Did AG ever do a *design-your-own* doll?

I nearly got into an argument with a friend of mine over this (LOL, not really; I am not the argumentative type. But I did really press the issue). She swears that the company did and does offer the ability to choose the hair color, eye color, etc. of your doll. I told her that it is true that they offer a selection of dolls with different combinations, but that you have to choose from one of the dolls offered, and you cannot choose a specific combination. I asked her if maybe she was thinking of My Twinn, but she insisted that you could do this through AG too! Then my sister (who was there) wouldn't back me up. I was getting frustrated, so I dropped it [img]wink.gif[/img] .

AG does it the McDonald's way, you pick your doll from their current menu, configured as they make her. MyTwinn does it the Burger King way, you pick the features you want on your doll and they make her to order.

I would dearly love to see AG provide MyTwinn-like customization for AGoT dolls, but have never seen any indication that such is in their plans.

I also had a similar conversation/argument with a friend one time over the dress like your doll issues. She kept insisting that you could dress like Samantha and I said no, except for her nightgown. She was talking about all the AGT clothes only, and didn't even realize that Samantha was a historical doll, she didn't know there were differences between them and the AGT's and I guess had never noticed that the historicals had their own "individual" line of period clothes or their books. Talk about not paying attention.

The confusion might be that they consider the today doll a "just like me" doll. Although none of them really look like Kaitlin. Laurie, maybe your friend was talking about the fact that they use to make historical girl size clothing. But maybe she is just confused with today girl stuff. I can see why the company just makes today girl stuff. I think mothers are more likely to invest in an outfit that they can wear a lot. A lot of the historical clothes is not appropriate for most occassions.

Personally even the MyTwinn doll has set face molds and hair eye color stuff. None of the face molds looks like my daughter at all.

Yes, MyTwinn dolls scare me, too. I had one made to look like I did when I was 8 and didn't like it and then what do you do with it???? (picture eerie music in the background) I finally donated her to a PBS auction in hopes that a good deed would protect me from any future consequences. What if someone decided to smash my lookalike's head with a hammer? What would happen to me?

Actually whoever said you could dress like your historical doll was correct. Pleasant Co. began their "dress like your doll" line of children's clothing with girl-sized replicas of all the original outfits from Sam, Kirsten, Molly, Felicity and Addy. There were Meet dresses, school dresses, nightgowns and playtime dress-alikes. I think these are still included in the AG Fashion shows. In 1995 when the AG of Today was introduced, the line between whose clothes copies whose became blurred. There were a lot of clothes for girls that were never made in doll size. Now it appears that AG is concentrating on bringing out new matching outfits for girls AND AGTs and none of the original clothing for the historical dolls is sold in girl size anymore.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">Ooooh, I so agree. MyTwinn dolls have a characteristic "stare" that really creeps me out. There was a discussion of this sometime back and one of the members said that all dolls "stare" -- to which I vehemently disagreed, saying that my dolls did not have that look at all.

I was challenged and took pictures of all of my dolls, essentially police department mugshots, which should show the stare at its worst. As you can see from my Doll Mugshots album, AG and AG-like dolls do not share this very off-putting characteristic...

Oh, yes. I agree. The My Twinn dolls are scary to me too. I keep picturing me waking up from a nightmare and watching the doll staring at me with those strange eyes and grinning. AHH!! That would be truly scary!

I used to get freaked out by dolls too! Quite honestly, I'm only "good" with American Girl and the GOML line of dolls, lol. I don't have any other types so far, and I don't think it's likely that I will. Probably still traumatized from the "Child's Play" movie that came out when I was just a little kid. <giggle>

Yes, this wasn't my only experience in talking with someone who didn't believe me on some AG thing. I just want to say *Listen, you are talking to one obsessed AG fan!!* I certainly don't know everything about AG, but I probably know more than I should (what with all the things I could be doing around the house, that is).
Also, I was wondering about the My Twinn dolls; I have played around with the online *creation* system and have never come up with anything that really made me happy. I was wondering if they were cuter in person. My DDs have zero interest in them, so it is good to hear some opinions on them.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">It's amazing how many people substitute "Samantha" for "Any American Girl product ever made". I keep seeing listings on eBay for "Samantha doll with blue eyes" or "Native American Samantha doll."

I hope I do not offend anyone when I say that the My twinn dolls actually scare me. I think its their eyes and their size. I was just looking at the catalog and I found them to be kinda creepy. But the chosing of the doll thing reminded me of a doll from the 80's, My Child, which I got for christmas one year and to this day I still have her. The only thing that resembles me is her eyes. My mom said she looked for hours in the store for the right doll for me- funny how much things have changed! [img]graemlins/sun.gif[/img]
