haha I hope not. For the record, I have only been playing traditional ONE year, and I plan to have BOTH grips mastered. I am well on my way I believe. Maybe you need to go hit the woodshed and work on your's more? [img]smile.gif[/img]
The Drum Off is just for fun, I do it once a year to try and get to the National stage for attention and recognition. The rest of my 364 days of the year are spent playing music, playing out in clubs here in NY, and recording. Get it straight!
