Double Bass Drummers new and old

Hey guys!

Happy New Years to all.

On another post, I remembered Mark Cranny, and what a great contribution he's made to drumming over the years. The stuff he recorded with Gino Vanelli on Brother to Brother and Jethro Tull on the "A" for Anderson tour still rock my world to this day. 1st left handed DBL Bass drummer I had ever seen that just ripped it up!!

Just curious to know what's everyones favorite pics are regarding drummers that were well known for their DBL Bass techniques (i.e. Peart, Tommy Aldridge, Louis Bellson, Bissonette, and others) and your recommended listening material to buy.

-j

My favorite old school double bass drum performances would be...

Billy Cobham w Mahavishnu Orchestra 'One Word' and 'Birds of Fire'
Ian Paice w Deep Purple 'Fire Ball'
Terry Bozzio w Zappa 'Yo Mama'
Narada Michael Walden w Robert Fripp on the album Discipline
Simon Phillips w Jeff Beck 'Space Boogie'
Alex Van Halen 'Hot For Teacher'

for starters...

When you said, "Just curious to know what's everyones favorite pics are regarding drummers" did you mean, picks?...not "pictures" right--I have those too!

Gotta go with Virgil on Planet X's CD Universe titled, "Dog Boots"

Oh...must always mentioned Tommy Aldrich from Pat Travers Band--"Boom Boom Out Goes the Lights" The DB work on that tune blew me away as a kid.

Terry Bozzio: Frank Zappa's "Baby Snakes" DVD, plus his early instructional videos

Dave Lombardo: any early Slayer CD

Gregg Bissonette: David Lee Roth's first solo CD

Randy Castillo: Ozzy's "No Rest for the Wicked"

Tommy Aldridge: early Ozzy, Black Oak Arkansas, and Pat Travers

Ok, lock & load... i am ready for the firing squad, but i am gonna say it anyway.

Lars, ...And Justice for All.

The only mainstream, recognizable double bass parts for an average listener, that i can think of:
Alex on 'Hot for Teacher' and Lars on 'One'.
I know Lars doesn't do what the other players listed here can do (or what many of the people who post here can do), but i have to say that there was some cool sounding double bass parts on there. They make me wanna air-drum on the pedals!
There is something to be said when something like double pedals, blasting away can make a memorable part for even someone who doesn't know what a double kick part is. Even though those songs were lucky and become popular, i still think it is an important part(s) since you could stop someone on the street and ask them about it and they would know what you are talking about, "... you know, the 'duga-duga' part!"

I bet my mom would even know that section to 'One' that Lars plays on the kicks... and therefore, that is an important double bass pattern.

... She still thinks there is something wrong with the speakers everytime i play her 'Dog Boots'... guess she isn't ready for Virgil quite yet

Yeah, I was going to add Lars - his early work with Metallica was pretty important stuff. Love him or hate him, the man helped create a genre.

Mr. A.

Geez, no Vinnie Paul or Gene Hoglan to be found...

THose two guys are about the best db drummers I've ever heard. And they're heavy as hell...

They do indeed weigh alot, you are right benrand

I know, i know... i had to!

Mr. A,
You said it better in two sentences than i did in five paragraphs
...so yeah, ditto what you said!

Yeah, those two guys can really lay into a groove and give it heft and weight.

They probably go through thrones like you and I go through sticks or snare heads.

Yeah, the Blue Tav disc...the tune Tsunami, perhaps [if mem serves me on the song title]?

Rod Morg. with Dregs & Stv Morse Band.
1 tune in partic: Cruise Missile off SMB The Introduction, which Virg later covered on the Loose Change Live Grainstore release. It is based on the now-infamous Cob DB shuffle.

Yeah, it was Captured [live Smith solo].

Ditto Scott Travis & Deen.

Check Racer X Live Extreme Volume for a bad-axe ST chops-fest rock drum solo [pre-Virg, of course - fuhgittabowdit, Dazzo! ].

Deen on MacAlpine's Maximum Security. [Also, Cacaupohony & Wild Dogs, so I've heard]. He smoked some searyass arse when i saw him playg to tracks in clinic back in the very late 80s / early 90's.

Yep - Aldridge on the Travers Live '79 "Go For What You Know," w [Boom Boom-] Out Go the Lights.

Ditto Simon w the Beck [There & Back] - Space Boogie. Both Rod & Si credited Boomer Cob for their DB shuf.

Ditto VPaul, Hoglan, Agren, Haake, Jarz, Boz, GCollins, Roddy [got to hang briefly w him at a drum store - nice cat. He digs Wreckl, Vinnie, & Virg for shore, too. Duh, go figure ]. Good list, FlamT.

& yes, I have to give it to "Livin' Lar[ge]s" for the DB triplets [sextuplets] then snare in One.
"*Szhuggeda-szhuggeda-BAP! Szhuggeda-szhuggeda-BAP!*" [Was this pre-ProTools, BTW?!]

Anyone know the CD i'm talking about?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">'BLUE TAV' !! Vinnie completely shreds on that cd, the man himself considers it to be some of his best recorded work !

Of oldschool DB drummers I find Louie Bellson, Simon Phillips, Bobby Rondinelli and Mike Portnoy to be some of the best.
The new school of DB drummers were led at some point by Tim Alexander, but now guys like Marco Minnemann, Thomas Lang and ofcourse the maestro Virgil Donati are worth checking out. Virgil is lightyears beyond the others as far as imagination and execution goes.

Vinnie Colaiuta on Megadeth - The System has Failed !!!!!

Portnoy old school? (I never thought I'd live to hear that statement)

Hey Skunk,- I suspected that someone would notice that remark. I don't mean to disrespect him, but Even though he has done alot of doublebassdrumming, I honestly don't think that he MUSICALLY has done a great deal for the genre.

Barrimore Barlow, with Jethro Tull,
on "Quiz Kids", from 'Too Old To Rock
and Roll'.

Vinnie's playing on that Megadeth album is awful.

Too poppy, not metal enough. He can play wierd changes better than most, but that band had Gar Samuelson, Menza and other crazy drummers. He didn't take it out enough, like he can.

I was just listening to it today...bleh. Why did he decide to use that ride?

Pete, I think I heard dbl bass first from Clive Bunker.

An underrated drummer FOR SURE.

Does anyone know if Blue Tav is still available commercially?

Clive was awesome too, Benrand!

As a matter of fact, I will sample
some of his stuff soon, so we can all
appreciate him and the beginning of
the incredible Tull legacy in drums.

Here's a guy you NEVER hear of...Les Binks! The Live in Japan Judas Priest is awesome with Les. He is a machine on that LP--smooth and refined, he plays well orchestrated DB parts.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Yeah, i bet. I haven't listened to it. It was kinda a joke to show the amount of stuff Vinnie is involved - fusion to metal. Yeah, but he can't be that versitile... hehehe

Flo Mounier
Thomas Haake
Virgil Donati are my favourites...

Every 'Vinnie' fan should own this one.

Haake is pretty damn sick.

I listened to more of that Megadeth disc and it sounds like the drummer from Sting's band played on it...too damn poppy. But, that's probably why he was hired.
