Just a thought for conversation!

I wonder if Weckl felt sort of "left out" and hurt that he was not asked to be apart of the ADAA Awards for Gadd last year.I understand that Zildjian was like co-sponsor
of the event,but weren't they celebrating Gadd's contribution to music and the drums in general.Weckl gives Gadd all kinds of accolades for being an influence on him.That would have been killer to see a "reunion" of the famous drum trio from the BRMC from '89.Gadd would have been playing his one groove that he knows and Vinnie would have smoked both of 'em again!! That's why he's the best EVER!

it was zildjians event entirely....couldn't have had a sabian guy there.

I think it's a shame Weckl wasn't there. If there was ever anyone who has followed in Gadd's footsteps, it's Dave for sure. He will be the first to tell you how much of an influence Gadd has been on his playing.

This is the part of the industry that really pisses me off. If the event is really about Gadd, why not have perhaps his greatest "student" participate? I find it hypocritical on the part of the equipment companies that continually blow smoke about "the drumming community," "our drumming family," "the most important thing is the music," etc. when they really mean "our endorser community," or or "the most important thing is our logo."

I know Johnny D. checks this board from time to time. He personally put a lot into making this event happen and I certainly don't want to belittle his efforts.

But consider the perspective of the drumming community: if I play Pro-Mark sticks am I not allowed to be a fan of Steve Smith's because he plays Vic Firth? Is Gregg Bissonette not allowed to say Jeff Porcaro was a huge influence because he played Paiste cymbals?

It all seems silly to me.

I applaud PE's candid response on the other thread about Argent cymbals. Thanks, Peter, for the example of integrity and professionalism!!

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Well, those three guys respect each other. One is not trying to "smoke" the other one. Far from it. Steve Gadd doesn't sit in his drum chair "sweating", worried about Vinnie's hot chops. This is almost laughable. They all have a mutual admiration for each others playing.

Vinnie and Dave have said they really wouldn't be playing the way they do without STEVE GADD being around.

Steve Gadd has one groove he knows? lol. You do not know much at all about Steve Gadd. Homework time.

Gadd's "solo's" at the '89 Buddy Rich Memorial were some of the most musically rhythmic chops I've heard. They were just plain COOL-sounding.

It does suck that Dave wasn't involved with the Gadd tribute.

Okay, i respect the fact that Zildjian who's hosting the show and puts alot of commercial effort in making this tribute possible denies endorsers from a competing brand to have their products visible, without Sabian having any economical involment in the project.

However i do find it pretty tasteless that Weckl weren't granted an offer ( Because i will be 100% sure he would accept it out of endorsement ) to do an Interview, so he could participate in the Documentary. It Would make the Documentary complete with the greatest student telling a story about the lessons etc. Weckl doesn't need to sit in front of a big sign with Sabian on it, just like Eric C. doesn't sit with a big Fender Brand T-shirt or something like that.

However to Zildjians defense, Rick Marottas playing was a nice contrast to the rest of the show. He did a very good job!

One other thought, i think Dave Weckls cymbals of Choice in the 80's and 90's was a huge commercial Success for Zildjian.. I Wonder if they, out of endorsement, gonna give him an ADAA someday..

I see what you are saying, but the bottom line for me is simply this: the "ultimate" tribute to Steve Gadd has Dave Weckl playing in it.

If Weckl can't play because he endorses Sabian, then why not call the event, "Zildjian Drummers Pay Tribute to Steve Gadd," which is what it really is?
