I think that just says it all, that and the fact that the bonehead is planning a move to...ummmmm...the UK!?! Um, isn't the UK government more or less along with the US on recent policies? I mean, atleast fo someplace different than the country that is basically just like the US in many ways. No offence to UK folk. But I know the country I would feel the most at home in would be the UK (aside from parts of Canada). But in the UK, aside from better foriegn policies (I guess), don't people flee that place due to taxes? Not like anybody has ever written a song damning the UK tax.

How moronic. There wasn't really that much differnce between Bush and Kerry in terms of foreign policy. Kerry wanted to "win" in Iraq, and drag France et cetera into it as well. He justs wants to be a more aggressive Emperor as oppossed to Bush, who is basically Caligula.

While I consider both of you two my brothers in glam, I obviously disagree politically. For Lycan, I appreciate your insightful question. It's a good one, and I'm not sure I have the answer. Would I have pity for the right had Kerry won? Probably not, but those of us on the left aren't asking for pity. Had Kerry won, however, the right would still have the Gay marriage bans, the Republican Senate and House, and would be able to limit Kerry's ability to govern. With Bush winning, however, the left has little to do with anything coming out of Washington now, so our voice will be hard to hear. Do I disagree with comparisons of Bush to Hitler? Of course. That's obsurd in every possible way. Now you have heard someone on the left say that is wrong. In the media, you won't ever hear it because to honor such insanity with a response is crazy. While some of the stereotypes you mentioned about leftists are indeed true, I hope that you could see from both my last post, and this one, that I'm NOT one of those guys. As I stated in my first post, I'm NOT saying the "moral right" vision of America is wrong, I'm just saying it's wrong for me. I've lived in Texas, LA, NYC, and Missouri, and it probably won't surprise you to know that I'm MUCH more comfortable on the coasts. Here I'm an outcast. Here, people view Bush as a gift from God. I view him as an arrogant asshole who is destroying the America I love so much. Either way, though, he's the President, and I wish him the best. I would hope that you are smart enough to know that the Kerry supporters would be crybabies if they were leaving the country because they lost and didn't get what they want. That's not why. They are leaving because this country has moved too close to letting the Bible govern. Read my post bro. It's not about being a loser. It's about having the strength to say "This place is no longer my home...I must go find a new one." In many ways, it's no different than the Pilgrims leaving England to find a place where they would be at peace. Those of us who believe passionately in love, compassion, and a total and complete separation of church and state, are finding ourselves in a land that probably won't provide us much peace. Moving on to a new one isn't being a sorry loser, it's seeking higher ground when your old home has washed away...If you break this down to just "Kerry lost, so you crybabies are leaving", then you don't really understand the issue at all. The only freedoms we are losing are those that the people, in their mad dash for 'safety', trade in so they can be protected by the government. Nobody wants to be hurt anymore. You feel inconvenienced? Sue. You don't get your way? Call the ACLU.
That said, we are not anywhere close to 30's Germany. Any comparisons are rather foolish. 30's Germany wasn't under the spector of being attacked by people who wanted to kill them.
Sandi, I think you know that I respect you. I also allow for dissenting opinions to my own. I agree that the church and state need to be separated in the manner with which they are in the constitution (aka, the govt. will never create a state mandated religion). If we ever start veering towards being a theocracy (read: Syria, Jordan), I'd be out of here. However, we are miles away from that. Every politician will propose and oppose laws based mostly on who they are. If they're religious and God plays a huge role in their lives, then that will shape their decisions. Of course, it will only shape them to the point which the Constitution allows. The whole idea that Bush wants to take away gay rights and a woman's right to choose is nuts. If that's what he wants, then why didn't he push for that in his first term? Other than the patriot act (which yes, was a bit reactionary to 9/11, but was still what the people were calling for), please tell me how he has destroyed america. The proposed amendment to the constitution banning gay marriage, btw, wasn't any sort of priority to Bush and Co. until some peeps in SF decided to ignore the law and marry gay couples. After this giant debacle, Bush saw a need to propose the Amendment. I really doubt we will ever see it pass due to the fact that it's changing the constitution. Many republicans, I have a feeling, would rather see it decided on a state by state basis (such as how it was on Tuesday). I, as a moderate, concur with this. For now, I think that the proposed amendment serves to keep individual pockets from perpetrating such activities in the future.
btw, Sandi, you say that the media doesn't comment on such accusations due to their absurdity. Why then do they show massive amounts of coverage of protesters with signs making such statements? Why cover them at all if this is their message?
Also, if we are sliding toward theocracy, then why the raping of the rights of the 11 Christians who were merely demonstrating silently at a gay rights rally in Pennsylvania? I think we might be heading in the opposite direction, personally.

