Can you possibly post up that mp3 you posted a while ago? Was some bigband session you did. Swung really nice.I THINK it was fairly slow, but not entirely sure. Cheers. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Cheers Rudy, very sweet of you. The thing you heard at 0.34 is what you'd call a typical jazz 'send off'. It's bebop language and you'll hear all the jazz drummers do it or variations of it, from Elvin to Tain. So for example in the 8th bar of a section you'll catch the and of 4 of the last bar, the 3 on the snare of the 1st bar of the next phrase, the and of 4 of that bar and the 3rd and 4th beats of the second bar of the new phrase. I hope that make sense!!

As for that silly fill on Move, it's just a dotted crotchet, quaver and crotchet. It's all in time but because i's fairly fast, it sounds like it's slowed down I guess!!

Drumkid, we recorded Lucky So & So at Angel Studios and the alto player was Jim Knight. My friend James Brett, who arranged and produced the music mp3'd it to me, I pressume that it was the final mix, although I can't be sure.

were you happy with the drum sound - i think it's great - what snare are you using? actually i'm listening to "move" kit sounds nice on that also - same studio?

DK, Move was recorded at a different studio and if I remember correctly, we just used one or two overheads so you get a nice feeling of an overall kit sound as opposed to everything being individually miked and separated.

On listening back I think the bass drum on Move sounds a bit 'rocky' in retrospect, I've tuned it up since! [img]wink.gif[/img]

Hey dazzler, so are you doing studio sessions every week? Is that your main income, or you teach at schools or privately too? Do you do any function band stuff as well or pit work?

Rudy, teaching wise, at the moment I have 2 private schools that I teach in a couple of days a week and I also teach at home. I also tutor at The Glamorgan Jazz Summer School every year. As for playing, well it's the odd session, pop, jazz gigs and of course functions! It's always varied and interesting and definitely keeps me on my toes! As for shows, I dep on The Rat Pack ocassionally.

Hey that's cool. The ratpack is still on down at westminster? That's some great music to play. I did a sinatra show when I was on ships, just fabulous to play. The jazz course must be fun. Are you one to one or teaching a whole class?

I've got some functions coming up from this weekend with different bands. One of them is on their V drums, so all I have to do is take my headphones, sticks and pedal. I love not lugging heavy gear!
Speaking of private schools, I'm kind of keen to get into some. I teach at 5 schools now in hertfordshire, essex, enfield and putney. But the rates at private ones are even higher. Like nearer ?35 a hour, right? I'll have to start making contact with some, but if you get offered any you can't do, gimme a shout. [img]smile.gif[/img]

Hey Rudy, not sure which one you mean but there's Just a Lucky so and so which was on the soundtrack of the film The Life and Death of Peter Sellers

or Move which was basically a demo from an 11 piece band that I play in which plays repetoir from the Miles Davis Birth Of The Cool album and Mel Torme Swings Schubert Alley, with great arrangements by Marty Paich.

Let me know if these are not the ones.

No, they're different tunes, but these are great. Wow, I didn't know you played on the sellers movie. I was listening to a review of it, sounds like a good movie. Nice playing btw, terrific feel. [img]wink.gif[/img]

Nice playing on move, and I dig the snare crash combo at 0:34, where you play a snare hit on beat 3 into a crash on the '+' of 4, followed immediately by another snare on the next 3 and crash on 4. Tasty!

I can't figure out what happens at 1:55. You do a fill, and it sounds like a rall. Is it a rall or are the 2 bars being counted at normal tempo? I'm hearing you play 6 hits, as though it's a ralled 4/4 bar and 2/4 bar. But I guess I'm hearing it wrong?
