I HAD $40!!!! SOO I HAD TO BUY ACESSRIES!!!!! IT MADE ME SOOOOOOO MAD [img]mad.gif[/img] I BUY CLOTHES OTHER PLACES AND THEY ARE ONLY LIKE 10 BUCKS EACH AND THEY AREB REALLY WELL MADE ALSO!!!!!!!
If I was you, I would get the doll clothes at Target or Walmart. The Our Generation clothes and Tolly clothes are fine especially if you don't have much money. I have bought several outfits there and I am very happy with them.

Have you checked out the American Girl Online Club? My daughter is too young for it right now, but you can chat with others and collects starts or points. You can redeem the stars for items, and they have a special club outfit for dolls.
Again, I don't know a lot about it, but it might be worth checking out! I know others here have more experience with it. Good Luck!

I am new to AG too. My daughter got Kirsten for Christmas. I have bought so far only one of Kirsten's AG dresses.Of course I do want more AG dresses. But my daughter has enjoyed getting outfits from Target and Walmart. SO I say use your money for the cheaper outfits. They are nice too. But maybe ask your family to buy you the AG gifts for special times.
I think that you have to look at each outfit abd determine how hard ir is to make. How many seams pleats and ruffles. The historical outfits for Samantha Nellie and Kirsten are well worth the money because of the detail. Another place to look for doll clothes is at craft fairs.
You do not need a sewing machine to make doll clothes . Some of the contemporary clothe are easy to make.
Nelliemarie, I suggest what another mom here suggested and sign up for the American Girls Club. My 10 year-old daughter did that too, just two days ago. You'll meet tons of girls just like you! (We love having you visit these boards of course, and hope you keep doing so, but for even more fun, go to the AG website, click on Club, and ask your mom to help enroll you!)
If I were you, I would look at my budget, then at all the AG clothes and say, "Ok, which AG outfits do I want the most?" Then i would buy, say, my favorite 2 AG outfits, then spend the rest of my $$ on Target outfits ( which, I must say, are a good buy because they're decent quality for a good price ) Then, when you get more money, you can do that again, picking and choosing which AG outfits you like best and buying Target outfits the rest of the time. Target doll clothes are nice, but not all of them fit AG. Sometimes you have to cut the hem to let the hands through or cut the back of the shoes to let the feet in. I don't know about their most recent clothes though. Maybe they have improved.

VERY few of the Wal-Mart and Target doll clothes fit the AG dolls well. I have several outfits from both stores for my Target Our Generation doll, and frankly, the quality on them is terrible. I almost feel like I'm wasting my money on them, but my AG clothes are too big for my Target doll and look really bad on her.
The AG clothes, for the most part, are worth every penny. They are some of the most well made that I have ever seen and they stand up very well to play and lots of clothes changing.

I too have been VERY disappointed with the quality & fit of the Target, Walmart & Toys R Us clothes for the 18 in dolls (AG of course). I think they are actually harder for young girls (4 &5) to deal with because of at least my daughters will try very hard to make them 'fit' - which is not only resulted in ripped clothing but rough treatment of the dolls themselves...
I would advise you to make sure that you take the clothing out of the packaging very gently - on the basis that the clothes may not fit & that is just like throwing your cash away.
I have been extremely impressed with the quality of the AG clothes that we have purchased to date & refuse to purchase anything else (With the possible exception of home made ones - which are usually first rate in quality).
Keep an eye on this board for 'special' codes that let you get more bang for your buck & then of course there used to be the great clearances - but well, THANKS to NELLIE [img]wink.gif[/img] haven't come out this year...
I too think that AG clothes are very high quality overall and worth the price, especially on the very detailed outfits. Basic outfits for Felicity and Samantha without much frills can be made easily and cheaply, but the more embellishments and detail, the more expensive and time consuming it is to make them and so they're really worth their cost. I don't buy for AGT so I haven't tried any of the Target or Walmart clothes. I have bought from the Dollies Dressmaker and her stuff is, IMO, even better than AG. But it's even more expensive, because of the detail and quality of the fabrics.
I've seen some cute OK doll clothes on other websites and on ebay, and I've bought a couple of them. They're a little cheaper than AG, and they're OK, but the fabric is not as high quality and they aren't as sturdy. You have to be a little careful with them. Some don't fit quite right. But they are cheaper, and they are modeled after AG clothes. Let me know if you want some websites and I'll post them.

