Personally, I was a bit shocked at hearing that an earthquake was to blame for the whole thing. I just assumed that Yngwie was doing cannonballs into the ocean again. Go figure. [img]wink.gif[/img]

Even if you are not there right now, or know somebody there, it is still one of the worst (if not THE worst) catastrophe of our time, and at the same time a fascinating disaster. In my mind, when hearing of massive floods, you think of torential rains, but instead it looked like a beautiful day, and then this nightmare stepped in.Quote:

I agree, Carl, this catastrophe was huge. That said, prayers aside, there's nothing we can really do with talking about it. Does anybody here know anyone in that area that might have been directly affected by this occurence? Yes, these sort of things cause a lot of pain but is there anything we can really do to prevent them? No, there isn't. It sucks, sure. Death isn't fun especially when on a scale such as this. The last thing I want is this turning into a political discussion of either, 'how we can go in and fix the countries where this happened' or 'how we can construct giant walls on our beaches so this never happens here'. This was, for all intents and purposes, a fluke. I wouldn't mind going in with the Red Cross and such to help the victims, but I don't think I will. Anybody here planning on doing that?
I'm surprised it wasn't mentioned here, as this board is pretty worldly and knowledgable about most things, and seem to have some compassion about what happens in the world. Myself....I'm almost speechless. I can't believe how much the death toll is rising each day, and I hear that it will double because of the spread of disease. Brutal. Me living on the coast, am kinda familiar with Tsunamis. We have had Tsunami warnings here before but it's been a few years now. The last one was laughable, because the warning came, everyone hit the hills, and I guess the actual "tsunami" was about 2 feet high.
I think the earthquake that caused that one was pretty far out though, and our coastline is very gradual going out into the ocean, so you wouldn't think that it would be possible to have a huge Tsunami here, unless the quake was right offshore. It's weird seeing pics of it on TV. It looks like everything happened in slow motion, but the devastation is unbelievable. It affects virtually every nation evidently. The one thing that pisses me off is that we (USA) have immediately donated $35 million, and many people have volunteered to go over and help, yet we are getting criticized for being stingy. That sucks.
Saying "not our problem" would be stingy. I would say $35 million, and many volunteers is generous.
I'm surprised it's taken this long for it to be mentioned. Not being anti-American here, but such a big deal was made out of 9/11, this kinda puts things into perspective. Before anyone says it, I know 9/11 was preventable, and this to a degree wasn't, although more warning could've been given to certain areas. I was starting to think Americans are kept in the dark about happenings outside their country, or maybe a little ignorance, but this thread has restored my faith.
In case you forgot, Andy Fridayz Angel went to Thailand for the holidays, but thankfully he's reported in safe. Unlike many many tourists which go there for Xmas and New Year.
A $35 million donation by Mr Bush is very noble, but if the little UK can pledge ?50 million already, maybe he can think about upping his offer.
People can still die many thousands of miles from the quake, you don't have to be that close. The waves travelled right across the Indian Ocean and killed people on the East African coastline as well. If something similar happened off the coast of Japan, the US Pacific coast would suffer. The force of this quake actually wobbled the whole planet an inch.
This disaster is the 5th worst in modern history, at the moment.

I'm very shocked. Thailand was paradise on Earth,people fucking incredible. And its terrible thinking that lovely people I met there now can be dead. Well dont misunderstood me. Im shocked for EVERYONE, but over all when I know some of the places.

My cousin works out in in Africa, seemingly that got hit by a wave too, south coast. Shows you the power of the whole thing.

I don't think we should avoid this topic for political reasons, Lycan. It's not like this was a terrorist act, unless you have found Mother Nature to be funding the IRA or something, or maybe God truely is on Bin Laden's side and is doing his/her/it's own act of terror. But this was nature, and politics has no part in this yet. In a few weeks, months, whatever, if the US has still only coughed up $35 million, then it is time for critiscm (though I do have my beliefs on it already a bit), but until then, we all would be wise to just think about the suffering and not point any fingers. I have heard that the US needs to get the "O.K." on getting more money first, and that the $35 million drained our "disaster fund". I expect the US to spend much, much more though.
I did not know Andy was over there! Good to know he is O.K.! I forget that his wife is from Asia. Hopefully they are not effected more than all of us.
I have waited on posting about this just out of wondering if somebody else was going to. But finally I couldn't let it go any longer. This doesn't need to be a debate thread, it could just be for passing info on. I never knew how a tsunami worked until this, and I do find them fascinating. We can just talk about the tragedy and what went on, and the after effects, without having political parties. I am sure that earthquake was non-partisan.
My heart is filled with so much sadness at the loss of over 100.000 lives here.There's no words 2 describe this, and I cant even start 2 imagine the sadness of people who lost loved ones there.Even whole families were lost,1 family lost 55 members.I checked on Finnish website 4 pictures of Finnish people missing, and there's nobody I know personally,but lot of faces staring back at me,who may be lost 4ever.Famous musician Aki Sirkesalo is missing,and it is said there really is not much hope 4 him 2 be found alive.And thousands of others in other countries.Sorrow,so sad.
So please peeps, please give some money 2 Red Cross or other charities helping out at the disaster areas. Please.
Yeah, I neglected to mention that the $35 million drained our disaster fund, and I don't really want to get into that too much, because as a nation, I think the US usually goes out of their way to help other countries in difficult situations...and like Carl said, I think there will probably be more coming.
Stacey....no we are not kept in the dark about happenings outside of our country. Quite the opposite actually. Here at our business, we have a TV in the waiting area, and we keep it on FOX news all day, every day, and they really haven't stopped showing it and talking about it since it happened. It sucks though. I guess I just didn't have anything to add. I think the pictures and death toll speak for themselves. Terrible tragedy.
BTW, I don't think I'll be moving to the Yangtze River area anytime soon.

It's not time to show who has bigger balls. All this bitching about the US should do this or that is getting old. Supposedly we have all this money - just ask all of us who live here. We roll around in gold daily. I feel so bad for those people - especially the children. Unfortunately I don't have the money to spare. Maybe we should be pointing the finger at Bill Gates and other billionaires.
I think it's wrong that there are so many that have so much and there are so many more that have nothing.
I don't think this is comparable to 9/11. Lots of people died. But there's no way to keep this from happening again.
