I agree - I picked it up to have as a "handy audio/visual reference" and it's perfect for that. It's sure not something you'd watch end to end, and there are no extras - just the grooves, one after the other, with two examples of each at a slow and a quicker tempo. But the guy's enthusiasm is pretty infectious.
Take a look at two super video clips on Vic Firth's web site:
Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials.

Wow he's playing some great stuff on those clips but my Gawd do those DW's sound like ass. Not sure if there's heads on those toms, or just cardboard.
BTW this is a classic example of me being hesitantly honest for fear of being percieved an ass hole.

Tommy has chops but not much soul. Basically another guy who plays what he was taught.
This issue of sound never ceases to amaze me. No doubt he is playing top of the line drums, yet?
hmmm...on the GETTING STARTED ON DRUMS intro clip, kinda surprised to hear the bass drum out of sync on several notes.
WOW you're right. That stung for a sec.
I just got Tommy Igoe's "Essential Grooves" DVD from Netflix, and I was surprised at how good it is. Much of the stuff is very basic, but the World music section is really cool. He covers pretty much everything from a cha cha to a mozambique, and plays each groove in slow and fast musical settings (which is great, since most of us probably wouldn't know when to play a lot of this stuff).
Although I found the visuals sometimes cheesy (they occasionally cut to black and white grainy footage, in an attempt to look like a music video or something), the world music section makes is worth getting. If you mastered every groove on his DVD, you'd be a monster.
Yeah, Tommy's new DVD is great and highly instructional. Just being able to play all the grooves included with such ease and flow it would be awesome...
The final track is also great with that beautiful African flavor...
Peace

Keeping in mind that this is a world distributed instructional DVD and not just a web drum file...it is really a mistake. Yes, the intro part (the first notes the plays with the playback) are seriously out of time. Also some backbeats played after a crash-bassdrum notes could be better. Something happened...maybe he didn?t listen to the drum-take after each song, maybe he did but he didn?t mind it, maybe they hadn?t much time for the recording... In his case I would have said: "Aurghhh, Joe(engineer man)delete this, for God."...The sound of the video seems to be pretty good.
Anyway, I love the job Tommy is doing teaching the grooves, many fundamentals things and the way he explain them. You can find all the rhytmes (many styles, with every drum score included)in the vic firth site. (After the video is downloaded in your screen, you can find them in your Temporary Internet Files of your PC (Windows users). Then you copy them to another folder)
Also, I am sure his DVDs are very informatives.
Bye.
P.D.:in my case I haven?t a world distributed instructional DVD...well and a DVD distributed in my neighbourhood neither.
Bye.

Tommy is a great drummer when it comes to technique. He learned from all the right people ! And his playing experience is tremendous, seeing he has been playing in the pit of The Lion King in NYC for years !
But I have to admit with some of you, he is lacking soul and feeling when he plays. I've seen him play "live" twice and, the same thing: Great technique and that's it. That's why he is producing educational videos/DVDs.
About the drum sound, I believe it's just the recording. The DWs he plays usually sound great. But I admit with Steve Holmes, they do sound like cardboard in the two clips offered in a post above.
He's really good, but these clips are very bashing like. He also stops and waits for the click as if he was a bit off in his licks. Very Wecklish, as he studied with Weckl in NYC back in the day. He uses the Weckl lick rllffrlff alot--I know I do!
Overall, he rocks, and I'm here in VA, so...
I'm a tommy fan. I have an album of his somewhere. It's not perfect, he does make mistakes, but his playing is great. Particularly on the 'sultan swings' if you happen to know that tune? I agree though, his toms on one of these clips I saw don't sound too good.
His toms sound assy on the video, as well. But like I said, some of his world grooves are off the hook.
Havent heard this DVD [or those clips yet], but I thought his playing very cool with the NY Voices...JMO.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Ah yes, that was it fuse, New York Voices. I couldn't remember the album I heard him play 'the sultan swings' on, but it was with them before he recorded it on his own album. First time I heard it I thought it was weckl. Some serious chops on that tune.Quote:

wow - just watched the intro clip. His time is shocking, all over the place during the first 16 bars. He stacks it within the first 2 beats... and they left this take in?
Also, that first solo was orrible. Loud and tasteless. Why is this guy playing "with artists such as Lauryn Hill, Stanley Jordan, Art Garfunkel" if he can't hold a simple groove down and play in time with a click? I don't get it.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Tommy's father has had a significant impact in the drumming community. I have suggested the above DVD to many students and young drummers. Tommy is a solid player--my only disappointment was this is a DVD geared for new drummers. They, for the most part, will not catch what MethodAir did, BUT...this is for new drummers and he should live what he teaches and teach what he lives. There really is no excuse for this mistake and it should have been done over, especially for new drummers wanting to know what drumming is all about. I think we all jump time here & there, but we all aren't making an instructional DVD.Quote:

T-Bo is right on however with the other DVD by, "eating the watermelon and spitting out the seeds." Having the ability to pull out those "World Grooves" at will or inserting them partially into a tune, ala Gadd on Late in the Evening is musically sweet.
Umm.... Maybe Tommy was just showing the younger crowd that even HE makes mistakes...
...Or maybe not...
Ok, truth be told: Tommy and I are great friends and he was so kind as to let ME sit in on the first two bars of HIS DVD intro! Yes, i admit, the audio you are hearing is all me and Tommy actually doesn't make mistakes
I posted my comments on the video clips thread... didn't know the party was in here! lol

