Well on the way home i finally played with the vtec crossover points.
Current setting: 2500RPM vtec crossover. I have not seen any part throttle det. that I was seeing before. In fact the only time the J&S seen knock was about 2600rpm in 4th gear. (rush hour and i did not notice what gear i was in) I tried flooring at various RPM points in VTEC 2500+rpm no knock on the J&S. Part throttle same thing i am just about 100% knock free.
The car is now very responive with the VTEC crossover that low. I was surprised to say the least. I excepted the car to bog but it did not once. It would seem that the car *really* likes VTEC that low with the SC. I know that it did not like it with the car n/a. The car took right off( a little to good for rush hour). The butt dyno gives it two cheeks up!!!
I will monitor it over the next couple of days and see what happens but it looks good so far. Just think VTEC all the time!!!
If anybody has any questions about my set up or wants me to try anything just let me know.

Wow, cool finding! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Did you also richen up the mixture at that rpm point? What are your fuel settings? Thanks.
-
a/f gauge reads three greens and i have not changed any fuel setting on the fields. I am currently running 14BTDC 3/4degree retard/psi on the BTM and base FP at 66psi.
gas mileage: we will see in a week of driving like this!

You mean that you got rid of the tip-in detonation that I get around 3k-4k. Did you still have it with the btm installed (but no fields)? I have been reluctant to buy anything but I might have to get one. Please keep us posted.

Save your money and buy a V-AFC from APEXi. The electronics are 10 times better on the APEXi unit. The fields unit is ok but the problem is that the electronics are not consistent. You should be able to make the same amount of horse power with the unit off as when the unit is on all zero settings. After testing on the dyno the car actually lost power on all zero settings. Plus the settings on it are non-variable. With the V-AFC the settings are throttle dependent. So at part throttle regular driving it is actually possible to get better gas mileage out of your car while realizing the power gains at WOT. Something to think about.
-
Oh another thing with the regular S-AFC (non vtec version of the V-AFC), on a fully built LS turbo, we reached 350bph on the dyno on pump gas!!!! Call 949-457-1234 for more details on that.
-
Yeah I really like the V-AFC, Jim is selling these and they are going on the blackbird motor's. Really good tunability and ability to record runs so you can actually see if it helped or hurt your performance! http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif

I think the fuel setting on the field are kind of well bad. But two years ago when i bought it is was the only thing goin!
Question: does the v-afc have *ALL* the fuel settings of the s-afc. Cause if it does i think that it is a slam dunk then to buy one. If not it i will prob. buy the s-afc for fuel tunning!!!.
Civicboy: yes the btm is hooked up and it was still there with the BTM. and yes i am not seeing the tip-in det. once in VTEC.

...doesn't the rising pressure of the FMU make it hard to tune the V-AFC? Meaning that with the FMU, and varied driving, the settings will be "jumping around". If you keep the FMU that is. http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

sounds interesting.
Wonder what your gas mileage will be at that setting?
-
Well the FMU when we are in boost is is at a constant pressure http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/wink.gif Hence the name constant pressure blower http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/smile.gif So the FMU really goes to X psi times the rise rate and stays there.
Yes as we get to the top of the RPM range it goes up a little bit more but for the most part the fuel pressure is constant. Yes the V-AFC has all the tunability of the S-AFC and a V-TEC controller built in to boot http://www.hostboard.com/ubb/cool.gif

I'm thinking about making a custom one, with a vtec light, so I can look at when the light comes on on the tach. The parts, (and I forget exactly) shouldn't be more than 10-20 dollars. Now that's a bargin.

Good points Jim on VTEC. It has been a few days now and everything looks good. My VTEC will be staying that low.
Thanks for the info Will i tried phoning Apexi on Friday but their phone system kept hanging up on me. Looks like i will be buying one now.

One thing that I have noticed in a few different posts is changing the VTEC engagement point to really low rpm levels... keep in mind that for VTEC to actually engage, TWO conditions must be met: First, sufficient oil pressure must be present in the rocker-arm oil rail to close the pressure switch; Second, a pre-determined rpm must be reached to engage the VTEC solenoid.
With this in mind, it is very possible (especially if you use lighter/thinner oils) that when you engage the VTEC solenoid, there is insufficient oil pressure to make the change, and the true VTEC engagement happens slightly higher in the rpm range.
So Jeff, if you plan on making a VTEC light, you MUST use the pressure switch and the solenoid to power your LED...

Thanks.

i have a similar setup, but couldn't tolerate being in vtec while cruising on the freeway. i set it to 3900/4000rpm, which lets me cruise in 5th gear at 78-82mph and not be on the big lobes.
as an aside, i have noticed that at low vtec crossovers the engine makes a noticeable "clank" sound as it switches back. i didn't ever notice this before, say, when dropping from 5300rpm to 5000rpm, but perhaps that's because of greater engine noise at that speed anyway. anyone else notice this?
note : this is on a jrsc prelude (h22a). not an integra.

Hey, I've had my vtec crossover at 3K with the VPAC. Just last sunday I gave it some gas with the windows down and noticed this "clank" just as VTEC engaged. I've been freaking out ever since I heard it... so I'm actually releived to hear that I'm not the only one. Anyone have any idea what this might be?
What type of oil are you running Schwett? I'm running 5-w30, just curious if this might have something to do with it.
