Drum Magazine has this incredible, amazing article about Steve Vai?s drummers. He talks about Mangini,Castronovo,Bozzio and Colaitua.
The part were he talks about Colaiuta is just insane, I wish someone had that taped.

Does anyone know who will be Vai's drummer on the current tour in March?
-
Jeremy Colson is Vai's touring drummer these days.
Reg. the Vai article on drummers, there's also a great bit on the Astoria live DVD on the commentary track where Vai speaks about Virgil during his solo. He mentions the fact that Mangini proclamed it has damaged him to be on tour with Vai, and that Virgil would nail everything, including the grueling 2? hrs+ soundcheck and then a 2 hour show, + he would be likely to warm up on his own for an hour or 2 prior to soundcheck. That apparently boosted a ton of respect from Vai to Virgil.

Yeah,
Great story that, I think that's been posted here in the past... He's a legend.
Also nice to hear Toss Panos getting a heads-up. What are his best recordings?

I really love the Mike Landau Trio live album with Toss Panos and Jimmy Johnson - haven't listened to it in a while but it was ever out of my cd player for about 2 years.
Mike Keneally & Beer for Dolphins Half Alive in Hollywood is tremendous too but it may be a little trickier to get hold of.

I remember reading an interview with Terry Bozzio where he talked about leaving Franks band.
He left thinking 'well I'd like to see who they get in to replace me!!!'
...and then in comes vinnie, it would make you sick!!!
Terry went onto say Vinnie was '10 times the drummer he was'!!!
as a side note...
when i was a kid I wrote to Frank Zappa and told him how much I liked his music and how my birthday was coming up...etc
...and he actually wrote back sending me a signed photo wishing me a happy birthday! I could not believe it!!!
a few weeks later he sent me another signed photo with a note saying he wasn't sure if I'd got the first one!!!
