Does anyone know if Vinnie was hit?

From what I heard on the news, Vinnie Paul is all right (physically). Sadly, he lost his brother, though.

yeah vinnie was shot but is ok...R.I.P Dimebag Darrel....i hda just watched bowling for columbine before i found out about this and it makes me feel even stronger about gun control in america...i really wanted to go to u.s to study drums at a good school but im getting a bit unsure now due to all this gun stuff.

S.P. please make sure you understand that increased gun control doesn't mean squat...all it will do is further restrict people like myself who are law abiding sportsman who grew up with hunting/fishing/shooting their whole lives. These scumbags will acquire guns no matter what laws exists or don't exist...increased gun control is absolutely not the answer. This is a terrible tradgedy...I hope the crowd dismembered the person so we don't have to waste a minute on him

Condolences to the families and friends...

Security at clubs will not be beefed up, and wouldn't have made much difference anyway. They were unarmed and useless against a gun wielding killer. This sort of thing will happen again and again and again....

Man, what a tragedy. I hope he continues to play. I just listened to a Pantera track called "becoming" with one of my students to analyze the double bass groove he lays down. MONSTER!! He and his brother have been a huge inspiration to a lot of players, I hope everything is OK! [img]frown.gif[/img]

This is unreal.

Just minutes ago I was looking through the new Sabian Newsbeat magazine and reading a bit about Vinnie Paul... it was nostalgic since my best friend's fave band was Pantera for the longest time and we really looked up to Darrel's guitar playing/writing, him and his brother were a dynamic duo... this is terrible news. I wonder what the motive was and also wonder how Vinnie Paul will overcome this tragedy.

Who was the other bandmember that was killed? I keep hearing different stories...3 dead, 4, 5 now... two bandmembers... terrible nonetheless.

CNN still reports that only 1 band member (dimebag) is dead.

Truly a tragedy. It's too bad they don't beef up security at these type of events. I guess since it's so rare that something like this happens though, it's unlikely.

This is the latest, sounds like Vinnie Paul wasn't shot...


Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott was shot and killed Wednesday night in a bizarre rampage during a club gig in Columbus, Ohio, that left four other people dead, including the gunman.

According to Columbus PD spokeswoman Sherry Mercurio, the shooting spree began shortly after Damageplan launched into its set at a nightspot called Alrosa Villa.

The assailant, identified as 25-year-old Nathan Gale of nearby Marysville, charged the stage, taking aim at Abbott with a silver pistol. After shooting the musician--known as "Dimebag" or "Dime" by fans--several times at point-blank range, he then began firing into the crowd before a police officer arriving on the scene shot Gale to death.

Also among the dead were two fans, Nathan Bray and Erin Halk. Authorities have not yet released the identity of the fifth victim pending notification of next of kin nor the seven others who were wounded in the attack, some of whom remain in critical condition.

Pantera's Website, www.pantera.com, which has been inundated with traffic since news of the shooting got out, initially announced that Abbott's brother, Damageplan drummer Vinne Paul Abbott, was also shot, but police chief Mercurio denied that report.

Mercurio says that a uniformed officer was patrolling the area and responded to a call at 10:18 p.m. that there was a shooting at the nightclub. A second call quickly followed, saying there was a homicide and a hostage situation.

The officer, whose name is being withheld at the moment, went in the club through the backdoor, where he saw one person lying dead on the stage and Gale allegedly holding another person in a headlock.

"He then engaged the suspect on stage, shooting and killing him," said Mercurio, adding that eyewitnesses said afterward that, "if not for the officer's quick response, the situation could have been a lot worse."

One concertgoer close to the stage when the shooting occurred told the Associated Press that he witnessed a heavyset man in a hooded sweatshirt, trailed by a bouncer and club employee, leap onstage and begin yelling at Abbott before unloading on the 38-year-old heavy-metal pioneer. After taking out Abbott, Gale then shot the bouncer who tried to tackle him, sparking mayhem in the venue.

Another audience member, Gerald Caudill, who was near the moshpit, said the gunman shot Abbott at least four times.

Word of Dimebag's death had his metal cohorts in a state of shock Thursday, among them Killswitch Engage frontman and former Damageplan tour partner, Howard Jones.

"This is insane and this is beyond travesty, beyond anything I've ever heard. This shouldn't happen in or outside of the rock and metal community. He will be missed and mourned as a person, as a musician, and as a friend."

Tom Calderone, the music network's executive vice president, added: "When you think of '90s heavy metal or hard rock, Pantera is one of these seminal bands. They are quoted today as influences by many bands. Hard rock has lost a legendary guitar player."

Just a month or so ago, I was reading about the problems Vinnie Paul had overcome, he almost lost a foot to gout and almost stopped playing altogether. So so sad...

Of course, thoughts and prayers with his their families, friends and fans...

Everyone

I talked to Vinnie at 10:30 am Central time. Vinnie is alive and uninjured. Although what he wittnessed will be with him for the rest of his life. THe bands security guy was killed, The Tour Manager was shot, and Vinnie's tech Kat was shot. There has been no word at this time as to their condition. THe gunman turned the gun on Vinnie but was out of bullets.

from what accounts i have seen, Vinnie was not shot. The gunman fired basically a clip into his brother and the other front of stage guys got hit but not life threatening.

OH NO....can't believe it. my condolences to the whole band and their families. what a tragedy.