I have to say i agree with Sandi.
Of course it's silly to compare Bush with Hitler but this is still scary to me.
Kerry didn't appear as a savior to me, but someone who could be more open to the world and less right wing oriented.
Nevertheless, I think Kerry failed in being able to communicate with the common people of America, when you look at the vote map, just the west and east coasts chose Kerry.
About the actors and musicians who said they will move to Europe, I don't think they'll all do it.
I like Sean Penn and Michael Moore but Mr. Moore doesn't need to move since he already spends most of his time here in France :-)
My wife pointed out part of Kerry's problem. It was that whenever he did the debates or anything, he only spoke to the people of the state he was in. It drove her crazy. Bush kept talking about America as a whole, and Kerry spent the whole time talking about Virginia or whatever.
I'll say this about the election. It was kind of funny, usually my wife and I can talk about anything. But after this election, neither one of us wanted to talk about who we elected. We both just stood there shrugging our shoulders and saying "I hope I did the right thing". It sucked.

But I find it ridiculous how the Kerry supporters acted before the win and how they reacted after...What I saw on T.V. was that some of the Kerry supporters were animals and were those people that would instigate a riot or do anything to win, the hatred some Kerry supporters had was unbelievable...not civilized at all.

I haven't noticed any effect... things seem pretty much as they did a week ago - less the political ads.
It doesn't feel like the country is anymore divided than it has always been.
What I do find pathetic is the past two presidential elections, I spent my time thinking "which idiot do i vote for". And both times I didn't make a decision until I was in the booth. And even after I wasn't sure if it was the right decision.
But good or bad - it doesn't matter anyway. We the people do not vote for a president.
Those who are frustrated with the direction of the country are not idiots, nor are they morons. There are obviously people on this board who don't have any idea what this election really meant. It wasn't about Kerry and Bush, it wasn't about Iraq. Most elections are determinded by policy. This election was determined by completely different things.
With the gay marriage bans passing by a 3-to-1 margin all around the country, by the exit polls showing that that "moral values" is what won the election for Bush, and by very right-wing Conservatives winning almost every close election, including a devout creationist defeating Tom Daschle in South Dakota, it says a lot about where this country is heading. Whether I like it or not, or anyone else, the truth is the truth. This country is moving towards a much more right wing, Conservative ideology that includes letting religion play a larger role in government, and "morals" to be the key to election victory.
I'm not saying this is wrong. While I do disagree with it, I utterly and completely respect our democracy, and the majority of this country spoke. All of these "morons" as you guyz put it that are talking about leaving the country aren't doing so because they are stupid. They are doing it because they, like me, see this country becoming a place they don't want to live. As I said to a friend of mine yesterday, it's not that this country is necessarily wrong, it's just that it's wrong for ME.
Most of these people won't move. Those of us on the left will heal from these wounds, and we'll fight again another day for the country that we love. It's just that it's a shock right now to see the country take such a huge jump to the right. My father broke down and cried three times the day after the election when we were talking about it. A guy I teach with broke down into tears in the teacher's lounge last week. Two good friends of our family have decided to move to Europe. A guy just committed suicide on the World Trade Center site as an act of protest.
What everyone MUST understand is that whether you were a Bush supporter or a Kerry supporter, or if you were one of those poor people who still don't understand that there were HUUUUUUUUUGE differences between them, this election showed just how different the two visions of America are right now, and just how passionate both sides feel. These wounds will heal, but it will take time.
I'll leave you with a quote from a GREAT editorial I read the other day. He says: "Why didn't I feel depressed after George Bush defeated Dukakis in 1988, or even when Bush's son defeated Gore in 2000? And why did I wake up so deeply troubled yesterday? It's because Bush won by getting the vote not from people who favor different policies than I do, they favor a whole different kind of America. We don't just disagree on what American should be doing, we disagree on what American is."
Well stated, and deeply troubling my friends, no matter what side you are on. Just be respectful of those who are hurting right now. The pain is real, and tremendously intense. I know...I've been feeling it every day for nearly a week, and I don't know when it will go away...

