Steve Hass questions

Obviouisly from my posts in here you all know I'm a Hass fan mainly for his ability to play every style as well as he does.
Here are two musical questions. Has anyone been to stevehass.net and listened to the percussion intro? If so, what the hell is going on there? I can't figure it out, when I think it's in 6 then it changes.

I know it's in 7. According to an online interview I read, it was done in one take. What's the clave there? The Cascara pattern baffles me. Anyone know what's up there?

Yes I know both of those very well. I can't tell you what's going on in All The Things You Are because I'm no latin odd time afficianado. However, the intro is a bembe in 6. Hass just plays a pattern from time time that displaces the feel by and 8th note. Cool huh!

Now I think that's awesome playing. I can do without the solo at the end, nice ideas, but not really going anywhere. If it's really the first take, then I still commend HASS. That's not an easy arrangement.
What I did find though, is other track from this band CHERRY.
He puts the snare on the "one" ghosting 16th with the left hand. What a cool groove. I would have never thought of that if I was at a session. He also plays some Vinnie esque pop fills. Very nice.
Now that's what I mean by a BAD ASS. The second you think they're only good at one thing, they show you up. I don't know if anyone on this board like's that female acoustic rock thing, but HASS' playing on this track is POP perfect and very human. Nice feel.

I guess no one can figure out what's going on in the intro to HASS' site. I start counting right, and then I don't end with them. HA!
It was in my original question, but I guess either no one knows, or they didn't bother to help. Either way whatever is happening is very cool. I wonder if he's also playing percussion on it. He does both on sessions and gigs.

I will be in NYC for the holidays. Hass is at the Blue Note with ManTransfer, and then at Birdland with Janis Siegel and Alan Pasqua. What a month!

I'm going to see Janis and Pasqua. What night are you going SDK?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Hey dazzler, I'll catch you while you're here if you see this, rather than make a thread. Who's the drummer on 'strictly comedancing' with the laurie holloway orchestra? Any idea? I saw it tonight on TV, it was live.

Last time I saw it Rudy, Ralph Salmins was on drums although I know that Harold Fisher does it too. I think it's Derek Watkins and Tony Fisher on trumpets, Malcome Edmonstone on Piano(a great young guy from Scotland, who I went to college with), I think Alan Barnes plays baritone, Tara MacDonald sings and Phil Robson is on guitar, not sure of the rest of the band. It may be Dave Olney on bass.

Thanks dazzler. I caught a faint glimpse of the drummer, but couldn't tell. It did go through my mind that ralph might be doing it or even Ian thomas. Harold Fisher, now there's a name I forgot. By all accounts, he was the man doing everything before ralph came along. One of the real heavyweight session guys.

Rob, I'm not sure which night or which gig. NYC can be pretty pricey around the holidays. I may only be able to see HASS play once. I have to decide if I want to see The Manhattan Transfer or Janis Seigel's band. I love Alan Pasqua from the Tony days. I also have never seen The Manhattan Transfer. I heard Hass plays that gig like no other.
What night are you going to Birdland?

I'm thinking about going to Birdland with my wife on New Years Eve. Bringin' in the new year listening to Hassman's beat. Not a bad start. You??
I recommend seeing Janis if you can only spend the cash once. The Transfer is too show like and Steve kills it, but they don't really give the drummer some. Just on a few things here and there. Not enough time to let him really develop a solo. I thought the overall show was OK. Too much "doo bop-ing" for me.

That intro is in six. Hass loves screwing around with 6. Putting phrases of 5,7 and 9 in there as well as displacing beats.
His show at PASIC was dubbed the "the metric freak band".
That intro is fairly simple though. He just diplaces the 8th note.

I WISH I could have gone to Pasic this year. Besides Hass, Antonio Sanchez supposedly gave a great clave clinic.

I went last night, I didn't have any time to plst about it yesterday.
SDK, you're in NYC and you NEED to go. An amazing display of the ultimate combo. Multi-genre, amazing dynamics and musicality, and a blistering display of chops.
And he was playing these purple sparke fade Yamaha Maple Cutson Absolute drums. Sounded amazing.

Alright, I gotta get a CD with Steve on it. what's your favorite?

I listened to some sampls of his Travler album. Sounded pretty good! Alot of diffrent styles in it.

Derek, it depends on what you like.
Hass is a musical prostitute, like Colaiuta in a way.
I wouldn't buy Vinnie with Celine Cion or Michele Branch.
I wouldn't be into alot of what Hass is on either. You know, money sessions.
I like Matthew Parrish's Circle for the swing and great musical solos. Manhattan Vibes for the broken grooves and latin grooves. And Traveler for the simpleness and musicality. Also Ravi Coltrane's Mad Six is a great one.
What are you into??

I've got Ravi Coltrane's Mad Six...it's a great listen...lots of good drumming on that recording.

oooohhhhh. Mad Six is a great CD for those jazz heads out there. Lot's of great intereraction and lot's of drumming