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yes Fuse, but this display is simply shocking AND it's left on a tutorial dvd which is obviously intended and to show students the importance of the fundamentals of drumming - which this guy clearly has not mastered.Quote:

I just don't get how or why he left in an example where he shows an inability to control his right foot and play a relatively simple pattern in time.
If this Tommy geezer was on a jazz gig, in the 4th chorus of Cherokee when it was burning and he was stretching out and improvising, creating and challenging himself and the other musicians then we could forgive him for maybe dropping a beat or not fully executing an idea. But this is the very opening of a dvd and he was demonstrating a basic groove which is has to be played in time, with groove and feeling, all of which he fails to accomplish.
Also his solos are loud, brash and tasteless.

I think people are making this out to be a big deal when it's not, it wasn't THAT off...
...and I do agree, his soloing lacks dynamics.
Overall I think the guy has some good ideas and chops, but I woulden't even put him in my top 50.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">CL, with all due respect, I think that you're missing the point here mate. If anyone releases an educational dvd which is intended to teach the basics of drumming, then an ability to master these basics is imperative. To say 'he's not THAT out' is not the pont, he shouldn't be out al all. Especially when he is opening his dvd with a rhythm that he can't play in time.Quote:
I think people are making this out to be a big deal when it's not, it wasn't THAT off...
What does that tell a beginner about how to execute basic ideas and more importantly, of the standards we have to maintain in order to be good drummers with good time?
Let me ask you a question - would you go out and pay good money for a cd where the drummer doesn't lock in with the bassist or can't play his parts correctly (as in the case of Tommy Igoe). Would you want to put on a pair of headphones and subject yourself to out of time, grooveless drumming?
Right Dazzler, I do get it...
and if we want to scrutinize it some more, his pronounceation on some words could be more articulate... I mean the video is in english, for an english speaking market, so why can he not say "immediatly" properly? (pedal technique video)
I'm sure we could find other things, nothings perfect.
The kicks are hardly off... and no beginner would notice a kick being a millisecond off a click or bassline... sure Igoe could have been more of a perfectionist... but the mistake was almost non-existent!
Which kicks / sections did you think were really out of time? Point them out to me, pls.
I'm a bit confused too. The video was horribly out of sync with the sound in several places (especially where it cuts away from the front-on view and tries to be "cool"). But I confess I didn't hear a great deal that was as bad as being suggested. Yes, the kick got bent out of shape around 0:18, but "shockingly bad?"
Perhaps my standards are just too damn low.
I do agree about the live solos, which have the dynamic range of a stampede.

...And welcome to [just about] every rock drum solo ever performed... But i guess RnR was never really about nuance, now, was it...
Still haven't watched it...could it be that the vid is actually out of sync w the aud as was said...? If not, then I'd have to agree w Dazz AFA the ideology of what he's trying to say...but if it's a minor lock-in / feel thing, no biggie...but still, Dazz makes a point about being a pro & not wanting something like that to go out in permanent, instructional format documentation...
Have to go check it out...hmmmmm...
...2 strange oddities that have had me perplexed in here...this Igoe thing [as he kicked axe w the NYVoices], & that recent Dennard DVD fracas that has been commented about [havent seen that either]...as he was once[?] a very kick-axe drummer...don't know if the fact of his being deaf has anything to do with it...[?]

His headphones might be part of the problem. I'm switching to stronger isolation headphones from the Beyer DT 100s I currently use. It's really hard to get a good mix when the drums are leaking through like crazy.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">being pedantic won't get you anywhere CL!! there is absolutely NO excuse for not being able to play a simple beat on an educational dvd, especially when you have the ability to record it as many times as you want and edit it heavily. He's in a high-tech studio with the latest recording and sound gear so there's no excuse for not hearing yourseld or having poor sound. Let's not forgive the guy for his ineptitude,Quote:

As I said previously and sorry to repeat myself, but Igoe isn't re-inventing the wheel here, he's demonstrating simple grooves - BADLY.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Right away, in the first bar he plays two horrible bass drum beats out of time and continues to play inconsistantly. I can't point you to where in the clip as I watched it once and don't care to see it again. I was just horrified to read some comments lauding this guy, when from what I've seen. his solos sound like a fire in a pet shop and his time and feel are dreadful. That shuffle groove was rigid.Quote:

In any case, the video I was recommending (for what it's worth), is Essential Grooves, not the one you guys are talking about. I still think it's a good reference tool.
I agree with Chuch, his playing is great and original. The tom sound may be due to many factors. It doesn't sound close miked and he may have been experimenting with some sort of triple-ply head prototype.

i haven't seen the DVD but did the see the clip on VF's site. his playing is great!! i don't know why some people are raggin on him, but i think he's a great drummer. i believe his drums sounded that way because of the quality of the video as well as the boomy room.
Just shuffled through Tommy's new DVD. T-Bo is right, it's a great resource. He covers 47 grooves. At first I thought this is going to be great for my students. Then, the more I watched it I realized, this is going to be great for me.
The only problem I can see will be finding a music stand big enough for that poster.
Nice job Tommy!