Sandi, you speak of this pain. The thing I don't understand is the almost megalomaniacal egoism shown by some of those who supported Kerry. They come across as condescending, elitist snobs and then wonder why the middle class shakes their heads at them. It's this notion that those who voted for Bush were mere reactionaries who didn't think the whole thing through. Well I, for one, did think it through. I didn't like either candidate. If Kerry had anything of substance to say, I would have given him my vote. However, he pointed out problems and offered no solutions. This is not a good quality for a leader. Therefore, Bush got my vote.
A jewish friend of mine lamented last tuesday about how idiots tried to demonize Bush by comparing him to Hitler (a practice I have yet to hear any on the left condemn, btw). She had two grandfathers who died at Dachau and Auschwitz. She knew that this comparison was ludicrous. The country spoke. Those who are leaving seem to have problems understanding that they are in the minority. They are not the 'voice of america'. A question I pose is, should the shoe be on the proverbial other foot, would the left have pity on the right should they decide to leave? Would they understand that it's just people with thoughts that run contrary to the mainstream? Would they be able to abstain from calling them derogatory terms?
I don't think that those who leave are stupid. I don't think they're morons. I think they're silly. I think they're selfish. I think they're acting like children who, not getting their way, are going home. I don't understand this line of thinking. It makes little to no sense to me. Do I want them gone? No. Do I want their political ideology in place? No.

6. You should stop playing American "football". There is only one kind of football. What you refer to as American "football" is not a very good
game. The 2.15% of you who are aware that there is a world outside your borders may have noticed that no one else plays "American" football. You
will no longer be allowed to play it, and should instead play proper football. Initially, it would be best if you played with the girls. It
is a difficult game. Those of you brave enough will, in time, be allowed to play rugby (which is similar to American "football", but does not

7. You should declare war on Quebec and France, using nuclear weapons if they give you any merde. The 97.85% of you who were not aware that there
is a world outside your borders should count yourselves lucky. The Russians have never been the bad guys. "Merde" is French for "5hit". You
will no longer be allowed to own or carry guns. You will no longer be allowed to own or carry anything more dangerous in public than a

My only argument there is the World Series thingy. Even many Baseball fans don't know this one. The reason it is called the "World" Series is due to a thing that people think is new to sports. The first tournaments were sponsored by a newspaper (I am almost 100% positive is was a paper), and said paper was...THE WORLD!!! So the name "World Series" is actually a product name, not unlike calling it "The Coca-Cola Series".
I agreed about everything else though. All though in line with that baseball bit, Baseball, unlike Football, is VERY popular in other countries. Example? Just look at how few baseball players are actually from the US nowdays!
Oh, and UK beer is neither "flat" nor "warm". Maybe by most of the US standards it is, but most beers are meant to be enjoyed at approx. 45-55 degrees. Though I am sure that the comments of it being "warm and flat" is also a joke making fun of most of the US for thinking that is how they drink it.
But I have also come to learn that even ice in your "soda" is not done in the UK, is this true???

It's powerful stuff! Its alcohol content is misleading. I believe it is an 8.5%, which is pretty high, but it works more like a 12% for some reason! If your Irn Bru is a soft-drink, then we surely won't have it here. I don't know how well that stuff travels, and this country doesn't like those crazy outside the US soft-drinks. Odd, isn't it? If I have a beer in the fridge, it also will come out, be opened and then decanted, and then sit for about 10-15 minutes before I drink it. I find with your Belgian ales it is most fun to open and decant, then take your first sip at about 5 minutes, and then cradle it for about a half hour to 45 minutes, noting all of the changes it undergoes in that amount of time.Quote:

As for why we never get stuff "flat" here, it would have most to do with the only way to get most of your ales and such is to get ahold of the bottles. The only places with them on tap are usually in the cities, and even then they are kegged and not in a cask. The keg holds the natural carbonation. Oh sure, I can get Newcastle Brown (it really knocks ya down) almost anywhere in bottles, and in some places on tap, but it is a far cry from the nectar of the Gods I hear it is over there, as is Guinness. I'm a stout freak, but given the choice, I will always take US Newcastle over US Guinness.

I will keep an eye out for that one next time I am out and about. Is it a decent sized company? We get some smallish stuff out this way, but it's hard to even get many US Micro brews. But I will keep an eye out. It's a local for you, eh?
Shepherd Neame is a medium-sized brewer, not a micro-brewer. It is fairly local, as I live in Kent. Shepherd Neame have many pubs around south-east England, including several in my town. Most of their brews are available in 500ml bottles in all the major grocery stores.
Bishop's Finger is the brew for you. Quite potent.

Well, lets see, we can talk about politics, or beer. I'll take the beer. Political talk sucks as you will never change somebodies opinion. But a fine tasting beer, we can most all agree on. And most microbrews in the US also do a micro Root Beer for our non-Alcohol swilling brothers such as Raggz. So yeah, fine beer talk is always an open option when you are talking about something as silly as politics.
I will hopefully be by a good Liqour store tomorrow night, I will check for this brew then! Heck man, any of them will be up my alley I am sure. I most want to try their Bitter. [img]graemlins/smarty.gif[/img]