I wouldn't mind having some Dollies Dressmaker outfits, particularly for Samantha (who's coming here in March) and for Molly. I love the actual reproductions she does for Molly and Kit.
I don't know about AGT, but the historical clothing for the most part, is worth it.
I think it is worth the money, especially the historical clothing. I would rather have one item that I really love, than two that are just okay. I'm like that with everything. I was married for three years before I found drinking glasses that I really loved. We were using jelly jars, and mismatched hand me downs until then, because I won't spend a dime on anything I didn't really love. That's also why we have no dining room chairs.

I'm not sure where, when, why, or how the typing in caps became shouting?
Yet I never think (assume) of it as shouting because there are so many who are new computer persons out there that just don't or really never typed before owning one.

I don't know when writing in caps became shouting, but I've been taught that ever since I started chatting many moons ago. I think that it was easiest to just say - normal talk in normal print - and shouting in all caps to show your frustration etc.
On the subject of whether the AG dresses are worth their money, I think they are. As said before they are well made and especially with the historicals the details are wonderful. You also need to consider the work time to put into a small garment. It's often easier sewing for children and grown ups as there aren't as many tiny corners etc. The smaller items you sew, the more difficult it can be.
I rather buy one good product I really like than just something cheap to have something there. I know what you mean ubarose, e.g. I had my "russian chandelier" (just a light bulb) in my toilet for years, before I found the perfect lamp and it has special meaning to me, as I found it on one of my trips to Italy a few years ago while I was in Venice.
Bunny, do you have needlework or whatever it's called in American Schools, where you learn to sew, knit and crochet? When I was in school we had it as of the 1st year of primary/elementary school. I know looking at some of the pieces produced then they are terrifying to look at now, but it was well worth learning how to do it. You could always start making your own doll dresses, and then they're very special too. I know, I was about 13/14 when I made my own doll dresses for my dolls, it was fun trying different things. I used my grandma's old sewing machine - the ones you still had to get into motion by moving the pedal and to make sure the wheel moves into the right direction.
Miki, needlework is a dying art over here! Machine sewing is taught in some schools, but that's about it. I taught myself to emroider and cross-stitch, my sister sorta taught herself to knit and our grandmother taught us how to crochet.
The all caps as shouting came about when AIM first started getting popular. I'm on many many message boards, and I personally don't like it when people use tons of IM shorthand on message boards. The basic stuff like LOL, IMO, and our eBay abbreviations don't bother me, but the constant mis-spelling and phonetic spelling of words bothers me a great deal.

I make extra money selling handmade Christmas ornaments around this time of year. There are many recipes for simple to make gingerbread ornaments, and people love them! I sell mine for $2-3 a piece, and you can make a lot of money that way!
Do you get an allowance? Could you do extra chores to help your parents around the house to earn more? I also started doing dishes and laundry to earn more AG money. It is a bummer that everything is so expensive, though!
It does seem expensive when you are a kid. Even as an "adult" I still think $20 is a lot of money. I never buy clothing that costs that much for myself even. But I do think with AG they are worth it, esp since I am sewing-challenged. Is there anyone in your family that sews? Maybe they would be willing to make you/or help you make some doll clothes...there are so many patterns out there. Otherwise, you might have to figure out some extra ways to make money or just be patient saving an allowance. When I was 12 I saw something in a store I really wanted...it was in a statue shop in Miami and was most likely a one of a kind thing. I only had $5 and it cost $20. There was no chance of us going back to the store for a while so my Dad cut me a deal...he'd buy the statue for me and use my $5 if I washed all of the windows on the front of the house inside and out. It was little extra things like that that helped me save $ for Ag or whatever else I wanted.

The first rule of typing that everybody should be aware of is that writing IN CAPITALS MAKES IT LOOK LIKE YOU'RE SHOUTING. Yes, the price of AG clothes is worth it, but try to shop the sales if you can.
I have bought other brands and home sewn clothes, but none of them satisfy me the way the real AG ones do.
I would rather have one AG outfit than 2 or 3 Target outfits. Try to watch for the monthly AG specials or outfits on clearance on the website.
For me, it is about quality over quantity. Since you are only 11, you have years ahead of you to collect. I would be happy getting just 2 or 3 new outfits per year.

Some of the clothes are worth it and some are just ordinary. Personally I think Molly's aviator jacket is worth more than the price but I would say a lot of the dresses are made of thin fabric and not really worth it. I would purchase one Target and one AG outfit. Think long and hard about the AG outfit you want. Then after having both you can make a decision about future purchases. My niece had Samantha. Besides her meet dress she had all non AG dresses and enjoyed her doll immensely. My other niece has Kit and has 1/2 and 1/2. She enjoys both kinds of outfits. My daughter will most likely just have AG brand. I doubt she will get any more enjoyment out of her AG collection as my nieces. But it is fun to have the dresses that match the story. But I fully believe you don't need AG brand; except the doll.
