I try to stay out of the racial issues, but wtf is this about?
Blacks overwhelmingly name Clinton as history's greatest president?
I'm stunned.
OK, if the question was who was the best president in your lifetime, I could understand Clinton being listed first by blacks.
But all-time best? That is amazing.
The sad thing is most of them probably don't even know which president freed the slaves.
I'd have to agree that unfortuantely 9 out of 10 blacks probably couldn't name more that 10 U.S. presidents. Not becuase of issues of inteligence, but because culturally they have an ingnoranace or disdain for U.S. history (not without some good reason I might add), when a group has been excluded for generations this is difficult to avoid. What I think is especially tragic though is that NOW anyone whether your black, white, brown, yellow, or purple, has opportunities in this country IF you choose to apply yourself, to become a success and live the American Dream. Regardless of social situation. If you want to achieve DON'T join a gang, and do go to school, it is that simple!!! http://www.hostboard.com/forums/

TTB, I bet if you asked that question to the same number of whites, you would get a similarly poor response. Same for your 9 out of 10 vito. I dont think Americans in general know alot about their own history.
This cant be right. If you go into alot of older black households, you will see a picture of the Black American Trinity: JFK, MLK, Jr. and Jesus. I guess they will have to replace JFK with his protege.

He acomplished alot as a general but had a reputation of trading lives for victory( but isn't that what a general must do?)

Custer died the next year and news of his death reached DC on July 4, the celebration of 100 years of America....that screwed Grant in the next years election.....but like IB said, I don't know shit about Presidents.

I'll agree with you that that is an absolute prerequisite to success. But it's certainly no guarantee of success.
And rack whoever said that Americans in general don't know nearly as much about their history as they should.
I heard the results of this poll a couple of nights ago and though I wouldn't say I was shocked I would say I was a little perplexed. But then that little grain of salt appeared when the same poll showed Dubya in the top 5.

I was going to say the same thing but I remembered that he shoots those things down on Melrose and other assorted idiot hangout locations. They only show the idiots on TV because there is no entertainment value from the smart ones who actually get them right.
Overall, every race and ethnic background has their share of idiots but it seems to be the smart ones that don't get that much credit for being smart. Find a dumbass on the street and throw him on national television! Now that makes sense.
I am not one of the ones who would Reagan or either of the Bushes at the top. I'd probably pick Jefferson because of his efforts in drafting the Constitution, but perhaps Washington or Lincoln because they were in office at such critical times.
I understand that these polls tend to favor the more recent presidents. I also understand that many (most?) Americans -- of all races -- do not know enough about our history.

Sorry Jsc,I have a much harder time figuring out why you would not be more shocked that Bush is tied with JFK. Who the hell voted for him?
I would put Washington first for his vision and colusion with the original founding fathers.
Lincoln would be up there for keeping the nation intact and his compassion towards the South at the end of the war; allowing the Confederate generals to keep their swords and the confederate soldiers to keep their horses.
I give Eisenhower high marks too.....and Johnson for his civil rights efforts.
I credit Reagan for standing up to Libya(and blowing the shit out of their navy) rebuilding America's defenses after Carter had raped them and outspending the Soviet Union to the point that they eventually imploded.
