you'll see 26-2 live from 2001 when HASS just got out of Berklee. It's sick, very fast odd meter drumming. Sounds Indian to me. Someone tell me whats going on on this track. It's Steve Hass Lonnie Plaxico and George Colligan along with Ravi Coltrane

Thats a side of Hass I haven't heard. I mean. Thats insane. I wanna say it's not musical, but that would be to my discredit. I just don't get it. It's very Eartern European sounding. Like those fast Bulgarian wedding bands. Is there a style music that HASS DOESN"T have a handle on?

Oh and P.S that's 26-2, not a jam. 26-2 is John Coltrane tune with some of the craziest harmonic changes. So the musicians are not only playing in fast odd meter, but they're dealing with harmony. I think I just crapped myself. HA!

When you think of all the kinds of music this guy plays well, it's frightening.
Studio players like Gadd, JR, Pelton, Matt Chamberlain, Aronoff could never turn around and cut this insane music. Vinnie's the only other. The same way crazy bulgarian drummers couldn't lay down a fat backbeat track.
Hass however IS a studio guy. And you can tell even in this track, because as loose as it is. It starts at the same tempo it finishes at. To me that's serious. He's a top gun. Most drummers would drag that crazy tempo.
Case in point PF! EJ Strickland a mere jazz drummer sounds great playing HASS' parts in the same tune years later in the video. However, he slows down in the first bar. If you listen to where the song is counted and how he comes in it slows down right away, it's exacly what you said. It dragged. It slowed down to the point where I figured it out! haha
its just a 9 subdivided in different ways in different sections.

I hear the basic hi-hat groove as 18/16 subdivided four groups of 4/16ths with 2/16ths at the end. Similiar to Celestial Terrestrial Commuters which if I recall was 19/16. 4/4 with 3/16ths tagged on the end.

On 26-2 the intro of the tune is in 5.
Then the head comes in then goes into 9
the solos are in 9.
The head comes in again at the end of the tune still in 9 then the tune ends

Hey Rob, are you sure that is in 9. I sometimes hear it in 17/16.
Obviously a 17/16 on steroids!!! [img]tongue.gif[/img] .
When they play the theme I hear 3 groups of 4 16th notes and then 1 group of 5.... 4+4+4+5=17, (not sure of the order) but I'll check it again.
Maybe some of the members of his forums could ask him how he count that s***t and help us solve the mistery.
The harmonic changes sound like the "Giant Steps" changes (That famous progression use 26 chords so maybe the title 26-2 is a reference) which by the way are one of the most difficult to solo over, so all my respect goes also to the other players, who are not only dealing with a crazy odd meter, but also a insane harmonic progression at a very fast tempo [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/thumbs_up.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/beer.gif[/img] [img]graemlins/beer.gif[/img]

You're right about that studio drummer thing. Steve is creative drummer with jazz mind, but he also had a studio/sideman mentality. those two combined are rare and can make for a great career. Obviously. He's at the beginning of his career and he's already had dream gigs and sessions.

well, maybe i had that coming, but in fairness, to see 5-6 threads on this guy which can be put into 1 set me off.
On the other hand, as to a battles, not trying to start anything, just pointing to facts, when i see someone talking money and what someone 'thinks' Hass makes is silly.
I'm trying to enlighten guys to others playing like Michaud and there was no interaction on that thread to say Yeah or Nay about his abilitys, yet this these 5 or so threads for Hass were growing and it set me off.
I apologize if you or someone else thinks i was out of line.

I don't know what's going on here, but I suppose my response to Randy's needless and brainless post was taken harshly. Fine, it's ok. Only you know why posted that Randy. I just know it wasn't cool. Derek if you and Steve are behind that kind of behaviour, which I believe you're not, than I may no longer be posting here. It's a great board, I never thought a moderator would put a black cloud over it.
I'll take your word for it on Michaud, Randy. I'll be looking out for recordings featuring him. Clearly some folks get a real boner when thinking about Steve Hass (not me) [img]cool.gif[/img]

Sorry Randy, had I read that, I wouldn't have posted. I guess you posted as I was writing. In any case, I like Steve M's playing. And I hear you about the several HASS posts, I think many topics are silly, but the truth is. MONEY and how to get it is one of the things up and coming musicians like to know about it. It's an aspect of music for sure. And as for 5 or 6 topics. I don't know. talk to Avi, Robstix, SDK, and all the others who post about Hass. Question is, why does it bother you? hmmm..
I DO post about other drummers. but I feel Hass is new and great and I like his playing. So that's who I talk about the most. God knows the rest of you have everything covered.

On the money subject, it's fine to talk shop, but to exaggerate what a cat makes just for the sake of making your fav drummer look out of reach is the silly part.
I was making the point of there is no way this guy makes those kind of numbers playing jazz.
I could give concrete numbers on guys but that would be very unprofessional of me to do.

Not every post can be consolidated into one. They're different topics concerning the same drummer. Hass works as much as the big guns. He's new to the scene. We want to know about him. What the big deal? If he doesn't give you a "boner" Avi, then skip over the post! Drummers are like jealous little children at times. Whether you agree or like him, he has all the great gigs, and keeps getting them. And I want in! 26-2, and those videos with Manhattan Vibes made me very happy, and I shit myself watching those. I've learned a lot via this board. Don't spoil it.

Regarding the posts and what is said, it's pretty much the rule here that you can say whatever you want as long as you're not making personal attacks to towards someone on this board. Just because it says moderator doesn't mean we can't (or won't) say what we think personally.
You have lapsed into attack mode on a number of occasions as have others; frequently when discussing Hass. (who I discovered because of you guys so thanks for that)
Say you disagree and say why. Say, Michaud sucks. (I was completely impressed with him btw) Why you need to turn that into an attack on the person stating the opinion is beyond me.

No one said Steve M sucked. He's a great player. But if you can't see that Randy started this little "disagreement" than you're blind. He came in the middle of our discussion and said Hass has nothing on Michaud. Hass has nothing to do with Michaud. There was no reason for that. By threatening to ban folks who did nothing wrong, you're only jeapordizing the boards reputation. I don't get that. Be cool. Read what happened. Randy's is in the wrong, he even aplogized to Para. End of story. Para did nothing wrong and neither did I. Randy when as far as to do it again in Steve Michaud post. Why don't you threaten to ban him! HA! He started this whole thing!

Before this is over, I'd like to say why there are quite a few Hass fans in here. I don't know if some understand.
Find me this:
A drummer in their late 20s who's a great producer and writer for television and film. A drummer who not only had great fast chops, but plays for the song regardless of style. A drummer that knows and plays in band most of the rhythms from Cuba, Argentina, Mexico, Dominican, Jamaica, Africa, Bebop, bigband, ROCK, small group modern jazz, ECM, second line, Greek odd meters, Indian odd meters, R+B, Funk, Soul, 50s rock. Give me a drummer who plays the crap out of that and can solo on all of it, and I'll give you someone who's an equal to HASS in HIS element. Which is being the ultimate all around drummer. Steve M is amazing, but he's got nothing on HASS. Hass can sub in any of Steve Ms situation and get the job on. Steve M wouldn't even get the call to sub for Steve, unless it was with Alan Holsworth or an act he can fit it into like that.
Hass is king of styles. Like the greats. He will progress to have huge success. And that's why I'm a fan. I love what he does. Not how fast he can play.
