Well, I don't know about you
but Johnny Carson was a huge
part of my life as a drummer.
On his show, I saw Buddy Rich,
Louis Bellson and Ed Shaugnessy.
An incredible big band that I
think will always be a stand-
ard, played dedicatedly.
So many great shows and memor-
ies... I'll never forget him.
RIP, Johnny.

This show was probably a little before my time. But judging by the guests you just mentioned it must have been terrific. Chin up Peter!

Johnny WAS a drummer...
Actress Diane Cannon said that Johnny loved two things more than anything,
'Playing drums and eating popcorn'...

Buddy Rich was on the show a bunch of times -- I wish his appearances were collected somewhere. That would make a fun watch!
-
Along w Buddy, Louie, & Ed, I also rem seeing comedian Charlie Callas play drums on the show a couple of times...actually, I think my 1st exposure to Buddy & Louie were FROM that show.
...the "JC was a drummer" thing, yes...if you think about it, when the show would come back from commercial breaks, Johnny was always tapping his pencil on his cup or desk along to the band...
RIP

Johnny was part of our drumming breatheren. I will sadly miss him.
I got to meet "Johnny" along with Jay Leno once many years ago at the Bob's Big Boy drive in's Fiday night car show/hang. Jay being a huge car nut was drooling over my 69 Pro-Street Camaro, and it turns out Johnny owned a 69 GTO similar to mine. I got to talk to him about his and buddies friendship over the years and his love for drumming. I thought he was a very approachable and down to earth guy. Gave me his full attention unlike some celebrities I've met.
Here's a beer for Johnny for Johnny. May he rest in peace.

Sorry to hear about it guys,
I know he was a bit of a legend over there in the States.

I have to chime in. Johnny was the quintessential talk show host; period. My draw to Johnny was the fact that for the most part, he had guests that HE enjoyed and respected and hoped that the viewing audience would as well. It made his Tonight Show personal, with his unique stamp. I don't get that feeling with Jay "Chin-o".
Johnny and Buddy had a tight relationship. If I'm not mistaken, he owned one of Buddy's kits.
He was sadly missed when he left the air; and now, more so.

I remember vividly even today being so excited to catch The Tonight show even as a young teenager. Apart from regularly having great musicians on the show, Carson was a comedic Genius for sure. Just like Letterman has said
"We who have followed after Johnny are all Pretender's compared to him"

Carson would joke he wasn't the best drummer, (I knew one of his writers) but his passion for music was boundless. Anyone in L.A. knows the jazz station 88.1 KLON. Carson was a massive contributor to that station purely for his love of jazz.
On a side note, I almost took a lesson with Ed Shaughnessy (spelling?). He was one of the sweetest men I ever spoke to. Our schedules conflicted, but we traded drummer jokes like we'd known each other for years, even though we only had one phone conversation.

Groovemeister, to put it in perspective Johnny hosted a show that was on the air for 30 years. He was a funny guy, always laughing, joking, and unfortunately smoking. Emphysema ultilmately killed him. Seeing him so often as I grew up and finding out he'd died was a little like having a distant, but fond relative pass away.
He regularly featured musicians and had Buddy Rich on the show many, many times (I must have seen him on it a dozen times) all before there were many drum vids. He was a drummer, a lifelong fan of the instrument, and made it possible for many American drummers to see one of the greats (Buddy, Louie, and many others, etc.) every couple of months. Plus, he had Ed Shaunessey as the house drummer every night.
He'll be greatly missed.

I remember seeing Roli Garcia Jr. come out and play his huge Remo kit on the TS, and I remember seeing Sheila E. play a solo on a bright pink Yamaha double bass kit.
"Uh, I did not KNOW that."
RIP Johnny.

There will NEVER be another Johnny Carson. I had the priviledge of playing behind him on a concert tour back in the mid 70's. Backstage he was as shy and aloof as everyone says. But he took the time to talk to me (Johnny was a drummer who loved drums). It was a short conversation--Johnny shared with me his love of drums and numerous drummers (especially Buddy Rich). As I look back, that is one of my very best memories. I mourn his passing and pray that God will comfort all his family and friends with "the peace that passes all understanding."

There's a very short clip of Johnny playing drums along with "Love for sale" on 60 minutes at the end of this clip:

Now that you mention that, ben, I first saw another young drummer on there also, several times; a kid [ATT] named, I believe, Jacob Arman Berbershian?...anyone rem this? Whatever became of him...
Anyway, Johnny did help jumpstart many a career, ESP comedians...who have to have one of the hardest professions in the world [then comes pro musician, next ]...
