While still living in Zurich, Switzerland I went to see Metallica perform. Godsmack played before them.
Since Im in the library I cant watch the vid, but what I saw was the actual drummer and the singer facing each other will playing a drum solo.
It was cool, but seemed strange at the time. The singer had this whole percussion set and was playing very basic stuff for the most part. It just didnt go along with what they had played before - But still a creative idea for a live gig in front of something like 25.000 people.
One thing I remember is that they were loud...I could feel the vibrations of the drummer's bass drum in my hair! Whenever he played a stroke my hair would vibrate a bit - Crazy stuff.

WOW that was awsome. Godsmacks musical director, the tour producer and records execs sure put together one awsome drum solo. The crowd could really rock to it.

It was allright AFA this type of thing [genre] goes...
As I was watching the clip, I was saying to myself, "very Neil-ish" [many of the licks from both guys, but esp the percussionist]. Then, they segued into the "Neil homage" section towards the end, which made sense. Befitting.
I did think it was kinda neat.
But it is funny how it's obvious anymore that the record company suits have their subordinates neck deep in the putting together & presentation of this stuff, as opposed to the orig intent of this kind of music, which was very raw, sincere, & un-corporate. Almost as if they have their own consulting firm departments in on it - "What You Need to do in a Huge, Live Pop-Rock Show Formula, Inc."... Or is it just the cynic in me. [img]wink.gif[/img]
As silly as it may sound to some, the clips I've seen of Ashbaugh & the Sync dude are not bad. Billy is a good player, of course. Even the phrasing style of the voc trades [as ] is interesting enough [aft a listen or 2, once I got past the initial shock of the kiddie contempo sound of it at first listen ;c)]. [img]redface.gif[/img] Billy makes it worth listening to for me. I'm sure a million teenage girls would disagree [img]tongue.gif[/img] ...Altho nowadays it's prob even unfashionable for teenagers to even like Sync, the way this stuff goes [changing on a dime w todays jaded & increasingly hard-to-impress-or-shock teens]...pre-teens, maybe... I see what you mean. I just feel that beat-boxing (emulating drum sounds with your mouth) is something that has been used far too much. Personally I find it a clown act of him. This started with rap music and thats where it should stay in my opinion.

I thought it was quite entertaining, seeing the vocalist and drummer from a metal band go at it. They did exactly what they should have done for their audience, it was right up their alley and i think it was pretty cool in that context. Just another reminder to me that i can get a kick out of something that isn't a chops-fest. [img]cool.gif[/img]

Plus the vocalist didn't do too shabby playing the drums... when he mentioned he played drums, i didn't give it too much cred. He could play for alot of the bands out there (in this genre) and be better than what they have already... as far as metal bands and hard rock bands on the radio, i think he would be BETTER than 80% of their drummers!

WOW. THAT WAS FANTASTIC! i wouldn't rip on the bassist that much. frankly i though he did a really good job. i loved the whole piece from beginning to end. it really held onto me and homages towards the end (which i loved the most) was just great. very inspiring. yeah, i didn't know sully was such a great player. their groove at the beginning was so tasteful. i love how shannon incorporated the octoban during that initial groove and ended each phrase with a china. really hooky. kudos to both. i've never heard godsmack's stuff before, but this solo really makes me want to get the dvd of this show. i believe i read a MD update where shannon actually left the band a while ago. perhaps he's back.
lastly, wasn't their rythm section just tight? i thought they were great as well.

The band sounded well rehearsed... catchy for that genre of music. I saw them live once, but i don't remember... that was in my havin' too much fun days, er, daze... [img]confused.gif[/img]
And as for Chris... i am a vampire, my neighbors love my 2am drum practice sessions. Thank God they do alot of meth or else they might have the mind to call the police on me [img]tongue.gif[/img]
